As an alumni of Clarkson University, I have to say Bonesaw the Video Game. 2D Platformer reminiscent of Megaman.

flOw is the only one that comes to mind for me.
FUUUUUUUUUU that game was a waste a good five dollers

anyway, TOUHOU 6! that game is mega hard, but very very fun! and the songs rock my jocks.
There's definitely something wrong with you if you spend $5 on a free game.

There's definitely something wrong with the PSN store if they charge $5 for a free game.

Because giving money to an independent developer is evil? Thatgamecompany is getting pretty big lately, I don't know if it is solely related to their success on PSN but I gladly paid money for Flower.

DWARF FORTRESS by Bay12

I've spent more time playing that game than most any full retail product released in the past 5 years. Hell, I've played it more than many of the games I've bought in those five years combined. It's brilliant, and once you get past the visual barrier, one of the most rewarding, clever, diverse, and strategic games ever made. There is simply no other game in existence which lets you do some of the things this game does, or to craft a world as involved or deep as is possible in this game. None.

I tried looking up Toribad and the result just lead me back here.
He means Toribash. A game with a brutal learning curve, but crazy depth. I actually bought earlier versions of the game to support them before it went freeware.

Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup and Spelunky but I don't feel like saying anything about them.

One that I feel deserves to be mentioned is Glum Buster. A sort of dreamlike 2d exploration game with puzzles. Very nice sound effects and low res graphics give you a great feeling that you are in a strange, fantastic place.

Another is Pandora's Gearbox. A really unique physics puzzle slash lock picking game where you are presented with puzzles with dark areas that seem almost impossible to work out until you start interacting and probing them. As you do that you start to build a mental picture of the puzzle, solve it, and then the lights come on and you get to see what was actually there.

I have to agree with everyone who has said Cave Story. I admit I never played the free version of it and got it on WiiWare, but it's worth it since Pixel gets some cash that way and not to mention that it's better than 99% of the stuff on WiiWare, PSN or XBL.

While it isn't free, I also love the XBL Indie game "Breath of Death VII"-it's the best dollar I ever spent and one of the better RPGs I've played since the PS1 era.

An old game called Warzone 2100, it's an RTS with a twist - you design all the units yourself, and there is a massive tech tree to work through. It's got quite a fun singleplayer campaign. For myself, what I always enjoyed was trying to keep ALL my units alive... for the ENTIRE campaign. This way they become stronger, and you get a sense of continuity through the campaign.

Anyway the source code was released or something so some guys went and remade the entire thing as a free standalone install. I *THINK* this is the right URL.

I tried downloading it and all it does is give me a screen on three trucks and a searchlight(?). A bit disappointing since it piqued my interest, but I'll keep trying. (Plus with my lack of expendable cash, free is good. Part of the reason I'm trying to get into PC gaming now along with my consoles.)

Indeed - I still play a round or two every day, its difficult enough to keep my attention unlike most other fighters.

I'd like to lie to you and say I'm good at it, but I pretty well just flail around. I know a handful of cool moves but I can't really adapt to the fight and pull them off on the fly. It's basically all or nothing. Still fun though and that's how you know a game is good: It's fun, even when the best you can manage is a drunken stumble into your opponent.

Well, when all else fails, doing some extremely cheap tap with your foot then backflipping away always works - Even against masters
