Pixie sat in silence, all but her good eye hidden behind her knees as Aesop struggled to make sense of her tale. She watched him in her periphery.

"Pixie... Mere..."

Digging up such an old memory was painful and... shameful, but Pixie couldn't just spill her guts and leave the poor guy to sort through the bile alone. She bit down on her bottom lip hard before letting one of her knees fall to her side. Furrowing her brow, she grabbed hold of Aesop's hand and laid it down on her bare thigh. She squeezed it tight and looked him in the eye, "Please, don' pity me. I do enough of that as it is." She smiled, sadly. "I've made a lot of mistakes in my life. Even now... comin' here... I won' pretend that part of the reason I'm here is 'cause I've been promised Dio's head. Or that I jus'... had to get away." Her gaze downcast, she shook her head in frustration. "I don' know what's gotten into me. Sure, I used ta' run away when the goin' got tough every now an' then, but for a long while there I was tough as nails. I'd get pissed all the time, yeah, but not so much so that it would cloud my judgement."

She couldn't help but laugh. She sounded... weak, "I guess you can only take so much punishment before the bruises start ta' show. I feel like... I'm at the end of a rope. Like there ain't nowhere fer me to go but further down. Deeper into the abyss." She frowned. "Part of me wants it. Part of me wants it all to end, not jus' 'cause I think y'all would be better off without me, but because of the pain. It's jus'... God, fuck... I'm sorry," She chuckled. "Listen to me. I sound so fuckin' pathetic. I'm the most feared ***** in all the land? Yeah right. I shouldn' be feared, I'm jus' a lil' pussy."

She rolled her eye and laughed, "Fuck, I'm startin' ta' sound like you now, buddy." She met his gaze once more. "Tell you what: let's make a deal. I'm gonna try ta' stop bein' so self-loathin' an' you 'ave ta' do the same. Okay?" She searched his eyes for a moment before continuing. "Let's use this time we 'ave before the raid ta' jus'... have fun. Relax. Reflect. All that kinda bullshit." A legitimate grin appeared on her face. "I can teach you tai chi!"

Pixie wanted so desperately to make it end. To squelch the voice in the back of her head telling her how utterly useless she was. How she was a ruthless killer. A poor leader. A bipolar lunatic. A cold-hearted *****.

A bad mother.

All she could think to do now was to reach out to someone like her. If they could work past their own shit, surely she could.

She had had the same hope with Amy, as well.

Pixie put all that in the back of her mind, however. No, she wouldn't wallow away like this. All she needed was for this lost soul to return her smile. To take her hand so that they could both work through their suffering together.

She couldn't ask that of Sprout or Lilith. Nor Jake for that matter. She wanted to protect them. She couldn't have her issues bring them down as well. And Bennie... she'd hurt him so much already.

But, Aesop?

He was right down there in the pit with her. Perhaps together they'd be able to claw their way out.

I won' be givin' up on yer ass anytime soon, you fruitcake.

The smile she offered him was as sincere as he'd ever been given.

"Last I heard, The Maiden was retaken by her original crew in Yuteni. I'm guessing that's where they would head. Were they going to take you there too?"

Elizabeth shrugged, "I believe that was the plan, but honestly, I am not so sure. I was Pixie's prisoner beforehand because she couldn't risk telling me the truth of my situation. She reconsidered her position later, once I was already in Feroxi, and chose to let me in on the truth. If I had gone to Yuteni with them, I am sure she would have insisted I remain with them for my own safety but I don't know if I'd have followed along." She stared absentmindedly at the wine glass in her hand. "I'm... I'm not sure where I need to go or... what I need to do. I know there's something I need to do. Someway I can use my influence for good. There has to be."

She was clearly disheartened. Perhaps the alcohol was working its magic; slowly tearing away the wall she had erected between them, "My elder sister... though I may not have really known her..." She looked up at Asad. "I've been told she was a true woman of the people. A legitimate altruist. The rest of my family? Opportunists and cowards. All of them. I don't want to be like that. I want to be... better than my sister, even. I want to do what she couldn't..." Her eyes wandered down to her glass once more. "Whatever that may have been..."

"Whatever that may have been..."

"There was a pretty large age gap between you two, it's understandable that you don't really know much about her." Asad smiled as he topped up the young woman's glass, before tending to his own. Asad did a little digging, nothing he think would garner any attention. The official story was that Margaret Maribel was murdered by an unknown assailant, along with her infant son.

Asad forrowed his brow as he thought on the Cook's words.

"Don't let her share the fate of her sister. Don't let that monster devour her."

There was obviously more to the incident than had been released to the public, it didn't take a genius to figure out Elizabeth had been privy to something. Whether it was true or not, that was a different matter entirely. He would need to hear what Elizabeth had been told before he made any calls on it's legitimacy.

Shifting his eyes slightly, he glanced at the neighbouring tables. Last think he wanted was to appear like he was digging too deeply. Taking a sip from his glass, Asad looked at the girl. She had visibly relaxed, her expression was a lot softer and her posture less stiff. He didn't doubt she'd be the type to spill her guts after a few drink, after all, she couldn't keep her mouth shut when she was sober.

"Have you heard anything from your family? Any letters?"

