okay... so... can you then explain to me why in the trailer (the full pre-rendered) DC-universe online, on the "Lex Luther side", why is "Cap-Marvel (the DC one, of course)" on the bad guy's side? because I AM SOOOOO SURE that B4 the "NUKE BOOM", he said "SAHZAM" then "BOOM" it went... WHO WAS THAT ONE? it can't be the "kid" could it?

Nice informative episode by the way...
That was Black Adam, a DC villain/occasional anti-hero who shares his powersource and magic word.

It makes sense, though, that Marvel Comics would be the one owning the trademark to Captain Marvel. On the other hand, DC's Captain Marvel (in my opinion the REAL Cap) deserves more attention among comic book fans than he does.

For more reading about Capt. Marvel, here are some good stories he's in:
-52: Where Marvel makes several guest appearences with one of his villians, Black Adam, who's one of the stars of 52
-Shazam!: Monster Society of Evil
-Kingdom Come: Where the Capt gets brainwashed and made into a pawn of Lex Luthor; also a great story in and of itself, and it occurs in an Elseworlds universe, so there's no continuity to sift through

Bob. I'm going to stop watching your shorts if you keep filling my mind with UTTERLY useless information. Seriously. I've probably unlearned something important to make room for that shite.

Alright Bob, I appreciate these episodes and realize this is your soapbox but... Could we step out of the Comic Book store for a bit?
Honestly I love Bob's opinions on Pop-Culture, Comics, and ESPECIALLY Movies, but when he tends to veer away from those things to talk about politics and surprisingly even videogames, he gets biased and tends to forget the difference between opinion and fact. Kinda like Dennis Leary. At one point his comedy was dark and edgy, now he just kinda sounds like a cranky old man, and it's disappointing and kinda embarrassing for me to call myself one of his fans.

I like Bob, and his COMICS ARE WEIRD episodes. IMHO they keep him from becoming the Glen Beck of Escapist ;)

Great Stuff as usual Bob. I REALLY enjoy your "comics are weird" videos. I really enjoy reading comics, but it starts getting really convoluted when i start straying from the only hero i truly know, Spider-man. Its hard trying to get into other heroes for me and especially hero team ups because of back story. You make it simple, to the point and entertaining, with your wit.

Oh and do a Ms. Marvel one. I read some of her newer comics (2 year old comics are newer to me lol), and i like the character, But Her back story escapes me.

Good list, though I'd also want to add Superman/Shazam: First Thunder to that. IMO Billy's at his most interesting when he's interacting with other heroes, especially Superman.

Is Marvel REALLY so desperate to keep the trademarks to "Captain Marvel" that they're willing to make up stories that no one cares about just to keep the name?

Either way, DC's Captain Marvel seems WAY better, and has a much more awesome costume!
One imagines its more about preventing their competitor from making more money: When "Captain Marvel" was being published AS "Captain Marvel," he was THE superhero - bigger than Superman, bigger than everyone. And whenever DC guest-stars him now on a cartoon or comic, he gets a HUGE spike in interest among young kids especially... but it never lasts because you can't market toys or other merch all that well when your not allowed to put the characters' NAMES on the label.

Can you stop doing the "X IS WEEEEEEIRD!"
Everything's wierd when it has a complicated backstory to it, not just geeky stuff.
Drafts/Trading for professional athletes are weird.
Politics is weird.
Hell the theory of gravity is weird.
Point is, if everything's weird, doesnt that kinda make it normal.
Something being straight forward and easy to understand IS WEIRD!

Last I checked, Noh-Varr is Marvel's current Captain Marvel. I may be wrong, I haven't been keeping up with The Avengers.

So it's less about the actual characters than it is about sticking it to their competitor, is that it? That's kind of lame.

Funnily enough, I heard about Mar-vell before I heard about Captain Marvel o_O Bet there ain't many others. I'm a total Marvel fanboy though >_>

Also: You like comics... We get it |:| Howzabout some other stuff? Though, it would be cool for the Escapist to have an entire series just for comics. /Shrug

I've vaguely heard of the legal shenanigans between Marvel and DC about the Captains Marvel, so it was nice having it explained out. Though the only Captain Marvel of DC I've experienced was in Kingdom Come, and that was awesome. As for the Marvel Captain Marvel, I had the pleasure of reading Nextwave, which featured the Monica Rambeau incarnation. And it was awesome.

Good episode Bob. These comic episodes are really informative.

As much as i really, really do not care for comic books or comic book superheroes, i've actually grown to like these "big picture" episodes that delves into this world of trademarks and judicial cock-ups that result in absurdities and oddities in the publishing industry. In fact, i enjoy these 'comics are weird' episodes far more than when you try to provide subjective, biased viewpoints on hot topics and controversial issues and claim it to be seeing "the big picture" because delving into history is something that can only be done objectively, with few exceptions where you'll say you may personally prefer one franchise over another, but any such biases are minuscule at best, perhaps even only hinted at and not ruminated upon.

Teal deer says: Good stuff, i enjoyed the video, thank you.

Nice one!
The Comics are Weirdddd are my favorites so far :)

How popular is that Shazam version at the moment btw?
Still going strong?

Dang, now I have to spend a lot of time on wiki's, because once you start reading this stuff, you can't stop (just like with tvtropes.com!)

I've always liked Captain Marvel. The fact that his secret identity is a child is a stroke of genius given the early comic readership, great way to connect to the fans.
Plus, it doesn't hurt that "Shazam: The Monster Society of Evil" is awesome.

I have to disagree there, I find the Marvel "Captain Marvel" far more engaging and interesting than the DC "Captain Marvel". There are fans of the Marvel version as well, mainly those who read Thunderbolts or who came to know Knoh-Var in the Dark Avengers arc.

As for "Shazam"? Well, like DC do with most of their characters, he's been pushed to the sidelines, and overshadowed by whatever characters are flavour of the week. He makes the obligatory back ground appearance, but his own books aren't remarkably popular. Both are good characters, but Marvels one lead to greater, better things.

People do care about it. Bob obviously doesn't get into the character, but the Marvel version has a bigger following than Bob give him credit for. Also, I'd say that because he's a smaller character, the Marvel writers are more creative, and make better skylines for him, whereas the DC version... well, like I said DC overshadow many of their characters with the more popular at the time characters. Both Marvels are great characters though.

Captain Marvel, meet Captain Marvel.

Watch Video
Happy the Marvel Bunny?

I assume that is where they got the idea for "Mr. Snickerdoo" in that ultra campy "Adventures of Mr. Incrediable" short cartoon in the "Incrediable's" DVD.
