Halo: Reach. I got it by mistake when my mother mistook it for Black Ops when grabbing me an early Christmas present as a surprise (which baffled the fuck out of me, since they're labeled the same way as DVDs), but I appreciated the effort too much to let her return it and exchange it.

So, I popped it in (which, by the way, meant it was no longer exchangeable) and started on Heroic. Not very fun, since not only had my life been dominated by two-hit-kill games like COD4 for quite a bit, but I was also getting my ass handed to me, so I was thoroughly disappointed. Then, after making the mistake of letting an AI ally take the wheel (at a checkpoint, literally in the middle of a gigantic skirmish where every other enemy was armed with 'Hog-tossing explosives... say it with me now: FUUUUUUUUUUCK), I switched it to Easy out of spite and blew through the campaign, without any feats feeling particularly rewarding. I was underwhelmed. So then I switched to online, got sucked into the universally addicting black hole that is Reach's multiplayer, and after a while, started to become intimately familiar with the game mechanics. It was at this point that I had an epiphany: most of the fun of Halo games come from playing according to the game's natural rhythm, and once you nail it down through repetition, it's a goddamn blast, and in my case, some of the most fun I've had with any game, ever.

Now, combine that with the RIDICULOUS amount of longevity I've squeezed out of it (almost two months of continuous play; I've borrowed some games from a friend that I've been dying to play, and have barely touched them). Because of this, I'm naming Reach as my favorite FPS of all time.

Half Life 2: Episode 3. They wouldn't be taking this long if it were not the greatest shooter ever to grace humanity.

Halo 2. Beautiful campaign. Innovations in modern games of any sort can't make up for a shit story, and poor campaign structure. (not to say all modern games are like that)

in anycase, an FPS favoritism thread!

*grabs popcorn*

Let the flamewar begin!

Classic Team Fortress on the 1.6 engine... Oh the memories of those Conc_ and pz_ + adventure maps... Oh the days... I think I could still get it from steam.

Golden Eye - N64

It's stood the test of time, I spent most of the last academic year playing multiplayer tournies in my school's common room. Best times. How many people still play the original Halo, or Doom on a regular basis?

There's just TOO FUCKING MANY COMPETITORS.
Here is a lists :3

Half-life (or 2)
TF2
Sauerbraten
Zeno Clash (if it counts)
Doom
Timesplitters 2 (haven't played FP)
Counter-Strike: Source
Garry's Mod, if it counts...

Those are all equally awesome in my opinion. It's probably also my lineup of favourite games...

Unreal Tournament.

None of the newfangled editions, neither of them come even remotely close to the original UT99. I have never played a game that gave me such an adrenaline rush nearly every time I played it.

Metroid Prime. I simply can't find anything wrong with it.
Bloody backtracking. It's one of my most replayed games, but every save stops when the backtracking starts.

If Bioshock scares you, System Shock will definitely scare you. Amnesia: The Dark Descent will make you pee your pants and jump out the window.

Either Call of Duty 4 or 007 Nightfire. I'd like to go back to Nightfire to see if it has aged well. I bet it hasn't.

Fuck your Goldeneye and your Perfect Dark, gimmie my monkey gun and dual assault rifles!
Okay fine but I get the Electro-Driver (Gun that shoots Shurikens and Lightning) and SMG-Flamer (SMG/Flame Thrower)
Ew.
Painkiller.
Ew.

Sorry, I just don't like that game. Based on demo anyway.
Better then Blops/Reach any day

I'd say "Sniper" was the best FPS ever, but I doubt being in an arcade with a giant toy sniper rifle headshotting people through the scope...

screw it that game was awesome and the best FPS ever (being that it had a WORKING scope and force feedback)

but I don't remember it's proper name... I think it is just "Sniper"
I believe you're thinking of...

SILENT SCOPE, THE BEST ARCADE GAME EVER MADE.

Of all time? That's so hard. For its innovations and contributions to the FPS scene, Goldeneye 64. But for its brilliant presentation, concept, and narrative, Bioshock. I'm inclined to say CoD4, but that game really only mastered what Goldeneye had originally conceived.

It's very close between those three.
