Right so, I've sent in my applications to join the UK army as an officer, and this has been met with a fairly unanimous response.

"Don't do that, you'll die"

I know it's a possibility, but that's surely taking a very negative ground, right?? I mean, in the UK I've worked it out to be around a 0.1% death count.

What're your opinions on this?? I just think everyone is a bit overbearing on this issue,

(Also please don't post anti war speeches, it's not a hate contest, merely a question)

To my knowledge the UK is not engaged in massive military operations at the moment so you stand a strong chance of living. Go for it. Ninjad.

Don't do it, you'll die.

Wait, that's not right. Do whatever you want. Some people don't the military or the thought of war, and so they try to stop others from joining. It's up to you, though.

If you join the army, you will be putting your life on the line for your country, which could go to war at any time. If you're comfortable with that, join. If you're not, don't.

Simple, right?

Just remember that you may die for a cause you might not support.

you'd think so, but you'd be amazed. Even my Grandad who served in the war is against it now, that's pretty messed up. But thank you at the escapist for your support in my choice :)

Do it, the military makes for an honorable career. If you really don't want to die you can join the navy though.

Oh wait, I just remembered the Royal Navy is really gay. Nevermind, stick with the army.

Too bad you don't get to go to West Point though. If you did you could come visit me...

I would join the army, but I have a serious allergy with bullets. If a bullet hits me, I die.
How does one know this without contact?

Anyway, I say go for it. If you really want to, don't let anyone else tell you not to.

Whoa-whoa-whoa...

UK Officers go into dangerous territory?!?

But srsly, if you don't know where to go, the military generally builds you up for the rest of your life if you can stand the lower standards of living and lack of liberties.

Officers don't die. They send in subordinates to die for them :p

Seriously, if you want to do it, do it! I'll just say I think you have balls of steel, and I salute you for having the mentality to put yourself in the firing line for moral objectivists (also known as cowards) like me :)

It doesn't amaze me. People change with experience, and war is not an entirely pleasant experience.

Dying isn't the only risk. If they send you somewhere you'll have a 1 in 3 chance of getting PTSD.

Also, kindly wake the fuck up. You'd have to be very lucky to actually get the chance to fight for 'freedom' or 'democracy' or 'the safety of your country'. You'll most likely be sent to a country in the Middle East where you have no right to be, where they don't want you and where a combination of terrorists and stupid politicians will take away any chance you have of doing something good.

I find it frustrating to read that even after the debacle in Iraq there's still people willing to risk life, limb and mental wellbeing for a bunch of lying, thieving politicians.

I envy you. I've thought about joining the army, but who would I be dieing for? Spoiled Americans who watch American Idol? I'm not dieing for that. I'd just as soon strap a bomb to my chest and jihad the nearest Taylor Swift concert.

If I had the chance to serve a true country like Great Britain (or the United Kingom in general), I'd go for it.
