I do watch it, mostly to see how blown out of proportion they can make geek culture, and partly because there are a few funny bits.

and Raj is adorable. :V Poor guy.

Not sure how it got this popular though, it was probably sometime after they started introducing catchphrases, like "Bazinga".

What do people expect, it's a sitcom, it's supposed to portray arche types. And it's not supposed to have a deep involving storyline it's supposed to bring us everyday life jokes, in a geeky setting.

I think it's refreshing to see a show in which "nerds" and "geeks" have normal lives and still do the geeky things they enjoy doing. And most of the time it's regularly funny.

People how say "the facts are wrong" and "the jokes are dumb" should get the stick out of their arse and appreciate it for what it is, a sitcom. If you want exact science you go to an educational institute. If you want to smirk at people dressing as flash, while eating in front of the TV you watch a sitcom.

I don't dislike it, I just find it so boring myself, but I think that may be partly because I don't usually like American comedies. There are a few good ones though.

I do hear lots of good feedback for the show, but it's not for me either.

I don't really like it, but my brother loves it, and it gets repeated a lot on E4 in the UK. Mind you, as far as I know The big bang theory doesn't get repeated nearly as much as Friends did when that was on E4, but I am guessing that it will only be a matter of time. Then I think The big bang theory will go from "barely tolerable" to "absolutely insufferable" in my book.

I'm amazed at how many people here don't like it, go anywhere else on the internet and you can't click more than 5 pages without a reference and some fans happily discussing the events of the latest episode.

I personally don't like the show but not to the degree that I'll complain when someone sticks it on. (Unlike Family Guy/American Dad/etc., I'll complain like fuck if those come on because they're just awful)

I adore the IT Crowd. I particularly adore Moss (who doesn't?!). But... 'credible'? Really? Do you actually know people who'd do this?

OK, Moss tends to go over the top a bit. Only a bit though. I do know people that come very close for all of the main characters.

I HATE The Big Bang Theory. It is the worst sitcom i have ever seen and stereotypes nerds/geeks/whatever you want to call them to the extreme.

Its nerd humour for people who find nerds funny. Every "nerdy" joke is completely on the nose and always cringe worthy, pretty muich all of them can be summed up with
*Sheldon says something complex and scientific*
*everyone laughs*
*other characters fail to understand*
*everyone laughs*

What I hate is that now people think of themselves as nerdy for watching the show and then take quotes from Star Wars which they got from the show and dont even understand. I cant tell you how many times I've said "Its a trap" and someone gone "ohho, I love the Big Bang theory"

Fucking hate that show.

It paints a picture of nerds using stereotypes. There's not anything wrong with that at heart, but I'd say it's very un-creative and uninspiring. It's not well done humor, I can understand why people would laugh at it though....Unfortunately.

It's not retarded, otherwise it wouldn't be popular.

TBBT is watchable, but I hate shows with background laughter
What's up with that in sitcoms?
If I wanted to hear people laughing I would download some comedy (screened in filled theater)
I want to hear the show itself, not some generic crowd laughing.

I think you'd be surprised at what passes for humor these days. To put it frankly, yes I do think there are some people who would be entertained by a jumble of words.

Yes, some people. But not most fans of tv series. What many in this thread seem to say.

No way to be sure. My sole point is, popularity does not mean something is good. It means gathers attention and gets widespread appeal maybe. It's like the old saying: "If everyone jumped off the Brooklyn bridge would you?"

We earned the right to be nerdy. We fought for that. Now hipsters are taking it away while at the same time failing to relate to us. Many people blame shows like Big Bang for this.

Now that's just silly.
We "earned" the "right" to be nerdy by BEING NERDY. We learned the shows, we know the references and how accurate they are because we delve deep into what we love and we embrace it. You can't just fake being nerdy. You can adopt it and become a nerd yourself, but you can't just dress up in glasses and suddenly BE a nerd. You don't have the passion or the knowledge. It can't work.

Nobody should be MAD that people are trying to fit into their group. In fact, those who ARE are pure and simple, HIPSTERS. That is the hipster way, after all. They complain because what they love is now being "taken over" and they see themselves as better, as TRUE fans or whatever they are. They might have devoted more to it, they might have had to work harder to gain their position, the ones "taking over" might have it super easy compared to them, but being angry that more people are taking interest in your group just seems silly.

Popularity does not mean something is great, you mean.

It HAS to be good to be popular. People do not like bad things.

Good and Bad are subjective, even ignoring that, history would disagree with you many times. VHS vs Beta Max, Beta Max was far superior but VHS won out cause it was advertised better and the public ate it up. I don't even need to touch the third Reich on this one.

It's all how people see things.

So because some things can be better, other things cannot be good?

I'm not arguing good and bad. I'm arguing that the public can be wrong.

But the definition "wrong" is of course subjective.
If people like TBBT and reciprocally enjoy it. I can't really question that. But I'm allowed to refute the idea that its popularity means it is "good." Because to me it is not.
