Eh...most people would agree with the OP.

The problem is, they are very good at listing examples of everyone else's stupidity, but very bad at acknowledging their own.

The problems faced by society are caused by people not so different from you and me.

I'm sorry I couldn't hear your argument over the sound of your own prejudices and I really don't care to hear it again. You're free to say what you like and I'm free to say your argument is silly and entirely biased.

Okay OP, I'm really sorry about this, but it really is getting to me. No hard feelings, okay? I don't hate you, but I'm a bit of a perfectionist.

OP: It ISN'T 'stupid,' it's STUPIDITY. It's a little ironic complaining how the world is stupid if you can't get the verb of a word. ;) Look, nothing against you, and it DOES make sense when put it into context with what you said in the rant, but when you read the name of the thread from 'Hot Topics,' the name "The alarming amount of stupid in the world" sounds stupid itself. You can leave the word 'stupid' in the explanation, but just not in the name of the thread itself. Cheers! :D

There are various sorts of intelligence in the world and many people cannot fulfil the prerequisites for all of them. I consider myself culturally aware and socially intelligent but my knowledge of physics and chemistry is limited to high school. Many scholars would consider me "stupid". Similarly, you just pinpointed a particular group of people for being stupid under your terms, and your terms are being flexible for the most cynical point of view possible. It comes off as bigoted, and ignorant, but I'm not going to call you stupid. You're just clearly not thinking this through. You thinking you're better than people under set criteria though makes you fit into the same group of people you were judging from your point of view.

When you dwell on what's wrong with the world, everything looks wrong, and everything becomes support for your mindset. If it truly bothers you, you should spend more time focusing on what's right in the world, and doing your part to contribute. Never forget that nothing is perfect, and never aim to make it so, but always work toward making life better for yourself and everyone around you as much as you dare. That is your duty as much as everyone else's.

This is coming from a hardened cynic, by the way.

Warning, This is kind of a RANT. I have a lot on my mind, and decided to put it all in one topic.

I am amazed at the alarming amount of stupid in the world. examples such as: Jersey shore, PeTA's hypocrisy, WBC, People who are against 'blank' (however have no knowledge about 'blank'.), the pointlessness of so many children shows, parents who let the TV baby-set their kids, badly worded internet bills, gullible and bribe-able politicians, constant remakes of horror movies as sequels showing what hollywood gets away with and its lack of creativity, this cartoon exist, the national debt in the US, most video games are no longer hard and reward people for everything now, people constantly discriminating, degrees no long mean anything (as anyone can get one, regardless of intelligence), activist who don't understand what they are protesting, people who protest just to protest, constant repeats of history (most recent: "let's get those 'terrorist' who threaten our civilization in the middle-east", I refer you to Rome around year 1 AD.), US government apparently admiring to existence of UFOs, and people freaking out about new super-bugs when the plagues of the past were much worse (Spanish flu, black plague, etc...).

First, does any of this surprise you? Second, is there anything stupid that I'm not aware of or forgot to mention? Third, is there any more history repeating itself? Also, feel free to discuss the above issues.

EDIT: Here's more i forgot at the beginning (and i will be adding more here): Poe's law, rule 34, trolls,

as to weather or not we are stupider than before...thats a hard question, which would obviously require some kind of in-depth study
You know... id take stupidity over arrogant judgemental people, and id take stupidity over negativity.

This pretty much. In order to address everyone in a mass of people, you would have to go down to the lowest common, which effectively renders the entire group as stupid as the respective level you went down to, given that they a) adapt instantly and b) make no use of anything 'past' that level.

No we're not getting stupider, the internet just highlights all the small things that are stupid. But IQ scores are dropping, and I'm happy about that. Scientists have to lower it because be keep performing better than average from a few years back.

Of course we notice the idiots, then feel we're superior because we're better. Obviously. Just look at them and laugh because we so clearly are much better than they are. Or maybe we just think so. I can admit to falling for this once, but... You'll get over it. Humanity as a whole is getting smarter.

It pains me to see some of the stupidity going on around me... but I don't mean stupidity like you mean. I don't blame people for being what they are. People, especially in groups, get collectively worse at making good decisions for themselves. This harkens back to the whole 'mob mentality' thing folks were talking about earlier.

No, the brand of 'stupid' I hold my grudge against is not those of sub-par intellect... but those who are WILLFULLY IGNORANT of things which their intelligence could otherwise allow them to be knowledgeable.

Nothing enrages me more than a smart person refusing to use their intelligence. But the things you (the OP)have described? Those aren't stupid. They're just not appealing to your sensibilities. They're greed. They're un-educated people. They're educated people behaving inappropriately. They're "stupid comedy" for folks who want to turn their brains off once in a while.

There are a lot of things going on in what you described, but none of it is the harbinger of the Dumb Times.

It's just you seeing things that fall outside your peripheral.

These aren't things that need fixing. These are things that you simply need to remove from your focus. Keep your attention on the mediums and ideas that appeal to you, and voice your concerns in the form of logic and sound reasoning. Fight tooth and claw only when WILLFUL IGNORANCE is your target.

Do not fight those who are less intelligent, or influenced by their subscription to large-group ideals. These are the people folks like you could be leading, if you stopped trying to fix them and started speaking their language. But you can't CONDESCEND, either. You have to really put yourself down on the level and show folks of ALL intelligences that you're looking out for them.

Because if you're not... if you're just ranting about 'stupid'... then you're spinning your wheels. I should know. I did it for a long, long time before a wiser man than I taught me this lesson.

False. Individuals are plenty stupid. Working in liability claims, I am constantly astounded not only by the amount of retarded things people do that result in injuries or property damage, but the sense of entitlement that leads them to seek compensation for it.

Mob mentality is a thing, sure, but the idea that people only do stupid shit in large groups is flawed at best.

"Stupidity" is a noun, not a verb. Mote, beam, eyes, etc.

Only thing I can really say about this thread is it's absolutely stupid. You'll happily paint with a broad brush and feel superior because of it?

Congratulations, you're a dick.

You forgot that the US Congress recently declared pizza a vegetable due to the high tomato sauce content...which is bad. But the EU recently declared it illegal for manufacturers of bottled water to put a claim on their product that water can prevent dehydration. Are you F*CKING kidding me? I literally have no idea which one is worse...
Wait, wait, wait! That's why they vegetabalized pizza? But tomatoes are fruit! WHAT!?
