The MG42 was excellent in Brothers in Arms. As it was a machine gun, and NPC's in that game can take about as much as a normal person can(one bullet), it was awesome. I also liked the realistic muzzle flashes and the aesthetically pleasing noise it made. (a good gun always needs a good noise)

I'd have to say the TF2 sentry. How many turrets in any other game can instill fear and panic with just a simple beep?

Other than that I'd say the Portal turrets and the Laptop gun from Perfect Dark. Gotta love a concealable, automatic assault rifle (that looks like and operates like a laptop) that also doubles as a "place anywhere" sentry gun that shoots only enemy targets.

Ooooh yeah...

Gearbox got the sound effects RIGHT in that game. Turning my sub-woofer up to maximum bass and letting rip with the MG42 was pure awesome, not only that, but pants-wetting quality (especially in Earned in Blood) when you'd hear that thick `thhhdt` sound and then your screen is smeared in dirt and blood.

The giant artillery in Half Life 1. You only used it once or twice, but MAN that thing could mess some stuff up. The 50 cal wasn't bad wither.

I like the turrets from Tribes: Aerial Assult were very very useful. You can't man them like other games, but you can place small ones in random spots to surprise your opponents.

The best turret is the Dispenser!!

But seriously, the best turret was in either Jak 2 or Hellgate: London.

Actually if you park a Heavy next to it you get a self healing turret with unlimited ammo and it's unsappable.

IMO best turret experience ever was in CoD4, where you man the turrets of an Lockheed AC-130 gunship. made me feel like a god hanging up in the sky, raining merciless doom down upon my enemies.

other than that I would say the auto-turret from AvP2 was great, if only because it ran out of ammo meaning you couldn't camp behind it until everything was dead

I liked the turrets in Alien Shooter, your surrounded by enemies but by jumping in a turret not only do you get enough firepower to rip your once powerful foes to shreds, you get a huge health boost.

Unsappable, maybe... Maybe... I've yet to meet one that can outsmart a butterfly knife.

I preferred them in the original Tribes. It was satisfying to work out precisely *where* you could place turrets in a room so that they gave maximum output and minimal "You can't place that here" due to being too close to other turrets. And then annoying the hell out of your enemy with a few dozen beacons and sensors that they noticed before the turrets started wailing on them.

And that's before they notice the mines and grenades. Oh, and my guns as well.

Easily my most satisfying turret experience was in Star Wars: Republic Commando. Your objective: Clear a huge hangar on a ship of about a dozen droid dispensers, all continuously spewing battle droids of all types. Your operator says he's bringing you some "ordnance". This turns out to be nothing other than a walker (like the ones the clone army used in Episode 2). You can't move it, so it counts as a turret, and you just get on the main gun and blast the living crap out of everything that moves with its giant gun. Immensely satisfying.

Additionally, I like most of the turret options available in CoD4. The grenade launcher turret you get on the helicopter level is probably my favorite.

Portal turrets are the best. They sound so scared and on edge. "Hello?" "Are you still there?"

And I love it when you knock them over. "Wahaghaharg!" Good times.
They're the best ones! Go on youtube and search 'Day in the life of a Portal turret. Best thing I've ever seen on the net.
