Well if I ever become a grandmother I assure you I'll still be playing games then.
And your grandchildren will sheepishly avoid you to go brainwaving... whatever that is...

My mom is 59 and she plays WOW. My boss from the library I worked at is 63 and she bought a Wii for herself cause she thought it looked fun. No, you are never too old to get enjoyment from a video game console. Now if you are gaming rather than doing other responsibilities, then mom's got a point, but no, you are not too old for enjoying video games. They are a mainstream entertainment industry now, something that wasn't prevalent during her time. So she might be having troubles understanding that. I know people like that who still think like that. Or that cartoons are just for kids, not realizing that shows like Family Guy and adult anime is out there.

3 words "Fuck other people".

Now you may be wondering what my point is, and it's simple. Play games until you don't want to anymore, and the funny thing is that very, very few things will make you stop playing other than other people annoying you about it. This will happen to everyone, and slowly it will progress that gaming becomes less childish as more adults play it, then it won't be looked down upon until it comes to a few 80 yr olds playing the new (insertgame) on their infinity boxes or something. Same with television, radio etc. Every new form of entertainment has it's trial period, gaming has only had a longer one as it was mostly designed for kids.

Amen brother!

Also, just out of interest, what does she want you to do instead of gaming? Start getting numerous tattoos, drink until you're sick every night, go to bed with hundreds of different girls and do a stupid amount of drugs? Cos you can still fit the odd game into that schedule.
I dont no she always says things like do something constructive with your time instead of playing all these video games and i am sure many people can relate to this. But you are completely right there are people on the streets drinking their selevs stupid and causing trouble and just being a pain in the arse to society. Imagine if every kid or teenager spent their nights in playing games. No crime no trouble and hell of alot more people to play online.

I do have two tattoos though.

And with GTA, they could spend all that time inside getting drunk and having sex with hookers! Digitally!

Shes the same about anime too not to have a crack at my mother lol. I suppose parents and other adults just don't see the depth, and just jump straight to conclusions. I mean i play football and cricket on saturdays and i play in a band, so it is not like all my time is spent playing games. This sort of thing is why games like GTA4 get such bad reps because people who do not know what they are on about straight away see picture or clips of somebody beating somebody to death and automatically think its bad. Where as nobody is complaing about gears of wars violence? Its same old same old.

I am sure my mother rather me have digital clamdiya instead of the real thing.

I stumbled in here hoping to find 'what came first, the chicken or the egg.'
Your question really isn't age-old.

Eh I think that games will continue to evolve until they become an alternate reality- a better reality for people of all ages to escape to. I hope to create that reality ;) Nah I dunno. I think that there isn't any age to be 'too old for games' since the more popular mainstream games are continuing to be geared towards more mature audiences.

I thought it would have been a good title but fair enough.

True most games now that are being released are aimed at more mature audiences.

Being honest my parents were the same, until Dad got into Hogs of War on the PSX. I bought him the PC version to keep him away, but he understands why I enjoy them now.

You're never too old to play Video Games, you're never to old to play cards, you're never too old to watch movies, you're never too old to read books, you're never too old for anything. You're never too old to have fun. If you love gaming (and you're not the only one, believe me) then it doesn't matter what anyone else says. There's a reason some games are 17+, and there's a reason some games have deep storylines like Half-Life 2 for instance. That's not something a kid would enjoy as much as an adult. You don't grow out of games, you grow into games.

Everybody enjoyed that game lol
My dad only seems to like sports games to be clearly Fifa is the only game my dad has ever spent any time with and he gets bored of that.

Correct. By the way, I never meant the tattoos in a bad way, just wanted something else to add :p
I have a very good mate that was once a bigger gamer than me, but he went to drugs, the house is a fucking dump and he just isn't interested in anything. A damn shame. Games are just another hobby, harmless.

EDIT: The Rik Mayall will always be the greatest thing about Hogs of War. The greatest thing about anything ever, actually.

ya no matter how old I get I dont think that anything will kill my passion for gaming.
But can we, will we, be able to move on to the next thing in entertainment? Or will we too, be stuck in their ways of thinking eventually...I can see it now.
"James you need to stop playing with your holo-deck and realize that your generation is wasting their lives in those...machines."
"But Dad, how are games any different?"

I know it's happened to alot of my mates. One of my mates though finds drugs and gaming to be the best thing since sliced bread he loves just to chill smoke some weed and play endless hours of dragonball z budokai lol.

I met him in a pub once and spoke about it. It was interesting.

My wife's aunt believes videogames are a childish pasttime. That videogames are mindless entertainment, and beneath myself and my wife ages 26 and 24 respectively. The last game she played was Doom - she has not moved with gaming as it evolved and seen the epic narratives that gaming can present.
Any attempt to explain this to her is met with stalwart resistance and refused acceptance.

Meh.

no doubt that gaming is evolving socially and will most likely be integrated as a part of social entertainment within years. most older people don't need or want games since they haven't been raised or informed about it regularly enough to actually care. those of the previous generation that do are usually characterized as loners or outsiders, or people taught by the younger generation.

where i live there has been a steady increase for gaming as a casual activity. that being said, badmouthing of games does not reach the outskirts of this cold hell.

it's not really a problem with games or anything as such, it happened before with television and radio. people don't like what they don't know, and by old age they are usually not very inclined to experiment. chances are that by the time we're old, there's some new fad that most of our generation will have no interest in - and the cycle repeats.

I will probably be a gamer for as long as I live, but lately martial arts really has me in a rear naked choke. by that I mean I have been really getting into it, and I noticed that I am starting to cut back on gaming for the martial arts. But no though, some people just simply can't understand. Heck every time I make even a tiny mistake, it is all gaming's fault.
