Well, I'm an American and today I heard literally dozens of people on XBOX live calling me fat, lazy, stupid and the likes. So, I would like to know, why exactly do you guys perceive us Americans as being like that? I'm certainly not lazy or stupid, definitely not fat and I'm a good person. So, non american escapabillibambadoes, why do you think of Americans as being like that? Also, I'm not being a troll if anyone thinks I am, I'm actually being serious, I want to know.

Hoo boy, I'm not sure where to begin, but People of WalMart [http://www.peopleofwalmart.com/] seems like a good place to start.

There's some truth in every stereotype. There are fat lazy and stupid people who live here in America. Of course not everyone is like that.

I'd say they're just trying to get a rise out of you. Just ignore them. Or mute them.

Because it seems it's always acceptable to insult those who are on the top of the heap.

Don't worry, we're slipping off rapidly. Once we become underdogs again, people won't make fun of us as much!

The first thing that came to mind when I saw this topic was that South Park episode where they play in the dodge ball tournament in China, and the Chinese commentators are making fun of American accents.

What's all this about eh? Stereotypes you say eh? What are those? ...eh?

[sub][sub]We tend to blame the Yanks for all our misfortune here but I know the vast majority of the people are good, normal people.[/sub][/sub]

Stereotypes exist because of the majority.

Don't get me wrong, we're complete idiots compared to the rest of the world. Why? Because we're only a 200+ year old country, and we don't quiet have everything sorted out yet. But, I hope, that by the Time America hits about 500 to 600 years in age, we'll be on par with the rest of the world.

My point being, every country has had it's "bump in the road", we just happen to be going through ours right now. We'll eventually get over it, or collapse.

So really, this American stereotype is only temporary. Much like the stereotype that British have bad teeth, they obviously don't anymore but they did at one point.

Stereotypes originate when a certain subset of a population with certain negative qualities in common do as much as they can to draw attention to those flaws. Women with blonde hair who decide to forego practical education and instead rely on their looks gives the stereotype that blondes are dumb. Lawyers who "lie with the truth" give the stereotype that Lawyers are dishonest. In short, 10% of any given population give the other 90% a bad name. But granted, the Americans who are stupid, fat, and lazy are very, very stupid, fat, and lazy. The biggest problem is most "stereotypical" Americans have very important, very public positions and jobs.

There's a thing called vocal minority, where a few people among alot of people represent everyone in that group thanks to the media. Americans seem like fine people(those who I've met, anyways).
Note: I'm sad to say that I'm the type of Canadian who says "Eh" sometimes. It just leaks out from time to time.

Just give them what they want...screw your team over (if it's your team saying it) by saying you need to go eat. Then start spewing some far right nonsense in a Texas accent.

You forgot to work in Canadian politeness, mounties, lumberjacks, and that thing with the sticks.

Americans do tend to be much more casually dressed compared to their European counterparts. I have a class with one guy I've nicknamed "sweatpants". :/
