Matilda sat in her cell, curled into a tight ball against the far wall. The orderlies stupidly chosen not to restrain her with a jacket, or even cuffs, a choice she would hopefully make them regret.
There was a small white rabbit doll laid down next to her, it was scruffy and one of its eyes was hanging on but a few threads.
"Do.... do you think they will come back jerry? do you think... they care?" Matilda said into the air.
"Yes.... you're right, they will come back, you make me so happy jerry, they would never.... never do that."
Matilda had been in solitary confinement for the past two weeks and had seen little of the new arrivals, only a few glances out of her food slot, and even then what she saw hadn't been clear. "NO!! noooo!," she screamed "They would never dooo that, they wouldn't hurt me!"
She kicked the doll away, crying as if it had said something horrific.
A few minutes later, while she continued to sob an orderly walked up to her door and peeked through the slot, "matilda, listen, you're free to go this afternoon, if you don't stop making so much noise they might leave you in there" he told her through the slot.
Her sobbing slowly subsided and she looked up at the man "ok, I will hold my tongue for now, YOU HOLDER!..... sorry.. sorry," she said, jittering snuffling slightly. The man walked away and she stood to walk over to the door to watch the hallway, she remained there for a long time.