Aesop felt strange as she placed his hand on her thigh. Nothing at all sexual, he worshipped Pixie. He loved Pixie, and feeling so close to her after she had told him so much... and feeling so similar? Everything she was explaining echoed in his mind, which for once remained silent. No thoughts, no doubts, no ghosts or imaginary murderers. Her pity was like his, her anger, her wants, need for it to just end. Yet, he wondered if she shared his fear of the-

"Fuck, I'm startin' ta' sound like you now, buddy."

Aesop burst out laughing as she said this, she wasn't wrong.

"Tell you what: let's make a deal. I'm gonna try ta' stop bein' so self-loathin' an' you 'ave ta' do the same. Okay Let's use this time we 'ave before the raid ta' jus'... have fun. Relax. Reflect. All that kinda bullshit." She grinned. Actually grinned. "I can teach you tai chi!"

"Hell yeah." He replied. "But first, you're getting a hug." This one moment he wasn't scared to overstep his boundaries with Pixie like he had this whole year with her. He reached in and embraced his captain. "No homo." He said as he hugged her whether she wanted it or not. After the hug he leant back on the armrest of the chair, pulling out the baggy Ruffles had given him. She said she didn't mind but he still worried if he should or shouldn't light up.

"Shit, you know its been a year this week since I joined? Mother fuckers better be throwing me a birthday bash when we get back." He knew he might not make it back. If it was for Pixie, he wasn't afraid of death, and he would die a thousand times over if it meant pulling her out of the fire. Still, that didn't mean he had to. Maybe he would return, maybe he could go back to the maiden with Pixie and Cameron, and if that other one needed to come Aesop wouldn't question Pixie. Maybe he could go home to the maiden.

Maybe he could go home to Yuteni even.

"It's- mwehhh..." Gale trailed off as she tripped over her own bed sheets and the one ankle length skirt she had left. It was a deep purple one, natch. Anyway she regained her posture and recovered quick enough, certain that the empty room knew she'd meant to do that.

"I got it." She went about the little trick you had to do on the door and opened it wide. "Welcome to my abode." She ushered in the collected guests. She and Allie had turned out to be popular. "Aw you got Crunk's Cantankerous Reserve?" Gale caught her breath, sweeping the bottle out of Lilith's hand. "I thought I dreamed this!" SCORE!

"Anyway... yeah, uh, find yourself a spot. Sorry we don't have much space but we got pillows and stuff for people." Gale took Martin from his resting place and gently nestled him into the corner of her bunk. "So!" She clapped her hands and rubbed them together eagerly. "What's to be the first game of the evening? Guesty's choice."

"But first, you're getting a hug."

Pixie cocked an eyebrow and chuckled as Aesop pulled her in for a hug. He'd never really been physical with her before, save for a few handshakes and shoulder pats. She wasn't sure why that was, really.

"No homo."

"Don' know why yer actin' like huggin' me is weird," She chirped. "You know 'ow touchy-feely I am!" She gave him a firm squeeze before he sat back down.

When she saw him pull out the weed, Pixie reached behind the couch once more to retrieve the whiskey she'd hidden from him. She took a swig while he spoke.

"Shit, you know its been a year this week since I joined? Mother fuckers better be throwing me a birthday bash when we get back."

"Fuck, 'as it really been a year already?!" Pixie looked distressed. "I can' believe it. Hell yeah, we gotta celebrate! No point in waitin' until we get back, though. Let's get this party started now! Light up, *****!" She hopped to her feet and started for the door. "I'm gonna mix myself some hardcore shit. Let's get fucked up tonight!" She cooed, joyfully.

"Have you heard anything from your family? Any letters?"

Elizabeth pursed her lips, "Yes and no. I was given secondhand information. It seems Lord Basilio is hesitant to let me speak to them directly while I am still 'recovering from my kidnapping'." The young noble took a large sip of her wine. "Due to instability in Boomhower my family will not be attending the engagement celebration at the end of the week. Though, I have no doubt Lord Basilio had something to do with their inability to visit." She sighed. "They're sending me an engagement gift and have promised to attend the wedding next month. I am sure your Lord hopes I will have been converted by then. The last thing he wants is for my family to grow suspicious."

After finishing her second drink, she placed it down on the table and laughed bitterly, "Not like they're smart enough to realize anything is amiss, anyway. My parents were all too eager to marry me off to begin with." She slouched back in her seat and looked at her knees. "We're nothing but chess pieces to the leaders of this world. I may be of noble blood, but I have no real control over my destiny. I marry who I am told to marry. I... fuck whoever I am supposed to fuck." She clenched her jaw. "Not really all that luxurious if you think about it."

"You are a vision of beauty, senorita."

"A'reet, calm your jets stud." Lilith chuckled as her Spanish doctor came to her rescue. The woman was used to being hit on by younger boys. Well. Boy. This one was a lot more verbose than her Sprout, but no less cringe worthy.

As Gale opened the door to the, Lilith winked at the girl. "S'up kiddo." She walked in, raising an eyebrow as the girl snatched the bottle from her hand.

"Aw you got Crunk's Cantankerous Reserve? I thought I dreamed this! SCORE!"

"Err, yeah, picked it out especially." The woman rubbed the back of her neck as she slumped in a pile of pillows. "Swanky digs you kids got here." Lilith smiled as she crossed her legs. Taking one last drag of her cigarette, she removed the stub from her lips, laughing nervously as she failed to locate an ashtray.

