Nah, no lynching, Darth. That's what I was trying to say, too. ME2 is a great game, good story, good cinematics. And I would say you've got control over aspects of the storyline. But it is most certainly not a traditional videogame RPG.

Dragon Age Origins. Mass Effect was superior to DA:O but ME 2 is just a FPS basically. The NPCs are there and some are cool but in DA:O are much more defined and have way more lines.

I didn't play them on PS3 (I'm mostly a PC gamer) so I can only express it from that point of view but I really couldn't call ME2 an RPG (which is what you wanted). (I may be lynched for this opinion however)
DAO however was a pure rpg, much bettter for replay value.
Wait what? You can say a lot about Dragon Age but the replay value is almost zero. Who the hell wants to go through the Deep Roads more than once?
There were sections I hated in the game, the deep roads andthe fade. But it was fun playing a DW rogue, archer, warrior and mage. Unlike ME2 where it was always duck behind cover and shoot. ME2 gameplay wise was a gears clone, and lets face it aside from paragon/renegade there is no reason to playthrough it again, unless you like doing the exact same thing again and again.
i will agree to this, the gameplay needs to vary a bit more i think, especially depending on what class you pick, so between that and having maybe a few more choices here and there depending on your class/moral choices, the game could have been better for re playability.
Moral choices dont matter in ME. Mainly ecause the devs decided to make everything black and white. Or Red and blue. And add they neverpunish paragons. And the punishment for renegade in 2 was looking like the terminator, and thats just the start. Thats another great thing about DAO they grey choices. look at horrowmont and Behlen for example.
yeah somewhat, but i dont think thats necessarily a horrible thing. (talking about your first sentence) they should have punished paragons a few times at least, like for being too noble the bad guy would get away or you wouldn't get the best gun or something.
You haven't played Bring Down the Sky?

Also, people are totally wrong when they say that Paragon and Renegade are Good and Evil, respectively. It's more like Fair and Merciful or Dirty Harry.

Get ME2. DA:O on the console is kinda' shit.
Not really. Maybe it isn't to your liking, but I've played the 360 and pc version and prefer the former.
thats actually one of 2 DLC's that i have not played.

and i will agree to that, renegade i would actually agree with occasionally, being the panzy paragon sometimes just doesn't cut it when your supposed to be the most badass commander in the universe.

Both games are pretty equal in the fun department. But if you want more bang for your buck, buy the Ultimate Dragon Age Edition. And before you decide ask yourself "What do I like more?". Fantasy or Sci-Fi?, Dragons or Aliens?, Swords or Guns?

PS: If you play it smooth, ME2 offers Strahovsky boobage.

If you haven't played ME1, then don't bother with ME2. I really loved ME1 and 2, and DA:O, but I probably prefer the ME series as a whole. That being said, it would be like watching/reading The Two Towers without having any previous experience with The Fellowship of the Ring. Get DA:O. It's a great game.

Mass Effect 2 is dumbed down compared to the first game
Really? Cuz I remember the first game had infinite ammo, pointless side-quests ("Boom Boom! I done shot him with mah truck!") and the worst inventory I have ever seen. Not to mention everyone had to carry that standard 4-pack of weapons.

"Liara, can you use an assault rifle?"
"No, I..."
"Shut the f**k up and carry this sh*t."

C'mon, the game is light years ahead of its predecessor. I'm not saying things haven't been streamlined, but that first one pales in comparison. And between DA:O and ME2... just the sheer look and sound of your custom Shepard in conversations vs the blank Dragon Age stare isn't even a contest. To say nothing of the ship upgrades, flying around exploring, etc. Dragon Age was pretty rough gameplay wise. I loved it, got lost in the story, but compared to their past work it was a bit bland.

Jade Empire.

...

Oh, wait. Out of those two? If you were around and playing in the Baldur's Gate era, go for Dragon Age. Otherwise, go for Mass Effect.

Both games are good. Both games have their negative points.

I guess I would say Dragon Age simply because you can get it cheaper right now and then get Mass Effect 2 in the future as both are worth playing.

Dragon Age is highly overated..

Mass Effect 2 on the other hand is much better than I thought and warrants the praise and high ratings it gets.

Dragon Age is a traditional RPG through and through. Swords, magic, dragons, etc. It has a lot to offer, but it may take a little while to get hooked. Took me a few hours anyway.

Mass Effect 2 is more of an action RPG, which is a lot more popular. You really don't need to play the first Mass Effect to enjoy ME2, it's just a nice bonus. And it's still being supported (there will be DLC in the future).

If it makes any difference, ME2 is significantly shorter than DA. For instance DA:O should give you 40-60 hours if you complete all of the side quests, and ME2 maybe you can get 30 hours out of.

It depends on what you're looking for, if you want a great fantasy game with alot of content and options for making a unique character go Dragon Age. Both games are well written, fun and relatively easy to get into but Dragon Age simply has more content (not counting DLC)

Depend on do you like the traditional RPG element (character progession)?
If yes Dragon ago.

Mass Effect 2 isn't a traditional RPG anymore.

Yes, I used the term "traditional" RPG just to avoid those fan boy jump to defend that ME2 is still a RPG...

Also if you hate bug go with Mass Effect 2, Dragon ago is fulled of them.

EDIT: If you go with Dragon Ago, get the PC version. There are mods that can fix many bugs which bioware didn't patch (quite a lot). Also PC version allow isomatic view which is a lot better than 1st Person view for this game.

Personally, I liked Mass Effect 2 better, but they're both great games. However, since you haven't played Mass Effect yet, I'd recommend getting Origins. You can play Mass Effect 2 without having played the first one, but it'll spoil it. Also, Origins is a more traditional RPG. So my recommendation is get Origins first, then Mass Effect 1 & 2 later.

I plan on going to gamestop later to get either Dragon Age origins or Mass Effect 2 (both for ps3) and wanted to know which is better? iv heard alot of complaints about ME2 being heavily streamlined/dumbed-down but is that really an issue?
*Note:I have never played a dragon age or Mass effect game before, but i do know the basic mechanics.
If you like slower, tactics-based RPGs then go Dragon Age. If you've played Baldur's Gate I or II then it plays like those.

If you want an action-rpg that relies less on tactics, more on reaction time then get ME:2

Both are great games but i have to say Mass Effect 2. My reason being that you plan to play on ps3... to put it a good way i did truly enjoy the depth of Dragon Age and compared to Mass Effect, i say Dragon Age is the better rpg (not better game, i can't decide over all), but a true rpg like Dragon Age is made for computer not console, the limitations of console took a lot away form the experience, Mass Effect was made for console so there is nothing holding it back on the ps3.

Too bad Baldurs Gate doesnt come on PS3. On PC DA:O was far more enjoyable but i've heard very little positive about it on console (i run out of keys for the abilities on a keyboard and am terrified how frustrating it could be with a controller).

Mass Effect 2 has an absolutely stupid plot but its irrelevent considering how absolutley fantastic the side characters are, they manage to actually cover up the bad plot. Though its a boring shooter combat with near to zero customization but you do actually get to make some choices. Mass Effect 2 really isnt much of an RPG but still a good game to be honest.

I would rather be punched in the stomach than play Dragon Age on a console.
Get ME2.

I would just like to point out, no it doesnt play like BG at all. The only similiarity is being able to pause.

On the PS3? Neither, seriously.

DA only plays properly on the PC.

ME2 without playing ME1 first is a poor choice.
If you're going to try the storyfag experience, atleast start at the beginning. When you miss out on the story, what's left is a half decent Third person shooter.

Play something else instead. There has to be something worthwhile on the PS3.
