Also, honorable mention goes to Halo: Reach. Not a huge fan of the game or the series, but I did appreciate the ending. It was very well executed.
I loved that ending, knowing you were going to die but prolonging it and hoping it just didnt happen, and then a true heroes ending.
Heh. I just walked up to the first grunt and let him shoot me. No point in killing any more than neccesary.

Besides, I did that grunt a favour. He took out a cyborg soldier single handedly. He'll never have trouble getting laid ever again.

Although the ending cutscene did subvert my noble intentions somewhat by having me gun down a bunch of elites. But it was well done cutscene, so I don't hold it against the game.

I don't really know why I consider this ending one of my favorites but since red dead redimibtion had already been mentioned I might as well say it. I always liked the ending of sonoc adventure 2 where basically everyone bands togthere to beat a much bigger threat. I think what I reallu luked wad when Dr Robotnik (eggman) talks about why he became scentist in the first place. Not the best written ending but still one of my favioriets.

I'd have to say Red Dead Redemption.

The fact that you see it coming from a mile away, and it STILL manages to hit you like a truck is really something.

And the part with Marston's son at the very end is also a lot more meaningful than people give it credit for.

Red Dead Redemption has easily the best ending in my book.
Unfortunately it was ruined by the free-roam option following said ending. If the game had ended with John then it would have been awesome. The idea that the story should be picked up by Jack just ruined the whole thing as far as I'm concerned. I'd much rather a story arc have some sort of closure than drag out endlessly so that the 100% completionists can go around skinning armadillos for some meaningless achievement. Some games lend themselves to free-roam modes, but RDR was (despite being a sandbox game) massively story driven, and stories should reach a conclusion.
I disagree.

The real significance of the sequence with his son, although really subtly delivered, is that he basically threw away the life his father died for, seeking vengeance. The very last part where he looks at his gun after killing the agent, you can tell he's just thinking that. It's a vicious cycle, like father like son.

I thought it was perfect, and complimented the ending really well.
Why do I get the feeling that this entire conversation is gonna be carried out in spoiler boxes?

I can kinda see where you're coming from there, as there is a certain bitter sting when Jack eventually becomes everything John didn't want him to be, but even then I feel the game should have ended when Jack shot Agent Ross. The supposed ending of RDR is very powerful indeed, and allowing people to play past it means it's impact is lessened. My overriding memory of RDR should have been John's sacrifice, or as you rightly point out Jack's cold-blooded revenge, but it isn't. It's riding around aimlessly to the endless repetition of "Work, ya damn nag!" - and that's a poor memory to have of a very strong storyline.

The good ending of inFamous 2. How has this not been said yet?

Portal 2's ending, and this should go without saying.

I also liked the endings of Half-Life 2 and HL2: Episode 2. Even if Episode 2 presented a huge cliffhanger and we still don't know how it turns out. Not that I didn't like E1's ending, but that was pretty much expected. It was still pretty cool though.

This. Will assume everyone that will play it, has done so. It's been almost 10 years, so too bad if you haven't. When she fell through him and just laid there. That was a genuinely saddening moment.

Or Mass Effect 1. Shepard walking away from w/e council you ended with, moving into the dramatic planet shot and into the casting music that was absolutely perfect for it. Incredibly satisfying every time.

I personally loved the ending of Alice: Madness Returns. It was so... symbolical and it was neither here nor there. It left something to the imagination which is largely what the story was about. I think it wrapped up the series perfectly.

Hm, agreed.

Toward the end I was starting to tire of that game. It just like it was being dragged out.

So it was a pleasant surprise when they actually managed to hammer out a fitting conclusion and ending. One that made sense, but still had a pleasing degree of ambiguity. It managed to leave me with a good impression after all.

Oh, sorry I actually agree with you. I must have misunderstood you, since you said "It should have ended with John", I thought you meant not including the little after sequence with Jack. No I agree, but the story really ends with Jack. The free roam at the end is just there for shits and giggles, and I didn't really play it too much.

Also, while we're on the topic. I also really enjoyed Halo: Combat Evolved's ending.

That final bit, racing through an exploding ship on a Warthog is iconic in itself, and lots of games have tried to copy the high octane feel of the ending because it worked so well (among other things they copied from the game). The game really ended on a high note and I enjoyed the ending level.
Ah, good old crossed internet wires. Damn, I really wanna replay RDR after I get home from work now...

Halo:CE had a decent ending, but I couldn't drive Warthogs for shit back then so I saw more of the respawn screen than I did of that level!

Back OT: I enjoyed GTA:Vice City's Scarface-esque ending too, but that suffered from free-roam-itis as well.

god there's just so many awesome ones...

I'll say final fantasy x gave me a tingle of sadness.

Kingdom Hearts 2 made me cry... beautiful music aswell. (Btw KH3 is shaping up to be the most epic end to a franchise ever :p)

Final Fantasy 8 ended... and I was like: 'Now what do I do with myself?!' I'd been playing it for so long, and I was so invested in the characters... It helped at the time that I knew they were making a sequel... Only it never came :(

There's tons of others... I love a good ending :p
I hated the ending of FF X because I like the classic Final Fantasy happy ending so as bad as X-2 was i played it for the bonus ending and in my mind I just block out all the crap that was X-2, take that ending and just stick it onto the end of X. problem solved.

OT: I do not know about the best. I liked the ending of Final fantasy 9 althrough it was said because ViVi died and his monolog at the end where he is saying goodbye to his friends is sad. Also got to go with Half life 2: episode 2. I hate cliffhangers but after ep 2's ending I was shouting at my TV with rage saying "you cannot do that to him. bring back that flying bastard so I can kick it's arse I WANT VENGENCE!!!!!!!"

Infamous 2 hero ending.

I was halfway done writing up the whole thing and my feelings on it, but I figured someone would somehow accidentally spoil it for themselves.

So I'll say this: Making us do that last step IN GAMEPLAY...That was powerful. props to sucker punch, they know how to end a game.
