I'd like to add that the "F" part of Graces F is really quite an upgrade compared to the original version so it's more than a port so I agree that it can be called an exclusive title.

Indeed. The f on the end of the title stands for the Future Arc, a.k.a. Lineage & Legacies. At the very least, 10+ hours worth of additional content(also, the Wii version never made it outside of Japan). That alone is why I call it PS3 exclusive. :p I was also gonna recommend Tales of Vesperia for PS3, but then I remembered how upset I am that there are no plans to localize the PS3 version. ._.
Seriously, WTF is going on with the Tales series? Or specifically the release of the series.

The 1st (next-gen) Tales game 'Tales of Vesperia'
- Released for the Xbox 360 world wide
- Improved rerelease for the PS3 Japan exclusive

The 2nd Tales game 'Tales of Graces'
- Released for the Wii Japan exclusive
- Improved rerelease for the PS3 world wide

The 3rd Tales game 'Tales of Xillia'
- Released for the PS3 world wide

The 4th Tales game 'Tales of Xillia 2'
- Released for the PS3 Japan only (for now)

Why is Vesperia first released for the Xbox 360 and then PS3 Japan exclusive while the rest got released on the PS3?
Why is Graces (first) released on the Wii?

It doesn't make sense. Stick with a platform dammit. >_<
Look more closely on the release schedules. Almost 1 year between North American release and European release of Vesperia, published by Atari in Europe and Namco Bandai everywhere else.

Tales of Symphonia Dawn of the New World European release is 1 year and 2 days after the North American release, but the European version got extra stuff to make up for the late release (not much though).

Being a European fan is horrible. I haven't played one installment that I didn't sink in and fall in love with, but every new game seems to have about a 30% chance of being translated and less than that to reach Europe.

The series is kinda a niche though so it makes sense that they're not always releasing their games outside of Japan. Tales of Vesperia on the 360 didn't sell enough copies for us to get the PS3 version (which has quite a few improvements). Tales of Graces for the Wii was a mess. It had so many bugs they recalled the discs and replaced them with new ones, it got a lot of bad press on this and thus never was released.

Because Bamco's being stupid. Probably not bothering to localize VesperiaPS3 because they released the original Vesperia on a console that isn't JRPG friendly and didn't sell so well. What bothers me more than their schizophrenic release schedule is their ABYSMAL localization speed. It should not take upwards of 2 years to localize a single title. >_> Japan got Xillia 2 BEFORE we even got Xillia 1. That's kinda ridiculous. If we're hoping to get Xillia 2, it won't be at least until halfway to 2015, if not in 2015.
Seriously, I hope we get Xillia 2 even though I kinda doubt it right now, however I always doubt that Tales games are being released. I care a little more about Xillia 2 than I usually do since it's a sequel to a game I will be playing.

While I am indeed hoping we get Xillia 2, I'm honestly not expecting much out of it. The guys doing Xillia 2 are the same guys behind Symphonia 2. Tales of Symphonia is my favorite Tales title, but I kinda really, really didn't like Symphonia 2.

Partly because Symphonia didn't need a sequel at all, to begin with. But also partly because it's...really not all that good. I hate the monster training bullshit they added in, constantly catching and fusing and training more and more monsters only so you can replace it yet again in about an hour. While all of the previous title's main characters are useable at one point or another, they're not at all worth using. I hated every voice they changed out, the shift in art direction didn't work and the story was less than interesting.

So I'm cautiously optimistic about Xillia 2, at best.

I actually liked Symphonia 2 quite a bit because of the strategies I was able to do by really looking at the kinds of monsters weighing which ones I should try to get. However I have played every generation of Pokemon and I am really looking forward to the 2 new games (Mystery Dungeon and X/Y) so it might just be that I am tainted by that. They tried something new and they didn't really hit their target, but I still love it. Voice actors rarely bother me so that has never been a problem.

Let's hope that they manage to make something that we'll both enjoy if they choose to give it to us or that it sucks hard if they don't release it here.

If you haven't played Kingdom Hearts or Final Fantasy X, those are going to be remastered in HD for PS3. Not exactly new or anything, but they are RPGs at least. Kingdom Hearts is supposed to come out fall of this year, so that's pretty close.
What I have read of Kingdom Hearts HD is that it includes the PSP games. That would be nice, because I haven't played the PSP games. I did play both PS2 games. Regardless, I'll be buying the HD rerelease.

Microsoft signed one hell of an exclusivity deal with Namco Bandai and even chipped in for the development of Vesperia, trouble was Vesperia sold quite poorly (although it's the best selling game on the 360). Namco ended up breaking the exclusivity deal with Microsoft and more then doubled their sales of the series even though it was a year old (granted with lots of extra content).

The Tales series was always a cult series in the states and has never seen the kindof success Namco wanted to see, thus they switched the focus away from the Xbox 360 and went with the PS3.

I believe MS paid Namco for Vesperia to be a timed-exclusive. It didn't sell well on the Xbox360, so they ported it to PS3, which sell more copies in Japan in one week than it did the entire year on 360. They did had plans to release it in the west--the English VA had confirmed that they were called back to record the extra lines--but they cancel it I guess due to the lack of demand of the genre at the time. I was pretty upset by this as well.

They released Graces on Wii because it was the best selling console.

The creators of Tales series had always said that the Tales series will be Japan first. They only released Graces F as water-testing, and decided to release Xillia after Graces F's sales had meet their quota.

I've got to hand it to Microsoft for trying so hard to get Japanese developers on board.

It's too bad it turned out so poorly.

Console sale figures shows that the Xbox 360 has sold better than the PS3, although there isn't that big a difference. I suppose the Xbox 360 is just very VERY unpopular in Japan, seeing as the game sold so much better on the PS3 (in Japan). The thing is, that doesn't explain why it sold poorly on the Xbox 360 in the US and Europe, where the Xbox 360 is just as popular as the PS3.

Cult series? Hmmm... if the Tales series is cult, that means pretty much all JRPG games are cult. As far as I know nothing has sold better than the Tales series, with the exception of Final Fantasy.

JRPG might very well be a niche genre.

Yeah, but the biggest issue is the Japanese publishers continue to want JRPGs to sell like GTA and Super Mario, it just doesn't happen and the big name publishers end up saying Americans don't want JRPGs. I'm more of a fan of the smaller publishers like NISAmerica, Atlus, and Aksys who have small releases, don't poor a crap load of money into a release, and end up releasing weird series that are hit or miss.

I remember when Catherine (not really JRPG but should be checked out) came out Atlus thought it would sell OK, but the series sold really well and surprised everyone.

I guess there's just not that big a fan base of this genre on the Xbox 360? I know someone started a petition to ask Square Enix to bring the Kingdom Hearts HD remakes to Xbox 360 as well. 4 months and so far only 80+ people signed...
