So I just got home after seeing the new Spiderman reboot with some friends, and what can I say? It was actually really good, good to the point where Im gonna say its better than the previous Spiderman films (Excluding 3, because they'd have to try to be that terrible).

Sure the CG isnt the best and the actor who plays Peter has lips that seem like they're trying to escape his face, but on the whole I think it was a really good film, especially the scene where

When Spideys been shot in the leg, and is struggling to make it to Oscorp. Then all the construction workers put up a line of cranes so that Spidey can get to Oscorp to stop The Lizard.

Oh also when Spidey rescues the kid from the suspended car. And Uncle Bens message. And Gwens dads death (it was actually pretty sad)

So Escapists, any other thoughts on the film? Any expectations if you havent seen it?

I haven't seen it yet, going tomorrow and I'm not exactly excited. I want to see it because I've always loved Spidey but at the same time I feel that by denerdifying Peter Parker (which is what they seem to have done from the trailers) they've taken away a lot of what made him great. I'm also worried about the whole parents arc because that was a POOR part of the comic book series. Still I'm excited about seeing The Lizard since I always liked him.

On a slightly related note: I'm really excited for the game. It looks way badass, especially free roam webslinging.

It was really damn good. Then Moviebob takes a piss on it in the same day. Lulz. I never liked the guy anyway... At least he's not that Jim guy in that overcheap tasteless suit I suppose.

Anyway back on-topic.

When Spidey was all "small knives! My only weakness!" *mock begs for him life* to this random car thief (who had really swanky tech for a bogstandard car thief but whatever)

I was nearly in tears. That was actually damn funny. Like they took Spidey's standard oneliners and took it into actual trolling territory for that one scene at least.

Not funny in the Twilight sense where someone somewhere calls someone a "marshmellow" and I and my friends fucking lost it. We were crying with laughter for a good five minutes. So bad it was funny as fuck.

Oh yeah and it's nice that Spidey is more liberal with his "secret identity" in this one. Three people told in one film? Fuck that's a new record!

I have mixed feelings on the new guy. He is certainly denerdified and you are right that's part of Parker. But he does pull of the wisecracking, joke slinging spider man really well. Better than the first spidey.

That could mostly be writing though.

seeing it in about 17 hours, i'll make sure to come back here and post my thoughts, but from what i have heard from people who have seen it, it is a lot better than the original 3, which is good!

I liked it!

It wasn't anything spectacular. I was bored during a few scenes, but overall it was worth my money and time. Peter Parker was an awesome, somewhat relatable dude. He and Uncle Ben really sold the movie for me.

Don't let any Bob's negative review stop you, especially if you wanted to see it.

Yeah, it was pretty cool. I don't think it was as good as spiderman 2, better than the other 2 (far better than the awfulness of 3). I think Toby Maguire played the awkward nerd better, but this guy played this interpretation of spiderman fine. Didn't like the design of reptile, looked too much like a goomba from that hilarious Mario film, but I'm guessing they decided it would be too awkward to lip sync a crocodile head to actual words. Looking forward to Gwen Stacy
most likely dying
in the next film.

Those are my thoughts.

Now I'm off to watch MovieBob's review to see if I can get my rage on.

Edit: Good god, did the amazing spiderman film kill moviebob's uncle, thus driving him to become a movie critic and get revenge? That was insanely angry. The crane scene was pretty daft though, I'll give him that.

I liked it. The 3D sucked and wasn't worth it. The only throw away scene was where he gets the spider.

Overall it was fun that they didn't take it too seriously.

I liked it. It wasn't groundbreaking, but I liked how they did things this time. Gwen Stacy I appreciate, and I also appreciate how they branched out to the Lizard. I would prefer the Lizard to be more of a tragic villain (like in the comics where he's terrified of transforming because it destroys his life/marriage/etc), but whatever, they only have but so much screen time. Martin Sheen was good, Sally Field was better than usual, Andrew Garfield was solid, Emma Stone was great, the action was so-so. 3.5/5 stars.

BUT DID IT PASS THE BECHDEL TEST?!? (no? I don't think so?)

I fucking loved it. And seeing posts about how terrible it is made me love it even more. I agree with you on your favorite scenes. They had to establish that the people of NY love Spidey. I also notice complaints about his web shooters and the combat. Why not use them in fights more often? They're a non-lethal, quick way of disposing criminals. People also hate on the romance. I'll admit, I would've made a nerd-rivalry between Gwen and Pete and it've eventually attracted them. Coming out as Spiderman to Gwen early in the film was unexpected, but pretty ballsy and cool. It avoided the cliched scenes of Peter making excuses so he can go out to fight crime. Showing Uncle Ben getting shot was also unexpected, and it made the scene even sadder.

More complaints: Spidey fighting cops and Peter being a skateboard punk slacker. They were pointing guns at him and he HAD to get to the tower. It was necessary. The whole slacker character and not being nerdy thing was actually more realistic. Anyone else here who had good marks high school remember just chilling at your desk drawing/doodling/procrastinating rather than paying attention? I do.

I didn't like the Lizard's "take over the world" thing, though. That's the only big complaint I have about the movie.

I had low expectations about this movie, but I really enjoyed it.

It wasn't perfect, but it was a fun ride and i believe that the cast all played their roles respectfully well. I thought Andrew was great as both a wise-cracking spiderman and an intelligent peter parker. The action scenes were very entertaining, and spiderman actually fights like spiderman in this one. The web-slinging is a blast to watch and the relationship between gwen and peter is believable and doesn't make you want to cringe.

The whole thing about his parents wasn't interesting though, but it wasn't interesting in the comic either, and the lizard could have been portrayed better as more of a good man/monster within character instead of straight up bad guy.

But overall, if you like spiderman or just enjoying movies, you should go see it.

I so badly want to hate this movie.

It has that obnoxious, smug, hipstery-looking main character, it's set in highschool, the spidey-suit looks rubbish, the film only exists to keep the license, it doesn't have Jonah; so I check IMDB, and would you look at that, it's rated 7.8 out of 10.

How dare this movie be worth watching. How dare it.

T'was alright in my opinion. I just don't really like how thy had to reboot and retcon the story just to introduce the "truth about the parents" plot thread.

And did anyone else feel that:movie spoilers.

The whole thing was (accidentally of course)peters fault? if he never brought Dr.Connors the solution for the decay rate... thingy then he never would have become the lizard and Osborn would have died he'd have preemptively knocked out 2 (Maybe 3) of his foes literally without even knowing it.

and something that bugs me (but I'll have to let it go since this is y'know a movie) about Dr.Connors transformation is: where does he get the extra mass for that arm? and why does it fall apart so easily after it wears off? unless he was swallowing bucket loads of chicken breasts during the change he should have either been really tired or thinner than before. they could have made his arm sticky looking but that doesn't really make for a very threatening looking monster now does it?

Peter acknowledges that point though when he talks to gwen in one of the later scenes

I liked the film (agree with the crane scene- got goosebumps at that part as well). Overall I think it was a good movie, not fantastic, but better than the previous ones. I never felt the film dragged on whilst I definitely did for Spiderman 3, whilst both ran over 130 minutes.

Out of the superhero movies this year, Avengers is still the best. I guess we'll have to wait till Batman in 2 weeks to decide.
