Yea, as much as I love Mass Effect, I can't say that the outfit design is one of the reasons. missed some unique, interesting style. I guess designing convincing and interesting clothes for a sci-fi world is kinda difficult, but still. I wonder if those game studios actually hire teams of professional fashion designers for these outfits. Anyone knows?

And, yea, the character creation is truly awful. No matter how hard I tried, I wasn't able to create a BroShep that really suited my taste more than the default one. Fortunately, I was happy with the default FemSheps.

I like how this went to armors.

Good:

Basic, functional, and all while still looking fucking awesome. (Seriously, I think the actual military isn't far off from making these possible

Bad:

I'm sorry but what the hell am I looking at?

It's like I'm wearing spandex.

Some like it, to me though it's the boots. They just don't match and the rest of the armor just falls with them. Speaking of awful because of boots.....

My problem with his design is just that it's silly, even by Sonic standards. Why the overdesigned shoes (same issue I would raise with that ridiculous SOAP shoe thing in Sonic Adventure 2)? Why the glyphs on his hand, to really make him seem "futuristic"? Or signify his telekinetic powers in some ridiculous manner? Why the facepalm hair?

It's not the worst design of the franchise by far, but it's still just... bleugh.

As far as the potential for gameplay goes, sure, they all had sufficient potential. Just too bad the implementation was so abysmal.

Despite his first appearance being in the worst game I've ever had the experience of playing I do feel that something could "save" him. Make him a core game but not in the sense of Shadow the Hedgehog, just make a sonic styled game but with use of Telekenesis, it can sound pretty fucking awesome if done right.

To me it's like Never Ending Story 3, Silver is Jack Black throughout the whole thing, you can tell he is the only one with any sense of "trying" to be good. Everyone else sucks ass and is boring, and everything else is fucking awful as well but he is I guess you could say the one thing that really has any potential good behind it.

But thats just my opinion as far as I know the fanbase can figure out how to make worse designs. Seriously, never google Your first name and "The Hedgehog" it really will hurt your brain.

While I like the Spartan design of Halo, if the green parts in the first picture are the protection-providing armor plates, then he's not very well protected, particularly in the crucial and easy-to-hit midriff area.

As for your two pictures of Mass Effect (1, I believe?) and the Space Marines. Not exactly to your taste, I get that, neither to mine. But both can make sense (relatively speaking), depending on how technology evolves. For Mass Effect, it would just be a somewhat flexible material that offers the best compromise between protection and comfort. For the Space Marines, it would be the opposite, perhaps average calibers have increased a lot so these thick plates are the only feasible way to offer reasonable protection.

Well, if we're talking about black characters, then there is a reason why in Japanese games they tend to be more stereotypical than in Western games. There's hardly any black people over there, and since they don't have the same history with them as we do in the West, they have much less stigma about portraying them in a stereotypical way. I'm not saying that means that it's okay for them to do it, it's just the reason they do.

But on the topic of character designs in general, I think one of the reasons that Japanese design can go wrong is because often they are designed around their costume, rather than their actual physical appearance. Granted, Western design is guilty of this too to some extent, but in Japanese games they more often tend to design characters with perfect, flawless, and homogenised facial and general physical appearance, and then differentiate them with improbable hair styles and elaborate costumes. I think it's a trait that's bled over from anime and manga, since they tend to imitate that art style. This isn't always the case, but when bad Japanese character design exists, it's often for this reason.

Western games have a similar problem too. I think it's a more recent thing, because it hasn't had as strong an influence from other media like Japanese game have had. But more recently it's become common for characters to be the "everyman" archetype, so that players can relate to them and/or self-insert. So it's lead to an endless stream of dull, generic, 30-something, white men with short, brown hair. In a way they're even worse than their Japanese counterparts because this dull and non-specific style encompasses costume too. So many wear just jeans and a t-shirt, or a jacket or something. Or maybe generic, uncharacteristic space marine power armour.

One piece of character design I've been impressed with lately though is Raiden in Metal Gear Rising. His body has a lot of detail, and it looks very tangible and real. It has a hell of a lot of style to it, but it looks like it could actually exist too. You can actually imagine how it would feel to touch it.

Other favourites include things like the designs in Okami and Wind Waker. They're simple, but very expressive. I really like how they've managed to soak Okami in a traditional Japanese influence, yet still made characters that look very distinct. Zelda has always had some of the best designs for non-human races too. Really inventive stuff, but still looks natural and charming.

