Call of Cthulhu. I just love the survival horror aspects and the different takes on simple things, such as healing and aiming the guns.

Can't decide between all the games in the Halo series that I've played (which is all except, shamefully, CE). So I'm just gonna say the whole series.

Raven shield, not question, no contest.

Why? if I have to explain then there is no point me trying (so I won't :p)

I go for Painkiller.
Just for sheer ridiculous fun, I'm kind of inclined to agree with this, at least for a pure/traditional FPS. It was like everything good about the old school ones I started out with, times ten.

For the more modern, story-based variety, I guess I'll be lazy and default to HL2 and its episodes.

For multiplayer, I'm leaning toward TF2, but I got a lot of mileage out of Q3, UT, Duke3D, and the Marathon games, too.

Edit: And GoldenEye, but it's aged pretty miserably compared to all the others.

The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay
Not sure if that counts since it's only part shooter, so if it doesn't, here are my favorite SP and MP shooters.
Metro 2033 and Shattered Horizon

Half Life 2. Near flawless design, memorable SP, groundbreaking animation, countless mods...

Using nostalgia to rate games is something I pretty much despise. How does it being the first game you had fun in with friends make it the best ever? How does anything being the first of anything make it any good?
Just to clarify: the most fun I had in an FPS MP was Doom 2 over the LAN. Nothing can compare to the grandeur of that first experience. Every other MP that I played after that was simply an extension of the novelty Doom 2 made me feel.

Nostalgia exists for a reason.

Battlefield 2 (and its expansions) on PC. There's simply so much you can do in this game that it has to be the best I've played. Bad Company 2 is filling the void (barely) while I wait with bated breath for Battlefield 3. DICE says they're putting the PC version first so I have hope. Frostbite engine is awesome and a new one would be ace!

Battlefield 2 or Counter-strike.

Battlefield 2 for the fact that it had such a sense of scale for its gameplay, big maps, large player count, jets, helicopters, something the Bad Company series could not have achieved despite having the ability to do so.

Counter-Strike for being one of those games where the game actually requires some sort of skill and aim. You can call it out for having the "AWP", but really, I've seen pubbies beat out "AWPers" in various ways.

A simple question, and all it needs is your favorite FPS game ever made and why. My awnser would be Bioshock. The reason for this is because it is very different to the normal FPS we have become used to which mainly envolves just running with a gun and shooting sombody in the head.

Bioshock had a storyline far better and more engrosing than something like for e.g. call of duty and the gameplay was very well made. The charaters were someintes annoying but overall they were very good and the enemys were just amazing. The only thing that it lacked was multiplayer but that could have ruiend it so I don't know if that is bad or not.
I would say Tribes just to tick my friends off because of a comment I made about Reach that they still won't let go

but BEST fps?

well

Single Player - PainKiller
Multiplayer - TF2
(in my opinion)

I'd throw Fallout 3 on there, but it's more of an RPG

and AvP2 had it's servers shot and killed, but it's still a great game

Single-Player: Deus-Ex.

Multi-Player: Quake 2. Simply put, Quake 2 had a mod community unlike any other, also it was the last old-style FPS to stand atop the FPS throne.