Brushing by Maria and Ruffles, Allie entered her room. "We dinnae have this many pillows, where'd you get this many pillows from?" The red headed girl narrowed her eyes as she looked at Gale. "This dinnae a've anythin' to do with misappropriation now, did it?" Pulling open a draw, Allie pulled out a small metal cup, handing it to Lilith. "I'd appreciate it if you didna smoke in 'ere."

"Yeah, sorry, my bad." Lilith chuckled as she stubbed out the cigarette in the cup. "Probably been smoking too many of these thing lately anyway." She muttered.

=============

"Not really all that luxurious if you think about it."

If there's one thing Asad never envied of the nobility, it was their attitudes towards marriage. Forced to marry someone you may have only met a handful of times if you were lucky, didn't strike him as particularly appealing. Basilio was old enough to be this girl's father.

"Can't say I envy your position, my Lady." The man smiled sadly. Asad suddenly felt grateful for his own parents.

'I really should get around to visiting them now I'm in Feroxi for the long term.'

Forcing your own flesh and blood into something to elevate your position, Asad felt sorry for the girl, she didn't ask for this, she didn't ask for any of it, she even tried to escape her situation, and here he was, keeping an eye on her. Clenching his jaw, Asad gulped a mouthful of wine.

"If there's anything I can do to help you in that regard, other than the, well... Obvious." The man's face softened. "I'll do what I can."

"Aw you got Crunk's Cantankerous Reserve? I thought I dreamed this! SCORE!"

Whiskey heard this as she walked in and laughed. "Oh Jesus," she said. "I think Eddie used to used that to burnish the plate on his hand. That shit's good for melting teeth and cutting through tarnish." She sat down next to Lilith and set her bottle on the floor. "McKinnon's Reserve. You jellin'?"

Setting himself down next to Whiskey, Ruffles said, "damn, you sure you're gonna fit everyone in this room?"

"You're no dashing Hispanic and you never will be."

"Then I shall settle for simply being dashing." Astor grinned in response to the killjoy. Not that he hated the older woman for it, though. In fact, the boy was more than happy to trade verbal blows just to prevent his own quick tongue and rapier wit from getting out of practice. However, the woman just snorted and folded her arms.

"A'reet, calm your jets stud."

Regardless, now was the time to unleash one of Astor's (not-so) secret weapons: the killer angelic smile! With this smile, he calmly walked past Maria and sat down next to Lilith and said, "Ah, but I am but a summer breeze at the moment. Nevertheless, now we shall see how lucky the infamous 'Casino' is! I, for one, will be keeping an eye on you."

"As will I." Maria interrupted, sighing as she sat down next to Ruffles.

The kid just wouldn't stop, would he? The fact that fitting everyone into the room would work a lot like human Tetris wouldn't help matters either. However, Lilith was a big girl - she could probably handle the newbie by herself without needing the help of the friendly Iron Maiden doctor. Hell, Lilith had fended off Sprout for years. Nothing to worry about.

Half an hour and roughly two cups of coffee later, Viola was done with her story.

"Wow. Never would have thought it was possible to take on a dozen or so guys single handed. Must say I'm impressed Viola, don't think I could pull off something like that; then again, I haven't exactly killed anyone before." Kurtis then took both of their coffee cups and headed towards the sink to deposit them.

"I'll be honest Kurt, it came as somewhat of a shock to my system the first time I killed someone, then again, it was either that or he'd kill the woman he had hostage; and I couldn't see a way to deal with him non-lethally, so I didn't have much of a choice. Say, is it usually this quiet at the storefront?"

"It can be at this time of the day."

"Placed ever gotten robbed?"

"We had a close call a couple months back. Group of about four guys dressed in clown masks wearing two piece suits came in looking to grab a couple of cases of assault rifles. Fortunately, your mom was on hand at the time to hold them off long enough that the cops came in and arrested them."

"Impressive, didn't think mom was capable. Then again, she can be quite intimidating when the mood takes her; guess I take after her in that respect. Anyway, I best be off, otherwise I'll still be here when the store shuts. It was nice seeing you again Kurtis." The two then gave each other a hug.

"You should drop by the house sometime later, and say hello. Mom would probably like it."

"I'll uh certainly think about Viola. It was nice seeing you to, take care now."

"Will do. Oh, one more thing, wouldn't mind if I have a box of these Colt .45 rounds? After an incident a roughly a week ago, a little light on the things."

"Sure, I'll take that story you told as payment."

"Cheers, well, be seeing you. Nice meeting you as well Miss Marcy." Viola said with a tip of her hat before leaving the store. Next stop, the Wolf's Creek City Center Market.

"Let's get fucked up tonight!"

"YES! Been needing someone to say that! Every time I say that people give me sideways looks." Aesop slumped and pretended to cry as he spoke before laying the weed on the table. He paused for a while before continuing once more.

"Fuck... I just realised Ruffles always rolls for me. God dammit. Can't be that hard." He said as he looked hopelessly at the bag and the skins he produced.

"If there's anything I can do to help you in that regard, other than the, well... Obvious. I'll do what I can."

Elizabeth shrugged, a sad smile on her face, "Well, the obvious would be my first choice." She held her half-full wine glass between her fingers and began swirling it around. "Honestly, I don't know what you can really offer me other than an ear." She sighed before meeting his gaze. "I've seen a lot of bad people in a very short period of time. I like to think I've gotten a decent grasp of distinguishing between the sincere and the opportunists at this point. When I look at you... I don't see a bad person."

