Ok, I'm sitting here playing fallout 3 for the millionth time and i am still not bored. What is it about this game that keeps not only myself but many people playing and replaying?

Probably the open-ended gameplay, that while not as free as the original two, allows you to pretty much do whatever you want. Would you like to play a saint who brings life to the wasteland, or a psychopathic murderer? The game encourages both, and gives you the tools to do it. There is also the fact that Bethesda packs a lot of hidden things into their games, and when you discover them, it gives you the spark to want to play again.

Since I have the PC version, its definitely the mods that keep me playing and makes FO3 have awesome replayability. Without the mods, I would like it a lot less. Same with Oblivion.

(edit)

Besides those, I agree, the world is so open and I'm not forced on a path.

Well, the answer is probably deep seated somewhere within your psych. Only you can say why it has intrinsic value to yourself.

I couldn't possible answer unless I knew something about your past, for example, did your mother ever take you to post apocalyptic Washington as a child?

I loved just exploring the Capital Wasteland and looking for different loot.

Almost got all of the bobble heads now.

Can't wait until the Game of The Year Edition so I can play the expansions.

A shit stained world which is totaly unrealic post apocalypstic world which would no way in hell be the way it is in Washington DC? Or maybe that it's environment is a direct copy of the Mad max series...which takes place in Australia.

I actually got bored of Fallout 3 after I beat the game, all of the quests and got all bobbleheads. Oblivion however, now that game kept me entertained for many an hour!

The exploring, and explosions.
Ever see a Raider on a 4 lane highway fight off a Eyebot with a assualt rifle. They, and all the cars in a hundred foot radius, blew each other up.

The fact that there's so much in the wasteland, you can discover something you never knew existed every time you play.

Morality, it makes you play through to see how it is to see what it is like to play both the good or bad path, PHAT LEWTZ to find, people to converse and learn

Simple: When I (foolishly) accepted the explorer perk, I looked at the simply massive number of locations to explore and said HOLY SHIT. The game is simply massive. More than the other two, because in those the towns were the only places with substance.

It's not all about the combat or anything, it's about the story, the thrill of adventure, knowing that when you are scaveging through a building, that building was once a real place, with living people.

I think the hole good evil chooses that you can make and the still to come out mother ship DLC unlike other games and the crazy redneck in point lookout and new enemys from broken steel and higher leve cap who would not wont to play fallout 3 and decide to save or blow up magaton for the millionth time.

It's the feeling that my actions shape the world, that does it for me. After I defeated the Enclave, I really felt like I had saved everyone from a terrible fate, and I was now free to roam the countryside like a god, dispensing my own particular brand of violent and stealthy justice to any who might oppose me.

Seriously, with Broken Steel, Fallout 3 has perhaps the best post-game gameplay of anything I have ever played. It's still so much fun to wander, and there's still so much to do.

That is not supposed to be Washington, DC only destroyed by nukes. That is supposed to be an alternate reality DC of the future that has been nuked, then left mostly to rot for 200+ years, at the same time being a fictional world that still has to be playable.

Oh, go watch Mad Max again as well. I remember the movie and have actually played Fallout 3 they didn't really look alike to me.

Sure it is not realistic, but then would anyone really play it then? If you want complete realism go outside, and stop trolling the escapist.

I don't know. I've been playing for 2 weeks and I'm done. But then again, I don't really replay games unless they are really special experiences that I wish to treasure i.e. Portal, Half-Life episode 2, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time ect. It never compares to the first play though however.

I'm probably not going to come back to it till Mothership Zeta.
