"The Best Game", "The Most Dissapointing" (etc), what's the point?

Everyone has their own definition of what's good and what's not in a game, so why do we have threads like "What's the best game out there?" when pretty much any game can qualify?

Usually to see if we share any common ground on the subject i`d imagine , in fact i don`t think there will ever be a unanimous "best game ever" simply because as you stated it`s very much subject to opinion

So the flames can be spread amongst us like flu between old people.

At a guess.

For the exact reason you stated, it could be anything people just want to find the common "best" among their peers. Well that's my view on it.

Its not like its impossible to have an intelligent discussion on the matter.

Because everyone in this world, has to have a view, its just human nature that we have to argue about what we think is fantastic, because someone else thinks its tripe. Heres an example: FALLOUT 3 IS SHITE

Free advertisement of our views, including the possibility of introducing a favored game to new players, or the endorphin boost of finding people who agree with us.

Also, Archer.

Archer is a badass.

OT: Because people love talking about their opinions.
And blatantly saying that my thing is better than yours is one of the most common ways to speak your opinion.

Because, some heretics believe that Jak and Daxter is not the best game evar.
Wow, a sudden rush of longing to play those games again has overwhelmed me. :(

OT: And as most have said, it's boring to all agree on one thing, and because of this, and originality, everyone's definitions vary greatly.

I would like to believe it's because people like to share what they enjoy and find people who also love what they do. But my cynical side says it's probably the OP looking for nice, shiny badges.

Because we all have different opinions, and we've all played different games, so it's interesting to hear what people think about, and it's kind of funny if it turns out there's an overwhelming consensus on a particular game being 'best' or 'most disappointing'.

Plus, it's a learning experience. I mean, if a lot of people agree that a particular game was 'good' or 'disappointing', then that feedback is good for the industry, right? I wouldn't get anywhere as a writer if people didn't criticise my work and tell me what they liked and what they didn't like. =P

To be honest, I couldn't care less about the whole badge system. I just logged on today, saw about 3 threads all along the lines of "Best/Greatest" and it got me wondering.

And the major point of this thread was, that I've been seeing a ton of "Best/Greatest" type threads, every 5 pages, there seems to be about 3 or so threads pertaining to that subject.

I meant the OPs of those "Best/Greatest" threads, not you, good sir. I say that mostly because, while said threads promote almost no discussion/debate, they get an inordinate amount of posts and views.

No worries, I can see how that could have been misconstrued. Welcome to The Escapist by the way, since everyone above me was too lazy to say so!

Thanks for you're welcome :)
I'm actually not a "newbie" though, had a different account 'RobotoWorks' that I created back in August '08, but I got tired of that screename.

Well... Most dissapointing game is by all means SPORE.
Or as I call it "That horribly disappointing dumbed down piece of shit for retarded kids with 6 fingers in every hand Spore". The hype for that game was building in me for many years and the videos from 2 years before release showed awesome intelligent fun! In the end it got dumbed down to a boring unpolished game that had no real idea's for gameplay (other that 2 or 3 on each stage) that's only fun parts were the creature creator and the very first stage (that got boring quickly). The game is an abomination to all it's hype and IMO is the greatest disappointment EVER.

For the best game... I'd say KOTOR2 :). It had all the things I loved in the first one only more. Around 10 times more. Longer storyline, more interesting characters and bigger locations. First one was great, the second was absolutely perfect.
