Well, focus on all the factors in the war, like the economic strength of wheat vs cotton
The futility of the emancipation proclamation (interesting fact, the original copy was burned in the great chicago fire)
The importance of kentucky
Sherman's march to the sea
Rewards for enlistment
Ways to avoid drafts
etc.

Music that doesn't have words in background.

Other than that it totally depends on the subject/person, but I can't work with worded music as it distracts me.

Keep in mind that my major was biochem and my minor was physics so what I know of history is limited.

That being said, I've always found it good, when attempting to memorize things, to wave my hands around, as if I was building a structure of sorts. I put the one concept in the centre and place others around it. When I'm taking the exam, my hands go to those positions and I can recall what I was studying. Having a bit to drink is fine too, it will give you a "pick me up" sort of mentality. I recommend wine.

The first thing you should do is turn off your wireless card.
If you want to study simple facts (like what happened at a certain date) write the date on a card and the answer on the back. Than look at the dates and check your answer. Right answers leave the deck wrong ones stay in. If you're through the deck shuffle and repeat until you have no more cards left.