She allowed herself a small, bitter chuckle, "But who am I to say? I don't know you. For all I know, you were assigned to guard me because you're an expert manipulator. Maybe you're the most rotten of the bunch!" She looked back down at the glass and frowned. "I don't want to believe that."

When she looked at Asad again, there was a distinct sadness behind her eyes, "I can't trust anyone. Do you know what that's like?"

***********************************************************************************************************************************************************

"Fuck... I just realised Ruffles always rolls for me. God dammit. Can't be that hard."

Pixie laughed out loud from the other room as she half-filled two glasses with beer, "I'm sure yer stupid ass can figure it out!" It took her two trips to the backroom to deliver all the necessary items for her mixed drinks. Once everything had been assembled, she sat at the edge of the sofa and placed two shot-glasses filled with cream and whiskey in front of the beer. She peered over at Aesop who was struggling to roll his joint and grinned. "Chill fer a sec, ya' gotta see me fuck my own brains out."

Hunched over the table, she took a moment to prepare herself before flying into action. She dropped the first shot-glass into one of the glasses and chugged it. Without taking a single moment to catch her breath, she repeated the process with the second shot-glass. Once the second drink was downed, she reeled back and laughed, "Whoooo, FUCK! My head's fuckin' spinnin'!" Closing her eye, she slouched back onto the sofa. "You better catch up, Aesop or I'm gonna be long gone before you even light up!" She chuckled.

"You better catch up, Aesop or I'm gonna be long gone before you even light up!"

"Fuck you its hard!" Aesop held the skins and baggy up in his hands, whimpering as he stared back and forth at them. "WHY CAN'T I MAKE YOU???!!"

'Drinking is so much easier.'

Aesop eventually managed to roll up a passable joint, for a teenage noble wondering if his parents would catch him. For a 24 year old who had taste tested several of Ruffles various batches, it was pathetic. At the very least, it was long and thick, even if it looked like it could fall apart at any point. Struggling to hold it together with one hand he lit it up.

For a moment he felt nothing. Then he literally felt nothing, not even the couch beneath him. "Shine on you crazy diamond Ruffles." He grinned stupidly as he slumped in his chair.

Amy had cleaned herself up a bit by the time she and Sprout reached Allie and Gales room. She was still considerably drunk, but any of the bitter, forlorn look that had been written all over her after Pixie's departure was now firmly trapped on the inside. Her hair was back to its usual shine, cascading down over her shoulders, and she wore a loose, tie-dye blue and white top that hung off one shoulder, along with a pair of slim navy jeans. She hadn't gone overboard with any make-up (this wasn't some kind of high-society gathering). Just the basics, applied sparingly, along with three small flecks of turquoise that angled upwards from the corners of her eyes, with her perfume now (mostly) masking the smell of alcohol.

She was still leading Sprout by the hand when they came to the room.

"Oh, well, this is cosy." she giggled, looking at everyone already scrunched up together. Crossing the threshold, she tiptoed, with unexpected balance, over several pairs of legs, before finding a spot on the other side of Jesse to Lilith, pulling Sprout down to sit on the other side of her.

Sprout absentmindedly allowed Amy to lead him into the room while his eyes found themselves fixated on Jesse. There he was, acting smooth and confident... and sitting next to Lilith! LILITH!

The daggers he stared into the boy as he sat down were razor sharp.

The nerve of this fucker!

He couldn't help it. He had to say something. Relaxing his jaw and his unclenching his fists, Sprout forced a grin, "What do ya' think yer doin' sittin' next ta' my girl, Jesse? I reckon she's too much woman fer a lil' queer like you."

Ruffles, who had been in the middle of knocking back some of Whiskey's whiskey, choked from laughing. With the help of Whiskey pounding him on the back, he said, "subtle, Sprout. Maria better spray some salve on that burn."

Maria muttered in reply, "Nah, let it scar him."

Ignoring the others, Astor played it cool, smirk ever present. It was good to see that his efforts were bearing fruit. The boy leaned forward towards the other and slightly frowned as if Sprout had committed a major faux pas.

"Your girl? My, my, a woman belongs to no one but herself." Astor replied while wagging his finger. Then, with the same hand, he brushed his hair back, "I simply happened to find a spare seat here, my apologies. It is quite a shame that there's no room to move."

"That's where yer wrong new blood. You ain't been around long enough ta' know, but me an' Lily? We're two sides'a the same counterfeit coin. She's mine," He smiled and looked to Lilith. "An' I'm hers. You fuck with one of us, you fuck with both of us so don' you get none of yer funny ideas!" He scoffed. "Not like she'd be interested in a pansy like you, anyway."

"What ideas? I am just sitting here." Astor grinned oh-so-innocently.

"How about the two of you both agree to keep your eyes on the game?" Amy interjected, putting her arms round both the both of them. "If you don't, you might both be losing your pants tonight, and getting nothing in return."

They were pressed closely together, Amy's thighs squeezed in between Axel and Jesse's. When Axel had looked away, Amy moved her right leg, ever so slightly, so that it brushed against Jesse's. Getting his attention, she met his eyes only for a second, and tried to convey a lot in her look.

'You've got to play it smarter that that. Follow my lead.'

Sprout laughed, "Yeah, well, I reckon I'd be willin' ta' lose more'n my pants if I get to see a few pairs of titties!" He grinned, shamelessly before a look of bewilderment suddenly shone on his face. "Wait, does that mean we're playin' strip poker?! Please God, say yes!"

