Hands on her hips, Lilith chuckled as glanced at the gathering crowd. Taking a deep drag, she finished off her cigarette. Lifting her foot, she stubbed it out on the bottom of her boot. Glancing behind her, she tossed the stub for one of the new kids to catch. "Ta." She winked at the boy.
Turning back to face Bennie, without bending her knees, the young woman leaned forward, touching the tips of her boots with her fingers, repeating the action twice more before cracking her knuckles and taking up a fighting stance, her hands unclenched.
"Show me what you got, big man." She smirked.
Bennie did his own stretches; twisting his torso back and forth, he laughed. "What did I teach you about patience, Lily?" he joked. After finishing his stretches, he moved his neck left-to-right, cracking it each time. "Alright kiddo, let's see how steady that stream is." Stepping forward with his dominate foot, he bent his knees and held his fists out in front of his face. Muay Thai, Bennie's favorite hand-to-hand style.
Lilith furrowed her brow ever so slightly. Of course he wouldn't make the first move, this wasn't Pixie she was fighting.
'Start off easy, I guess.' quickly stepping forward, the woman threw the first punch, nothing heavy, but enough to get the ball rolling.
Bennie weaved inside the blow and knocked her fist away with the back of his wrist. "Really?" he taunted as he danced around her front and elbowed her in in between the shoulder blades. He turned casually to see her as she stumbled forward. "You're hesitating."
Grunting as regained her stance, she quickly turned to face the man. "I forgot how quick you are." Stepping in towards Bennie, Lilith threw another punch, this time setting herself up to respond to the man's inevitable counter.
Bennie chuckled as he stepped backward, letting the blow lick the empty air in front of his face. "Come on," he said, beckoning her to press the attack. "Stop being so afraid. I'm standing right here."
Now he was just toying with her. "You can't get me with that trick, I get people with that trick, I know that trick."
"Trick?" Bennie repeated with a grin. "When your enemy outclasses you, has you on the ropes, the last thing they will think to do is trick you." Readying his fists once more, he eased into his fighting stance. "An opponent like me will be confident in their own abilities. Use that certainty. Make them unknow what they've always known." Suddenly and without warning, Bennie sprung forward with a right hook towards Lilith's shoulder.
Lilith knew all this talk was for the sake of the rookies, but that didn't stop her wanting to slap the grin from off his face. Raising her hands, she grabbed the man's arm. Travelling with his momentum as she stepped into his guard, quickly raising a knee to hit the man in the gut.
Bennie consigned himself to the blow and tensed his abdomen in response. "Now," he coughed just as soon as the blow landed, "sometimes you need to take a hit in order to gain the upper-hand!" As he explained this, he grabbed the leg she'd kneed him with and swept her off her feet. As she hit the floor on her back, the big man came crashing down on top of her, his forearm resting uncomfortably against her throat. "The key lies in knowing how much punishment you can take in order to do so." Smiling, he finally addressed Lilith specifically. "You've gotten better. Can't say I'm surprised."
Coughing slightly, the girl smiled. "I've had to use it a lot recently." She shrugged her shoulders. "Not enough to beat you, it seems."
Sprout entered the room just on time to see Bennie ease off the girl and help her to her feet. Leaning in the doorway to the hangar, Sprout crossed his arms over his chest and laughed.
"Yeah, you laugh, kid," Bennie said with a snicker. "Like you'd do any better." Looking to Lilith, he patted her on the shoulder. "You'll get there someday, Lily. Hell, whether you know it or not, you were holding back."
Slouching slightly, the girl glanced up at the crowd. She knew she was gonna go down, but she didn't want it to end that quickly. "Maybe, I dunno."
Bennie gave her a knowing look. Without another word, he put an arm around her back and walked her into the crowd. "Lesson's over, Maidens. You can get back to beating each other senseless," he said.
Once the two of them were safely away from the centre of the room, Bennie chuckled and rustled the woman's hair. "I keep treating you like a kid, but you're a full grown woman now, aren't you?" he admitted. "Maybe I was a little hard on you out there. Sorry. You really have improved though."
The hair ruffle caught the girl by surprise. An almost perplexed look on her face, Lilith blinked a few times before a shy smile curled her lips. "Thanks Bennie." She averted her eyes, her cheeks redenning slightly.
She felt like a kid again.
"Don't mentioned it," he told her. "I know things have been weird here lately, but just give it some time. Life's all about change. It's not an easy concept to swallow, and you're never ready for it when it happens, but it's necessary. You'll come out stronger for it. We all will."
"Yeah, I hear ya." Stuffing her hands into the pockets of her shorts, she looked up at the man. "Hey, er, do you think we could start training together again?" She laughed nervously. "I reckon there's still a lot more for me to learn, and nobody else here is as good a teacher as you."
Sparring with Bennie again. It would be just like the old days.
"I was waiting for you to ask," Bennie said with a big smile. "Always were my best student."
The girl raised an eyebrow, crossing her arms over her chest. "That would mean something if I weren't your only student."
"Hey, Sprout was one too," he corrected her. "Though, Pixie oversaw most of his training. That kid's a fuckin' prodigy if I ever saw one. It's kinda weird. Sure, Pixie's one of the best fighters I have ever met, but not because of technique. The kid's got a knack for picking up that kinda stuff for some reason."
"I have a few ideas." Lilith muttered as she pulled out her smokes. Lighting a cigarette, she blew the smoke from the corner of her mouth. "So..." She nodded back over at the room full of hopefuls. "See anyone you like the look of yet?" The cigarette hung loosely from her lips as she smirked. "I like that Gale kid, she's got sass."
"Yeah, she's an interesting one for sure," he agreed. "I don't know. If we're not speaking strictly of rookies, I'd say Whiskey. She's a rare woman, that one. Could give Pixie a run for her money in the T&A department." He laughed. "Sorry, I'm sure you get enough of that bullshit from Sprout, eh?"
"Yeah, yeah, it's great for you guys." Lilith pouted. "Where's my eye candy?" She glanced over at the rookies. "Not a looker on the whole ship."
"That Jesse punk not do it for you?"
An unamused expression creased the girl's brow. "Kid's like eight." She took a long drag. "I've took care of a kid long enough to last me a life time already." She nodded towards Sprout.
Bennie nodded. "I bet," he agreed. "Well, there are a few other young men aboard, but somehow I don't think they have the edge to them you're looking for. Maybe after a few battles that'll change."
Shrugging her shoulders, Lilith stuffed her hands in her pockets. "So er, what do you wanna do now?"
"We could get drinks," he suggested, "or we could watch these kids beat the shit out of each other." He laughed. "Or both."
Grinning, Lilith nudged Bennie with her shoulder. "See, this is why I missed you."

"Does this kind of environment suit you? I'd say you take to it well enough, but are you actually comfortable surrounded by such sterile... falsehoods?"
Asad smiled wryly. "You might not think it, considering my choice of profession." The Major took another sip of wine. "I'm not a fan of lying." He shrugged his shoulders. "Something I imagine will be in abundance this evening." Looking at the girl, the man furrowed his brow. "What you're doing is different, you're only trying to protect yourself. I can respect that."
