I'm not giving up masturbating....-_-

I can't stop drinking soda. I down on average like 5 to 7 cans a day. It's not making me fat but it's destroying my teeth, the gum line on my front teeth have almost disappeared completely and I will probably lose all my front teeth in like 20 years or so. I realize soda drinking isn't as addictive as other things but for some reason I just can't stop.
I had this exact same thing (and I dread going to the dentist)

for me I had to [i/]make myself not want it anymore[/i] if youre sitting there, craving, feeling irritated wanting nothing more than to open a can then you will fail, you have to change it at the psychoglocal level

it was energy drinks, I don't drink coffee so to get my caffine hit I replaced it with a No-doze and ice tea that I made myself (which I somtime add a juice which isn't really that great but I guess its still less than a can since its "watered down" normal Ice tea drinks are also packed with sugar) Ice tea is a good substitue for when you want a drink thats flavoured but not a juice (juice isn't always that great for you anyway)

There were studies that suggested masturbation helped prevent things like prostate cancer.

I dont know if they're founded in anyway, but its good enough for me - I aint risking it.
Lucky me! But seriously, blue balls are good for no one. Unless you spend more than half the day with your hands down your pants, I don't really see this as an issue.

OT: Coca Cola and snacks in general. It's come to a point where I just can't watch a movie without something to nibble. Maybe if I was still in my teens this wouldn't matter too much, but I'm already 31 - I can't just recklessly snack to my hearts content anymore. Easier said than done though.
Apparently direct stimulation/massage of the prostate can also help reduce the chances of prostate cancer later in life. The thing I read suggested once per week, I'll see if I can find it for you. At the very least its a good way to find out if your girlfriend is into anything she hasn't mentioned.

OT:

I'm going to mark myself down for food as well. I certainly have other vices, but despite my two to three very large very strong cups of coffee a day, I had zero problems quitting cold turkey.

The munchies on the other had are a whole different deal. Based on my decision to start dieting I actually have zero problems dropping about 1000 calories a day - as in, the hunger doesn't bother me at all. What bothers me is the fact that I'm not eating, and I actually catch myself standing and pacing or walking to the kitchen only to walk through and sit back down without getting anything even when I know for a fact there is nothing snackable in the kitchen.

And this is a full year and sixty pounds after starting my diet. I still do this and it can get as bad as me wandering several blocks to a store just to have a nibble on whatever they sell that counts as edible. I mean, yeah I've lost weight, but if I can't kick this other thing then its not going to stay gone for long.

Good job on staying off the smokes, OP. If you find the cravings are too rough, a friend of mine had success with e-cigs as a quitting aid.

I never used to drink soft drinks at all until I moved in with my current housemates, who have an almost fetishistic appreciation of the stuff. We've been known to drive miles away just to get a 'soda coke' which is totally different to the canned/bottled version. Whilst obviously the ideal would be that you are able to cut down on your consumption, I do remember reading somewhere that drinking through a straw rather than directly out of the beverage container can greatly reduce the negative dental impact.

I have a confirmed potato chip addiction and have overcome a bout of alcoholism. It's nearly June and I haven't had a sip since December 31st. Going for the year!

I'm addicted to making new tabs. I often get to over 300 or 400 before my computer pulls a restart on me and loses it anyway. Solution: switched to Chrome temporarily, and it becomes a real fucking ordeal to have more than about 50 because the pictures telling you what they are vanish from the top. But in all seriousness, put me in the porn camp. I haven't had reason to lay off so far but reading this thread I might just to see what happens. Also apples, like 2 a day or more. It's real silly.

Better than all of your teeth.

It does help to sneak it past. What also helps is swishing some water in your mouth right after to move some of the sugar and acid away.

Actually, it is a really serious problem.

$4000 in dentist's fees later (And I HAVE a dental plan from work. It's dry.) I'm still drinking the shit. Mind you, I'm not my teenage myself, making coke-can pyramids on my desk anymore, but I limit myself now. I don't want to be the guy to tell you your business. Because I have no business in telling you this, but...

If you can stop. Work to stop.

Replace it with water. Drinking juice or tea helped me when it comes to having a need for something flavored.
If your like me, always reaching for a drink at the computer desk, get a water bottle at your desk and just use filtered water.

Also, if you're looking for incentive to stop drinking pop, down a can, chug that ************ seconds before you hop in bed and sleep. Tell me how the morning goes.

Feels like a hangover, dunnit? That's because it is one. Pop simply suppresses your thirst. There is absolutely nothing in there to hydrate you.

There are two types of addictions. Just because there's no physical dependency on pop, doesn't make that mental dependency, or habit any less of a danger.
I did that, though I managed to avoid the dentistry expenses.

I used to drink 3 liters of soda a day, five days a week. I switched to water almost overnight. Suddenly my guts unknotted and I realized I had gotten so used to feeling rotten I had stopped noticing.

I still drink soda but now it takes a week to finish a 2-liter bottle. Doesn't make me feel bad anymore. It's quantity that kills.

Im trying to stop too. Ive had a really tickley cough for a few weeks (brought on by a cold). It was made a lot worse by the fact that I smoke so Ive decided that Im gonna quit. Instead of shitting myself every time I get a cough that lasts over a fortnight id rather quit

Its hard. Ive found the worst times are tea breaks at work (which I usually have a chocolate bar instead) and drinking. Drinking is the achilles heel to anyone wanting to quit. Every time ive tried quiting (two weeks personal best) ive ended up giving in while on the sauce

Speaking of drinking. I wouldnt say I was addicted (dont touch it mid week) but its a routine part of my weekend to go into town and get hammered

Yeah, most of my efforts have been foiled by being intoxicated in some manner or other... I don't know what it is, but being drunk just turns cigarettes into little tubes of crack on the satisfaction front. I've just kind of accepted that drunk fags will always be a thing, I guess the important part is making sure I don't have a few the next day to carry me through the hangover and just let things slide from there (like they always do!)...