His dreams were finally coming true. The Iron Maiden had never had enough women before for Sprout to desire such a thing. But now?

All 'dem titties...

"Maybe we start with just the regular kinda poker for a little?" Gale let out with a sigh, her eyes glancing back and forth between the two drama fiends having it out in front of her. "For the sake of us nervous newbloods."
'And the kiddie in our midst.'

Some intimacy and an ally? Was there an alignment of the planets tonight or something. 'Jesse' gave Amy his special smirk and a peck on the cheek, "Thank you madame, you are quite right."

Afterwards, he pulled himself away - as saddening as that was - and wrapped an arm around Amy. With a snap his fingers Astor exclaimed, "Yes! Though, is it allowed to bet my shirt? Unfortunately, I seem to be without carbon tonight."

Maria turned to Ruffles, "Care to pass that stuff 'round to me?"

Twice the horndogs, twice the cringing.

"Depends if Whiskey'll fill me up," Ruffles replied.

"Yeah, sure," said Whiskey, refilling Ruffles' tin cup. "Just call me your wingwoman."

"Gee, setting up us already, Miss Wingwoman?" Maria chuckled.

"Ah, y'know," said Whiskey with a wink. "I'm always up for getting a hot girl drunk."

"There's kids around, y'know." Maria mock-hissed.

"Ahem." Amy exaggerated, holding out her own cup.

Whiskey shrugged as she splashed a measure of scotch into Amy's cup. "I'm sure they'll get drunk too."

As the two boys measured dicks, Lilith crossed her arms over her chest as she sunk into the bed of pillows. It was all quite cosy, despite the ruckus.

"Pour me one while you're at it." Lilith muttered, gently nudging Whiskey with her knee.

She'd need to be liquored up to survive the night, she reckoned.

Allie slumped down next to Gale. "Fookin' 'ell'" She whispered to her friend. "Talk aboot two dogs takin' a bite outta each other." She nodded at Jesse and Sprout.

"One for everyone!" Astor shouted as he held out his own cup.

"Yeah, hopefully, they'll get drunk enough to fall asleep." Maria replied.

"Jesus, everyone's taking a bit outta me," said Whiskey, finding another cup and filling it for Lilith, and ignoring Jesse. "Still, I can't blame ya for avoiding the cantankerous for as long as ya can."

"These guys don't do build up huh?" Gale whispered back, taking a sip of her bottle - o - crunk and casually waving it at her by way of an offer. "Good thing I didn't use my good cards."

Astor pouted for a moment and lent back, bringing Amy down with him and turning to Lilith.

"I wonder when we're actually going to start..." He muttered, "It is quite rude to keep the ladies waiting, hmm?"

Amy knocked back her drink. it seared even worse than the rum, but she endured it with dignity, her lips not so much as pursing. In a seemingly absent-minded gesture, she wound some of Jesse's hair around her finger.

"So, what'll it be?" She announced. "Poker... Blackjack... Spin the bottle?"

She giggled.

As the two kids next to her started fondling each other, an unamused frown pouted the woman's lips. Tossing the whiskey back, Lilith didn't even savour it before swallowing. "More." She muttered, holding out her cup. "I don't care what." Hey eyes meeting Sprout's, she rolled her eyes as she subtly nodded at Jesse.

'Dis *****.'

Sprout watched the two next to him, utterly perplexed. Then he noticed Lilith. He didn't really respond to her disgust. He just looked... drained. Looking towards the others, he nodded, "Yeah, give me whatever Lily's havin'."

Looking down at his feet, he couldn't help but watch them in his periphery. He clenched his jaw.

Isn't she still with Ma'?

"Whatever you waaaaant." Astor chuckled as he ran his hand through Amy's hair. Fuck the others, this was too good!

Maria tapped the floor, "So, are we playing some games or are we watching kiddies bump uglies?"

After a sentence like that, she had to knock one back.

"Geez. somebody needs to loosen their straps." Amy teased. Nevertheless, she sat back up and gently shrugged away from Jesse. He'd had a small taste, no need to make it too easy. Sitting back up split the line of sight between Sprout and Lilith, and she smiled confidently at the boy on her other side, rubbing shoulders with him slightly.

Sprout forced a smile at Amy and turned away from her to retrieve his drink. He knocked it back without missing a beat and poured another. Looking at no one in particular, he cleared his throat, "So we playin' spomethin' or what?" There was a notable absence of enthusiasm in his tone.

"Fuck it," said Ruffles. "Hands up for poker." Drinking from his cup, he thrust it in the air.

"Sure." Sprout said simply.

"Works for me." Amy chirped.

Maria's hand went up as well.

Astor sat back up with a wave of his hands shouted, "Of course!"

"Guess that's most everyone, then," said Ruffles. He waved a hand at Gale. "I hear you're the crazy cards lady. You deal."

As the others sorted out getting the game started, Amy leaned closer to Sprout, a concerned look on her face.

"What's up?" she whispered, only loud enough for the two of them to hear, even in the confined space. "Did you not want to come down here?"

Sprout forced himself to look at her after taking another shot. He smirked, lazily, "No, yeah I wanted ta' come down here. I-I'm fine." He looked away from her. "Peachy."

