Mods are like cake. You can never have too much, and by the time you realize you can, it's probably far too late!

I play Left 4 Dead 2 quite a bit, but I could never abide the default weapon animations. Luckily, Arby26 made a set of much livelier animations to replace the robotic vanilla movements and a great number of weapon mods make use of them. Our very own Lt. Rocky himself has ported over quite a few crowd-pleasing models from games like PAYDAY 2 and Insurgency to the popular zombie cleanser.

I could rattle off names like DoktorHaus, tu stultus es, Prophet and MaxG3D, but I'd be going on for hours. And as for the wealth of mods for the Elder Scrolls and Fallout series...I don't think there's enough time in the day. But Millenia. Millenia, Millenia, Millenia. And CaBaL120. Also Vurt.

So, Escapists, I welcome you to name your favourite mods and modders for your video game of choice and tell us why you feel they're a cut above the rest. Or why you just like 'em.

From 2005 to 2007, I lived and breathed mods for Half-Life 1 and 2, maybe one or two for Doom 3.

For Half-Life 1, I think my favorite would be They Hunger, because it's the one I remember at the top of my head right now :p

For Half-Life 2, I think Black Mesa is hands down the pinnacle of what's possible for a mod that can even rival (maybe surpass) many AAA games.

For Doom 3, I'd say that The Dark Mod, but that one is stand alone and no longer requires Doom 3 to work, that might have been, hands down, the absolute best mod for Doom 3 and one of the best I've ever played. There also was Classic Doom wich is a remake of the first chapter of Doom, for Doom 3.

I watched a playthrough of They Hunger a few months ago. I was unaware of what an epic quest that mod was. I tried modding Doom 3 once and it was even harder than trying to get Fallout: New Vegas mods to play nice together. I never managed to do it in the end, since the files would keep resetting themselves from any changes I tried to make. A shame, because something like Sikkmod looked like it'd really spice up the game for new playthroughs.

Too many names to choose, I don't wanna miss anyone important, but I am very thankful for all of the glorious people behind the FreeSpace Source Code Project and its incredible campaigns and experiences.

A chap named ID0. He's Russian, AFAIK. And his mod "Massive Attack" for Far Cry is completely bonkers and awesome when it isn't crapping out due to technical issues. It mixes Metal Gear Solid and Aliens and Terminator and Silent Hill and System Shock 2 and even Doom and old SEGA racing games and then gives them clunky game design and a thick lashing of Russian-ness. I have pondered cleaning up the mod's subtitles and ironing out the gameplay clunk, but that would be a significant amount of work.

Forgive the lack of detail but I'm a little drunk and mind not working prop.

The big mod I love is the Mass Effect Happy Ending Mod from Mr. Fob http://www.nexusmods.com/masseffect3/mods/66/?.

While my preference is for John P's variation (http://www.nexusmods.com/masseffect3/mods/265/?) the original MEHEM gave me back the desire to play the desire to play ME3.

Add in the Extended Anderson Conversation http://www.nexusmods.com/masseffect3/mods/173/? also from John P and the ending is damn near fixed for me. You have to earn the everyone lives ending.

The Citadel Ending Mod from Deager http://www.nexusmods.com/masseffect3/mods/2/? tinkers with the dialogue so that the DLC is an actual epilogue to the game. Made versions so that you can have the changes affect the party only.

He's also made a new mod that shortens the 'dreams' (http://www.nexusmods.com/masseffect3/mods/362/?) and removes the kid from them and wipes the vent conversation. There are multiple versions of this too. So you could have the ven convo but have him in the dreams.

Really didn't think that mods that removed content would enhance a game for me.

I can't give a name for the creators since both have been major collaborative works, but without a doubt my two favorite mods have to be;

-Third Age: Total War for Medieval Total War 2, complete rework of the entire game into the Tolkien universe with every 'Major' faction (Gondor, Rohan, Isengard, High Elves, Silvan Elves, Mordor, Dale, Harad, Eriador and even Reborn Arnor) complete Middle Earth Map and scripted events, unique units, unique city maps accurate to the sites seen in the movies.

+Along with the Massive Overhaul Submod for Third Age, Adds factions and re-does the map to make the game much different, along with a massive number of scrips and other tweaks to improve gameplay.

+Just Third age will be a mind blowing experience for a Lord of the Rings fan who likes strategy games.

-Fallout mod for Darkest Hour, the Hearts of Iron 2 mod/stand alone game. Re does units, tech-tree, the entire map of North America and brings it all into line (for the most part) with the Fallout universe, has a multitude of lore specific starting factions and it's a fantastic play for a Fallout Fan who's also a Strategy gamer.

My good friend, Jeff. He made a survival realism mod for L4D/L4D2, that him and I used to play quite often. It was basically a difficulty level past Expert with some lighting tweaks to make the game darker and more challenging. He also had a randomizer mod which switched horde stats, so each playthrough was different, stronger hunter, weaker tank, etc.

I haven't got much experience in mods.
Yet the best one I have experienced was in Fallout 3 (I now have a habit of saying 4, hah).

It is called.
Mothership Zeta Crew.

What does it do?
Does it just add a crew on deck?
Does it possibly add missions?

Somewhat yes.
In fact, it turns the lackluster (my opinion) Mothership Zeta expansion into something HUGE!
It turns the whole mothership into a whole new faction (the Terran Starship Command), which gives the additions of new quests, rewards, locations, and best of all, you are in charge of it all. You create a giant faction that gathers power, and you feel you ARE in-charge.

Heck, you create a city.
At least in the most recent update you play.
I don't know what else they've done since then. Still, I love it because it creates a unique experience.

Unfortunately it is all non-canon. ;_;
Still, it reminds me of this song.

Durante is basically The Wolf from Pulp Fiction. If you've fucked your game up he comes along and fixes it :p

Cozur the guy who made and updates the Clash of Kings Mod for Mount and Blade: Warband is one of my favorite modders and one of my favorite mod.

The people who made the Game of Thrones mod for Crusader Kings II also earn my respect for making such an awesome mod.