I also used to really like the look of the costumes in Assassin's Creed. Specifically, around the renaissance era stuff. Yeah, it got pretty flamboyant towards the end. So far that it was far from stealthy, but it looked gorgeous. All the little design details were so lovingly crafted, but it didn't look over-designed to me either. It was, after all, still the outfit of a rich nobleman of the renaissance. It still managed to keep true to the aesthetic as well. It could never be mistaken for anything other than Assassin's Creed. Ezio's face, on the other hand, wasn't that interesting. I suppose he had that scar, but not much else that was particularly distinct.

For best design, I would say the ODST armour.
Distinct, cool and practical. It seems like something that someone would actually wear, and I espicially love the helmet, shoulders and boots.

For worst, it's the outfit of Makoto Nanaya.
It's just so blatantly fanservice and hideously impractical. I get that she can't wear normal trousers because of her tail, but seriously? Half a sports top, thigh-high socks and a freaking thong with napikns clipped to it? Woman, at least put a tank top and some shorts on or something!

Really? I am going to be the first one to mention Ivy from Soul Calibur?

Come to think of it, she is difficult to mention her in this regard. Her design is very impractical for the kind of game she's in, but is it bad design? I'll leave the question to you, the reader.

As for good character design, I really like the designs of Link and Samus. Heck, most Nintendo characters have a very distinct look about that. Also, the team fortress 2 characters are incredibly colorful and have a lot of personality in their design alone.

As for bad character design well....Most modern fps protagonists look incredibly generic.

Im sorry but I can't see the bad character design over all the boobies.
Its a japanese game, I don't even mind when they do that anymore, I just wish they'd give me some male eye-candy too.

Yeah, it is japanese, but it really bugs me when something is blatantly built just for sex appeal. I don't like to be reminded that some people will only buy it if it has tits.

Mentioning Final Fantasy for worst design in this thread already feels like beating a dead horse that's stuck under another dead horse, but GODDAMMIT IF THIS TWATCAKE ISN'T MENTIONED IN THIS THREAD THEN I WILL DO IT!

The worst part is he doesn't even have the worst character design, it's just that he being an insufferable little shit amplifies the atrociousness of his costume, making him one insurmountable pain in the ass.

Huh, now that I look at it, his shoes actually look quite sensible.

As for best design... weelll Kratos has been mentioned already, but he is IMO definitely as iconic as Mario or Link. Oh, and Team Fortress 2 probably has the best character designs ever.

Wh... wha... what... WHAT IN THE NAME OF JESUS TEABAGGING CHRIST AM I LOOKING AT? Is that a sword or... what the hell is that thing supposed to be? I know japanese character designs featuring swords often tend to stray towards the absurd, but that is just beyond words. That's like the Dragonslayer from Berserk had sex with Cloud's Buster Sword from FFVII and then irradiated the fetus until it suffered copious elephantitis. Jesus christ.

Assuming, of course, that it even is a sword, but I've got no clue what else that thing could be.

How about non-humanoid characters, who don't need clothing to express their identity? We need more of those.

On topic, I think Kirby has to be the ultimate design for a vg character.

It's complicated. It looks like a sword, but it's actually magitek power armour. That sword is it's dormant form. When it's active, it turns into...
As much as I love Blazblue, it's designs are so insane and fanservicey sometimes. I posted Makoto further up the page, and while she is my fav character... just look at my earlier post, that'll explain it.

Look, I really love JoJos Bizarre Adventure (there have been games!), but I'm actually not sure if those characters design-wise are bad, amazing or the best thing ever. What I'm getting at is that you shouldn't put much stock in my opinions on the matter.

As for good design, Naoto Shirogane instantly won me over. Unique and instantly identifiable, but not weird or suffering from the JRPG problem of 5 million belts and straps. I can understand an actual human dressing like Naoto does.

As for bad design, I really didn't like Enochs look in El Shaddai. The idea of weird, angelic armour is fine, but inconsistent bits of white armour on top and just plain jeans on bottom in a surreal fantasy setting was just too bland for that games aesthetic.

Best character design I've seen is the Team Fortress 2 classes.

I'd say they're perfect. Shame they cocked it up with all the hats and stuff, but still. Their base models are pretty much perfect.

Dark Souls has some amazing character designs.

Oblivion had some disgusting character designs.

Say what you want about Skyrim but you have to admit its character designs are much better than Oblivion.