"Poker it is then!" Gale kinda cheered, setting about dealing the cards with a veteran's ease. Was it usual for the maiden guys to kick off this easy? Not that she was one to begrudge somebody a good time but she liked to have a bit of forewarning when she was wandering into an orgy.

Whatever, she guessed, laying the last of the cards out and checking out her hand. It was... meh.

Maria frowned, "Hey, you're not messing with are cards are ya?"

Her hand was a big pile of nothing.

Amy stared at him briefly for a moment. The smile wouldn't have fooled anyone, let alone her. Was it working, or was Sprout bummed out about something else?

"Oh, okay." she said, turning away. However, she take his hand where nobody else could see, and give it a comforting little squeeze, before gathering her two cards and peeking under the corners.

"How dare you, madam. When I mess with your cards it'll be way flashier." Gale gasped in mock offence.

Astor, oblivious to everything that didn't involve himself, looked at his hand and tried to suppress a grin.

"Can't trust you types." Maria replied, narrowing her eyes. Though, she couldn't keep up the act for long and laughed.

Ruffles checked his hand. Absolutely nothing. He did, however, let a shit eating grin flit briefly across his face.

Whiskey looked at hers. She kept her face stone blank.

Allie furrowed her brow as she looked at her hand. Shifting her eyes, her tongue touched the corner of her mouth. "Eh, this would probably be a great time to say I've never played poker before."

Lilith downed another drink, grunting slightly as she looked at her cards. Well at least something was back to normal.

Sprout ignored Amy's gesture and attended to his cards. He grunted in amusement and spoke to the group at large, "Not sayin' this 'as anythin' ta' do with what I was dealt, but here's a lil' trivia question fer y'all." He looked to Lilith and grinned. "Lily ain't allowed ta' answer though. Anyway, here it is: what's the difference between the King of Hearts an' all the other kings?"

"Erm... all the others have, beards?" Amy guessed.

"Uh, the King just has to guard his chest?" Ruffles suggested.

He put down a couple of chips as the blind. Whiskey matched him.

Maria was stumped, "He only has one sword?"

'Jesse' had an idea but it was probably the wrong one, knowing Sprout's poor pedigree. Instead, he just shrugged and said, "Endless guessing bores me, tell us your little piece of trivia already."

Both called Whiskey's bet.

Amy raised.

"I hate riddles" Allie muttered, showing Gale her cards. "Anythin' good?"

Lilith smiled at the boy, as she matched the bet.

Sprout sighed and met matched the current bet, "Y'all disappoint me. It's the fuckin' mustache! He's the only one without a mouth mirken!" He chuckled.

Ruffles matched Amy's bet, as did Whiskey.

Amy raised her hand in mock triumph.

"I was closest. What do I win?"

Maria blinked, "Huh, Sprout, you're right for once."

"Probably 'the best night of your life'." Astor dryly remarked, turning his head towards Amy.

"Eeh... workable." Gale muttered leaning over Allie's shoulder from her perch on the bed. "I fold she said. "May as well take the chance and get you some learning in."

Amy raised her eyebrow, slowly turning her head in Jesse's direction.

"That... is a subject you haven't even started lessons for!" she said, indignant. Nevertheless, she stole a wink at him.

Sprout laughed at Maria's clear disregard for card confidentiality before turning his attention towards Amy and Jesse, "Get a room you two." He muttered, bitterly. Looking down at his cards, he shrugged. "Fuck it, I fold." A simple pair was not going to win this one.

"I'm a quick learner." Astor replied, ignoring Sprout. Then, ever so calmy, he added, "I raise."

Maria slammed her cards down in mock-defeat, "I fold."

Ruffles folded. Whiskey matched.

Allie shrugged her shoulders. "I dinnae ken what I 'ave, so I'll just fold." She placed her cards down. Grinning, she nudge Gale with her shoulder. "This is excitin'." She giggled quietly. She had never been to a party before.

Lilith glanced over at Maria, a small smile curling her lips. "Guess it's Liz, then." Pushing her chips, she went all in.

Maria sighed, "Now I really miss her and her anti-Lilith properties."

Going up against 'Casino'? Why the hell not? The worst that could happen was losing but Astor would be more than happy to be a graceful loser, especially since some of the hard-to-crack ladies seemed to like that sort of thing.

"I've always wanted to do this at least once." The boy said as he matched Lilith's raise.

Ruffles gave a mock sigh. "God dammit, Maria. I thought you were useful for a second there!"

"I am!" The doctor mock-pouted, throwing her hands in the air, "I'unno, knowing medicine stuff is pretty useful maybe?"

Lilith placed her cards face down on the table, smiling weakly as she put her hands behind her head as she lay back on the pillows. "Flip 'em whenever you're ready to lose, pretty boy."

"Nothing wrong with losing to a lovely lady like yourself, Miss Valentine." Astor remarked while he revealed his three of a kind, which was somewhat weak against Lilith's flush. He then gave a clap.

"First round to Lil, then," said Whiskey, putting down her cards and pushing her chips forward.

"Gonna be sayin' that a lot, I reckon," Sprout chuckled. "Probably should'a played a drinkin' game instead."

"I vote we do that." Lilith chuckled.

"Las' one standing?" Allie looked around suspiciously as she drank from a bottle of soda. "I'mma stay soberer than all of you for no particular reason."

