You have nothing to worry about in the Royal Army. You might get deployed to peacekeeping or Afghanistan but mostly you will have no probs. Im personnaly considering joining the Submarine Service like my Uncle but I have to finish school first.

I would join the army, but I have a serious allergy with bullets. If a bullet hits me, I die.
Now I know your weakness. And here I was thinking you're a, what's the word? C'tan? God? WEAKLING!
Actually, he is a necron tomb lord, so he is still allergic to bullets but he will be rebuilt every time he is destroyed.

If I could do that I would join the army right away.

Here's the way I see it.

I join the Army, and I have four years (In the US, I do not know the minimum term of service in the UK) in which I might get shot, exploded, etc.. Okay. I stay in the US, I live in the state that's #1 in alchohol related fatalities on the road. I could be struck by lightning, I could be caught in a tornado, I cuold be otherwise electrocuted, I could slip on spilled smoothie at work and smash my skull open, the gun I take to the range could have a freak failure and explode in my hands, my MP3 player could set my pants on fire, I could fall while skateing and break my neck or head that way.

My chances of surviving the Army aren't a hell of a lot different than my everyday life. Oh, I left out gang-related violence. Anyways, yeah. Army's dangerous, especially for Cavalry Scouts (which is what I'd go in for), and especially for non-coms, but it's REALLY not as bad as everyone says it is. Good luck by the way, hope you enjoy the time you serve.

I suppose as long as you've thought about what it will involve and the risk seems worth it to you then go ahead. Bear in mind that you won't get any say about what they want you to do even if you disagree with it.

I think you should do whatever you want.

It's your life and no one has te right to tell you what to do.

In joining the british army you are entering one of the world's most respected, disciplined and honourable military forces. You inherit a set of principles that have remained unchanged for many hundreds of years and a reputation for professionalism in war that is unrivalled by any other army.

I wish for you, the best military career possible. And in 20 years time when you're awarded the Victoria Cross, I'll be able to say "I commented on that guy's thread!"

Are they saying you in particular will die, or that you die if you join the army?

I'm against the army, but if you think it's a good career move for you, then do it. "You will die" is an exaggeration for emphasis, as "There's a chance you will die" doesn't have as much effect. But if it's a good idea for you, do it, and just ignore everyone who says you will die if you do that, because they're wrong.

Well the main question is if you want to fight the wars that the UK is involved in at the moment.

If for example you really believe that you help Iraq by being placed there as an officer then go for it.

I, for my part, wouldn't do it. I see (to choose an example) the war against Iraq as completely unjustified. There are so many more civilians dieing now than before the attack, there hasn't been a rise in welfare at all, and it just drags on and on with no end in sight.

If you join the army, you will be putting your life on the line for your country, which could go to war at any time. If you're comfortable with that, join. If you're not, don't.

Simple, right?
you'd think so, but you'd be amazed. Even my Grandad who served in the war is against it now, that's pretty messed up. But thank you at the escapist for your support in my choice :)
yeah but wasn't there conscription in WW2 and didn't like the US make all citizens do 3 years in the forces or something

As long as you become an officer, I'm sure you'll be alright.
I'd suggest using this opportunity to study at the university at the military's expense.

If you want to do it then do it. No one can stop you, its your decision after all. Besides, joining the military is a very honorable choice.

people take all the army stuff out of proportion, sure it's dangerous but honestly you have a very high survival rating, i mean one of my grandfathers was in the airforce in ww2 and he got the job of pushing the paratroopers out the plane, the other grandfather was a marine in Korea and he did get shot but the worst injury he got was a missing finger and that was a result of a snow blower, and my dad was a account for the army and did some weapons test. what im trying to say is the job is dangerous but i doubt you will die, im mean most of my family has been in the u.s army and there all okay, i even plan to join once im done with high school.

Well, British army get some of the best training in the world. Isn't it about 5 years before you see real action (not including TA..)? Its good money and you'll get a tan.

You'll be losing a lot of home comforts for sure, personally parents from a distance is an advantage for me.

Reading all the news of people dying in the 'stan British soldiers mostly get killed by booby traps and suicide bombings and not shootings, so its pot luck whether you live or die but the odds are on your side.

That's actually pretty much standard operating procedure there.

Whatever floats your boat, I guess.

Someone has to be willing to die for their country, after all.
In America, we call them minorities. They are shunned.
Seconded.

Right so, I've sent in my applications to join the UK army as an officer, and this has been met with a fairly unanimous response.

"Don't do that, you'll die"

I know it's a possibility, but that's surely taking a very negative ground, right?? I mean, in the UK I've worked it out to be around a 0.1% death count.

What're your opinions on this?? I just think everyone is a bit overbearing on this issue,

(Also please don't post anti war speeches, it's not a hate contest, merely a question)
Of course dying is a possibility, but that can happen from a car accident, a roof tile falling on your head and practically anything else.

Sure the odds may be less on the last example but it still adds to the point: We can die at any time, so we shouldn't miss out on something we want to do because it might happen sooner.

To be honest I have considered joining the Military, my only issue is that I don't support the War in Iraq and that is the most likely place to be deployed.

How does one know this without contact?
This made me laugh. Thank you.

I don't see why you need to even ask this. Do you see yourself as someone who could keep together under fire? Would you be able to think logically, about entering a building that may be rigged with traps or have enemies located within, waiting for you? Of course there's the chance you can die, as there is with walking down the street to a shop or crossing a road. Granted it's an increased chance, but do you honestly believe they'd send you into a battle with no training, no support, or other experienced fighters along side you?
The people who tell you "You could die", are not you, and don't seem to bother looking at the whole picture. You go in, recieve training, get payed, earn other bonuses, or skills which become relivent when (If) you quit as a civy.

My opinion is I'd just think about it. Do you think you can handle; the training, firing a weapon, killing someone who is shooting at you or your allies and (if you choose to stay in) leading other soldiers? If so, then go go for it. There's always non-combat roles if you can't do that.

Just remember that you may die for a cause you might not support.
Wise words. Make sure that you agree with what your country's policy is. You represent it once you join the army.
