All the CoD games have a British faction up until WaW I belive
This is true, however their activity is purely limited to Africa. They completely disregard all efforts in Italy, Normandy, Holland, Belgium and Germany.

Probably the best game for recognising wide participancy within the war is Battlefield 1942 (an EA produced game) and specifically the Battlegroup 42 mod (made by some hardcore history nuts).

UK has Rockstar, Lionhead, Rare, Free Radical (now Crytek UK) and many others. I feel however the government does not provide enough support or encouragement though.
That's about to change. The new conservative goverment (let's face it, the Lib Dems aren't going in and Gordon Brown is DEFFINATELY out) wants to give tax cuts to the UK gaming creators.

Yeah they're going to try and capitalise on Germanys recent violent games ban. A load of their games devs are moving out of the country.

Historically it's definitely japan. the development industry has been in decline there for a while though, so now it's probably the U.S.

Bioware was founded in Canada? [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bioware]

US. I mean, it's where Bethesda is based, as well as many others. And Valve. I guess France ranks quite high, with Ubisoft.

Definitely not Japan.
Isn't a lot of the best Ubisoft coming out of the Montreal branch though? They did all the best Splinter Cell games (1,3 and let's face it, Conviction is going to be the dog's b*llocks).

I'd have to say Canada and America are at a tie with me.

I think he means they have Bioware Austin which is currently working on Star Wars: The Old Republic. But BioWare itself was in fact - as you said - founded in Canada and currently have their headquarters there.

That's exactly what I mean, but if you look back at the first post, the list lists companies more than once, so it's probably not just about their headquarters.

Works for me.

That's how I was stuck on Canada and America being tied. And BioWare seemed to have picked Texas because it offers tax incentives if you build a company there. That's a pretty smart move on BioWare's part; you get to extend your territory further, explore more mature themes on either front and you get a tax break out of it.

I'd suggest you'd be looking at the USA, UK and Japan as the biggest computer game-writing nations. The USA will almost certainly be the largest simply because it's a far larger country, but all of them have contributed a huge amount in different ways, and it's probably a bit pointless to say which is best.

Also bear in mind different countries like different games. The UK and USA are pretty similar. Japan has quite an individualistic games culture, and many titles aren't released in Europe and possibly the USA.

For this reason, I'd also put in some defence for places like France and Germany. They're easily overlooked, but a lot of continental Europeans like types of strategy, RPG and adventure games that have much smaller markets in the English-speaking world, so we're much less aware of much of their output.

America I guess. Those third worldish sounding countries can SOMETIMES be alright, IF THEY DO IT RIGHT... but yeah.

They (Ubisoft Montreal) also did Prince of Persia :sands of time,PoP 2 thrones,Assasin's creed, the Rainbow 6 series and Far Cry 2 amongst others.

They're also the ones currently developping Assasin's creed 2
Go Montreal! ;)