"If you wish it, my lady, but first..." Astor said, whipping off his shirt in the most dramatic fashion possible, expertly folding it and handing it to Lilith, "I believe this is yours. You have won it fair and square."

"Yeah sure. Better get your livers ready!" Maria chuckled, hopefully there wouldn't be too many drunken shenanigans...

Lilith grimaced as she held the shirt out in front of her. "We weren't even playing strip poker."

"Think of it as a bonus." 'Jesse' winked.

"I've seen a lot of bad people in a very short period of time. I like to think I've gotten a decent grasp of distinguishing between the sincere and the opportunists at this point. When I look at you... I don't see a bad person."

Asad furrowed his brow as the girl continued.

"But who am I to say? I don't know you. For all I know, you were assigned to guard me because you're an expert manipulator. Maybe you're the most rotten of the bunch! I don't want to believe that."

Averting his gaze, Asad clenched his jaw as he raised his wine glass to his lips. He couldn't blame the girl, she had found herself in a very difficult position, in a house surrounded by people who couldn't care less, or worse, want to see her fail. A girl her age, with nobody to confide in, must be hard.

"I can't trust anyone. Do you know what that's like?"

Taking a sip of his wine, the man smiled sadly as he shrugged his shoulders. "No, I don't. But then again, I generally don't find myself important enough to cut off from the rest of the world."

"Shine on you crazy diamond Ruffles."

Taking the bottle of whiskey in her hands again, Pixie laughed at Aesop, "High off yer ass, already? God damn, what does he put in that stuff?" The bandit queen's nostrils flared when she caught a whiff of the burning cannabis. After reeling back in disgust, she plugged her nose and took a swig of her drink. "Fuck, that shit smells awful! I'm gonna 'ave ta' drink jus' ta' dull my senses!" She gave Aesop a light shove on the shoulder before flopping onto her back.

With the back of her head against the arms rest, she stretched one leg out and bent the other while holding the bottle of whiskey up in the air. Her eye searched the faded label on the bottle. It was getting harder to read.

Was the alcohol getting to her already?

The sooner the better.

Pixie grinned, "Damn, this brings me back. Don' know 'bout you, but back when I was on the right-side of 20 I used ta' spend my nights like this all the time. Those Maidens were a rowdy fuckin' bunch." She laughed, sadly. "I used ta' be quite the tramp, ya' know? Don' reckon there were many cocks on the ship back then that I didn' know my way around. Bein' an outlaw who could do anything you pleased? I don' know of many others on this shitball that wouldn' 'ave done the same in my position. I felt like the queen'a the fuckin' world." She looked at Aesop in her periphery. "Sorry you didn' join until I was well outta my slut phase. Reckon I'd 'ave wrecked yer shit too!" She snickered and took another swig.

"No, I don't. But then again, I generally don't find myself important enough to cut off from the rest of the world."

"Some people revel in their so-called importance. I suppose I used to be one of those people, looking back." Elizabeth shook her head. "I used to be so naive. I lived my entire childhood taking without asking any questions. Sure, there were expectations set for me at a young age, but nothing that was too demanding. It wasn't until all this started that I realized how oblivious I had been. Just... so stupid."

She finished her second glass of wine and grinned at Asad, "Enough about my desperate plight! If you don't stop me I'll just keep rambling about this all night." Planting her elbow on the table, she rested her jaw on her knuckles and held her glass out for a refill. "Tell me about yourself, Major. Not about your profession or anything like that. More... personal stuff, I suppose. Tell me about your family and friends. Girlfriends?" She looked at his naked hand. "I take it there isn't a Mrs. Harel?"

"I take it there isn't a Mrs. Harel?"

Topping up the young woman's glass, Asad chuckled. "No, no Mrs. Harel, something my mother is keen to remind me at every opportunity." The Major nursed his own drink, he would have to make it last, he couldn't risk drinking any more. "She'd like to see some grandchildren before she dies." He smiled. "Her exact words. my mother isn't one for subtly, which I suppose makes it easy for people to know how she's feeling." This was nice, despite the circumstances, not what he was expecting, pleasantly enough.

"They live here in Feroxi actually, my mom and dad I mean." He looked down at the tablecloth. "Haven't seen them in a few months. I call occasionally, but not as often as my mother would like, no doubt." Looking up at the girl, Asad smiled. "No girlfriend, I had this... thing, the other night, we both got drunk, one thing lead to another." Asad's features softened at the memory. He didn't realise how much he enjoyed that night, how much he enjoyed being with Tsubaki. They hadn't talked much since then.

"I dunno where that's going. I really like the woman, but the whole situation is... complicated." He had visited Bryan and Jun briefly, exchanged small talk, then left. Asad didn't really think it was guilt, so much as really just not looking forward to explaining everything. Maybe he wouldn't have to, that really depended on how Tsubaki felt about the whole thing.

He turned his hands over. "See, still boring. I'm afraid I'm not a terribly interesting person, my Lady."

'Boundaries, Asad. Boundaries.'

"Damn, this brings me back. Don' know 'bout you, but back when I was on the right-side of 20 I used ta' spend my nights like this all the time."

"Pixie I've been an alchy since I was a teenager, I could drink your ass under the table like nothing if I wanted." He proudly smiled, his inhibitions and the voice in his mind telling him what is and isn't appropriate shutting up.

"Sorry you didn' join until I was well outta my slut phase. Reckon I'd 'ave wrecked yer shit too!"

