Subjects, he was made by the gods to eat all the impurities in the world. Apparently he was once handsome. But the gods didn't realize how much impurity was there and he ate it all turning him into that. So because the gods did that to him he rose up against them and lost.
My favorite Esper in the game though is this little guy:

He's my little shrimpy and he's only a baby. He's cursed to forever be a baby because even as a baby he was as powerful as the gods so they feared how powerful he'd be when he were full grown. Then they banished the poor baby because they didn't like him and forced him to be in a dark mine alone for eons.

Subject Sass, I won't. There are 13 Espers in the game that you can get. Each one is different and they were all banished by the Gods because the rebelled against them for pretty legitimate reasons. Like Chaos because he was cursed with the wheel of life and ever strapped to it. He would die every time there was a large amount of death or when the gods were pissy and was then brought to life again so they could do it all again. Yeah the gods in this game are huge pricks if you couldn't tell.
Subject Toast, weird yes; awesome even more. I mean there is one that looks like a Goat and is the oldest of the Espers that has a goatee. Night then.
