did you read that? The germans apologized in 2004, they just won't pay reparations
No, not "the Germans" apologized. Arguably the lowest ranking minister of the German cabinet apologized. To put the importance of that person in perspective: The current holder of that position actually wanted to abolish the whole ministry before his party won the election.

When "the Germans" apologize for genocide then it's done by the official representative of the Federal Republic of Germany: The Federal President. And if he's not available, then at least by the head of the German government and the most influential person in the state: The Federal Chancellor. Like President Gauck who visited Yad Vashem just this year. Or the iconic picture of Chancellor Willy Brandt falling on his knees in Warsaw and asking the Polish for forgiveness.

Claiming that "the Germans" apologized because Mrs. Wieczorek-Zeul did is a major inaccuracy in the wikipedia-article, I am sorry for that.

I find it odd that the IRA is being so heatedly debated in a thread relating to the atrocities and evils of nations. History teaches us that when one group of people fuck with another there are consequences. Sometimes these last for a long time, becoming seemingly illogical. This is the post-colonial legacy. Its just ironic that Britain's first colony became its most problematic, and is a testament to the enduring colonial legacy: the fall out for the sins of past.

Not every sin committed in the past is relevant today, but just as you implied, it is simply ignorant not to recognize the importance of historic conflicts/atrocities. Just look at the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. Can't think of an example more compelling than that one.

Oh god.... all the things the British Empire did wrong?
I dunno where to even start. We enslaved, 'colonized', went on religious crusades and.... you know what I think I don't want to go on.
has this become bash Britain's history thread? i doubt you've even researched a single shread about the what happened during the empire period, i think it's time we dropped the guilt trip
we have over what happened before we were born. none of this sins of the father rubbish.
India would never be the economic powerhouse it is today without uk intervention. and Hong Kong would still be a sleepy fishing village, but now it's a business mecca to rival new york and London.

Slavery, although there's probably been about 16 pages about it thus far.
Fucking up every government in Latin America, the whole thing with the Iranian shah, and Vietnam.

Also, in America, people like Snooki are allowed to reproduce.

Sweden, hmm, what the fuck did we do? You Americans created the stupid Fahrenheit scale to confuse the rest of the world, so Celcius isn't a bad thing.

We were one of the most progressive countries in Scientific racism i the 1920's, so there's that I guess. Though our whole government is in denial about it, so so much for that.

Damn it, why couldn't we have killed some jews or something in the 30's? We're so goddamn boring.
We were part of that whole Thirty year war thingy. And we hade some slavery in the 1600s. And that is that.
Also, you know, Vikings. Quite apart from the whole raping and pillaging rep they have, they where keeping slaves before it was cool, which i think was one of the main motives for the pillaging etc.
