As someone with pretty low self esteem, any time I've stepped into a conversation involving my qualified techy mates and other people, and saved everyone an hour of confusion by simply explaining what they're on about in layman's terms.
I'm not an expert techy, but unlike them, I've retained the ability to talk to normal people about PCs in a way they can understand, and it's quite pleasing.
In a similar vein, I volunteered at an adult education place for a while, and there was a real pleasure in seeing an old dear of about 80 break thru the barriers of new technology and just 'get' how to send emails and use wordpad to write a short letter, and look things up online without fear.
I remember explaining the abstract concept of files and folders to the older generation wasn't easy, especially as to them, a file is something you put folders in, storing documents in the folder, then putting the folder in a file.
However, when I explained that folder structure is like a family tree, suddenly it makes sense to most people. C: is the grandfather, Program Files is the father, Betheseda is the son, Fallout 3 is the grandson, etc.
As the great Terry Pratchett once wrote, 'its a lie, but a useful lie that works, when the truth would just confuse people.' (or something like that.)