Aesop laughed without his usual awkwardness. His senses dulled and Ruffles magic setting in to work, he could relax easily. "Not saying I wouldn't enjoy that, but I would have been about 14 back when the maiden started being a thing, and I didn't stop being a cop until I was about 16, 17. I doubt you'd wanna fuck anyone who should still be in school. Even if I was less hairy back then." His hand returned to his glorious beard, stroking it like a wise sage.

"... I doubt you'd wanna fuck anyone who should still be in school. Even if I was less hairy back then."

Pixie's thoughts immediately went to Amy.

I wonder what she's doin' now...

After pushing those thoughts to the back of her mind, Pixie put her hand to her chest and laughed, "Man, you don' 'ave a clue what I was like, do you? Back in the day I never fucked any of those pansy-ass mother fuckers who shave themselves. No, I liked 'em dirty and hairy." She took a small sip of her whiskey. "The smell was... intoxicating. But you know, I started branchin' out eventually. Bennie showed me a whole 'nother side of love makin' I never knew existed."

Hitting her forehead with her palm, she closed her eye and tried to suppress a hardy laugh, "Don' reckon I ever told you, but I almost got into Florian's pants when we first recruited 'im! I was so goddamn close to fuckin' a priest!" She wore a small smile and opened her eye. "Now he's got another lucky lady tryin' ta' get under 'is collar."

If he's even alive, that is...

"See, still boring. I'm afraid I'm not a terribly interesting person, my Lady."

Elizabeth had already finished half of her third glass by the time Asad had finished his tale. At this point she was rather... loose.

The food hadn't even arrived yet.

She slouched back in her chair and got comfortable. A small smile formed between her two rosey cheeks, "I suppose I could say the same thing about my love life: 'complicated'." She chuckled. "I had a few crushes when I was younger. Other noble boys. Nothing ever series, really. They always lived far away and I rarely saw them for more than a week a year. Before I knew it I was eighteen already, with no real experience, and I was being married off to my late sister's widower." Her grin wavered. "There was a man I met during my time with the Maidens that I think... I think I may have had a thing for him. Then again, I suppose it could have just been Stockholm syndrome. He was nice though. And... he protected me..."

After hesitating a moment she picked up her glass and finished it, "I don't know though. I am really clueless when it comes to these things. I mean," She laughed. "I'm still a virgin, after all." Yeah, she was drunk. "And I'm not one of those fake virgins most young nobles claim to be! I-I-I've never even seen a man's... well, except that one time... oh my, what am I saying!?" She doubled over laughing and slapped the table.

Eddie's... it was horrifying!

Aesop couldn't deny that... well it was kinda hot. Pixie certainly was a looker but he'd never thought about trying anything.

"Bennie showed me a whole 'nother side of love makin' I never knew existed."

Aesop had questions about Bennie, yet wondered whether or not it was a good idea to ask them. Bennie was so clean, weirdly clean for a Bandit. He didn't seem to carry the baggage of others, he seemed cool headed, and oddly kind, when he wasn't being judgemental. But how could he be when he supposedly got almost the entirety of one of the old crews killed?

"Don' reckon I ever told you, but I almost got into Florian's pants when we first recruited 'im! I was so goddamn close to fuckin' a priest!"

Aesop's jaw dropped to the floor as he turned to Pixie. "FUCK! OFF!"

"Now he's got another lucky lady tryin' ta' get under 'is collar."

"Woah woah woah woah woah slow down slow down." He took another pull from his badly made joint, holding it in for as long as he could before exhaling through the nose. "What is happening?"

Lilith closed her eyes as she slid down the hull, crossing her legs as she sat in the corridor outside Gale and Allie's room.

Sipping at the glass whiskey in her hand, she lit up a cigarette, taking a deep drag, she moved her head from side to side, cracking her neck gently. The woman felt oddly lethargic, she didn't really want to be at the party, there was too much going on in her head.

"Where are you?" She cooed gently as she stretched out one leg, pulling the other to her chest as she draped her arm over her knee. "Not getting yourself in trouble, I hope." She missed being in the same room as him, even when they weren't talking, it was just nice to be in his company. Compared to the others, Florian was so grounded, so unassuming, and just... so damn handsome. Just the thought of some fucker torturing him was just...

Clenching her jaw, Lilith took a deep drag before take a gulp of whiskey. Why was he even sent to Frostfall? Everyone was really vague about that. Was it because he was the only person on the ship who was fluent in the language? Did he have friends up there? Nobody had told her anything. The worst feeling was not knowing if he was okay. He could be dead and she wouldn't know, would she ever know? She needed to do something, anything.

Even if she had to go to Frostfall by herself.

========================================

Asad rested his chin on the back of his laced fingers as the young noble got progressively more intoxicated, revealing all kinds of personal details he wasn't sure her needed, or wanted, to know.

'You should probably cut off the booze as some point, old boy, or at least get her to talk about something else.'

"This man, this Maiden, tell me about him. He wasn't here in Feroxi I take it?" With every question, he painted a picture of the girl. As hard faced and confident as she appeared, she was still a young girl, it was safe to assume she had all the same issues, all the same flights of fancy. If anything, Asad found the slow dissection of her persona intriguing. Maybe she wanted to let the façade down too? Maybe that was the reason she was drinking to begin with? Or maybe she was just so bored out of her mind being locked up in the apartment all day, who could say?
