I plan on going to gamestop later to get either Dragon Age origins or Mass Effect 2 (both for ps3) and wanted to know which is better? iv heard alot of complaints about ME2 being heavily streamlined/dumbed-down but is that really an issue?
*Note:I have never played a dragon age or Mass effect game before, but i do know the basic mechanics.

Dragon Age Origins. Mass Effect was superior to DA:O but ME 2 is just a FPS basically. The NPCs are there and some are cool but in DA:O are much more defined and have way more lines.

I didn't play them on PS3 (I'm mostly a PC gamer) so I can only express it from that point of view but I really couldn't call ME2 an RPG (which is what you wanted). (I may be lynched for this opinion however)

I would be scared to see how dragon age would play on the ps3 to be honest.

Apparently the console ports are all inferior. It's likely to play well, but it's also likely to lack depth.

I doubt that would be the case with mass effect 2 though.

I will admit you should pick the one that appeals to you more.

It deppends on what you're after, yes Mass Effect 2 is dumbed down compared to the first game but since your on PS3 and can't play the first then it shouldn't be that noticable to you. But if you really don't like the idea of it being dumbed down you should go for Dragon Age, otherwise go for Mass Effect, as good as Dragon Age is Mass Effect 2 is better.

You don't start watching Star Wars at Empire Strikes Back. Play ME1 first.

ME2 may be dumbed down but all the changes are for the better resulting in a vastly superior game to ME1.

IMO ME2 > DAO > ME1

EDIT: Oh, I didn't see it was for PS3. In that case, get ME2 as it's a much better experience than DAO

mass effect2 for me its a shooter it is linear but it has a lot of replayability and the story is great
i tried dragon age and its all rpg ( I'm not fond of rpgs) its not as fluid u can pause the screen and u have 3-4 sidekicks to help you and u can order them around its more like strategy :)
but the story is longer so if u want longer play time its dragon age but if u want the story shooter than mass effect your choice

This is true to an extent, though I played as an adept and shot my gun about 10 times in total throughout the game, so if you're determined enough you can basically play it as if it were turn-based.

As for the question, I prefered ME2. This may have been due to playing it directly after ME1 and my mind lumping the two experiences together, but I thought ME2 had much better pacing than DA:O regardless of that.

The better RPG is Dragon Age Origins. By far.

Mass Effect 2 is a third person cover-based shooter with leveling.

DAO however was a pure rpg, much bettter for replay value.
Wait what? You can say a lot about Dragon Age but the replay value is almost zero. Who the hell wants to go through the Deep Roads more than once?

someone who enjoys the combat and the overall story of the game?

OT: well if you prefer a somewhat more classic approach to rpg's,(such as hit die and customizing, and tell your guys WHAT to do, not physically hacking and slashing) then go with dragon age, personally i have played it on every system and besides hotkeyying and the super isometric camera there is LITTLE DIFFERENCE to the overall enjoyment of the game on the console.

however mass effect 2 (haven't played the ps3 version) is a great third person light rpg, so if you aren't super huge into rpg's i would recommend me2 first, although DAO is still a very solid game to get for anyone.

There were sections I hated in the game, the deep roads andthe fade. But it was fun playing a DW rogue, archer, warrior and mage. Unlike ME2 where it was always duck behind cover and shoot. ME2 gameplay wise was a gears clone, and lets face it aside from paragon/renegade there is no reason to playthrough it again, unless you like doing the exact same thing again and again.
You can mix it up, you know. I quite liked the ME2 combat, but that's beside the point. You cannot deny a lot of the game was spent killing the same two mobs over and over again. It's not that different to what you think about ME2. Personal preference, it seems.

*raises hand* I went through the Dark Roads more than once...three times in fact. I very nearly went as insane as its inhabitants and only made it out due to copious amounts of alcohol.

Still better than ME2 though...

I would recommend DA:eek: but that is just personal preference, because the gameplay is more enjoyable than ME.

i will agree to this, the gameplay needs to vary a bit more i think, especially depending on what class you pick, so between that and having maybe a few more choices here and there depending on your class/moral choices, the game could have been better for re playability.
