As far as Faramir is concerned... that was always my single biggest gripe with the films. I mean, at that point we have already seen Gandalf himself horrified at being offered the Ring, Saruman turned, Galadriel, one of the most powerful Elves left in Middle-earth at the time, seriously tempted, and Boromir outright falling prey to it and leading to the breakup of the Fellowship. Honestly, I think that was quite enough to drive home the point that the damn thing is dangerous and will corrupt almost anyone if given the chance.

Faramir's whole thing was precisely the fact that he was not his brother. Turning him into Boromir 2.0, in my opinion, was a serious disservice to the character, not to mention a waste of screentime.
Except the entire point of Faramir's film sequence is that he's still not his brother. If anything, I find it more compelling because book Faramir lets Frodo go far too easily. Film Faramir lets him go as well, but he's shown to be a more conflicted, flawed individual. Generally speaking, a flawed character is more interesting than a perfect one.

I can get why book purists dislike film Faramir, but like in many cases, I thought this was the case of the films improving upon a character. Whatever the pros of the books (worldbuilding is first among them), in-depth characters aren't among them.
