Great topic, but I'm surprised it conjured up his Boston-ness.

As a native New Hampshirite I am now unfortunately legally required to make a joke "wherein the behavior of Boston Drivers is criticized in a most amusing fashion." So um . . . man, I'm certainly not going to discuss the state of SyFy's lineup while MovieBob's at the wheel! I bet Roddenberry and Asimov are glad they consulted on the channel's foundation!

(I would have done the whole dropping Rs New Hampshire thing but I have no idea how to do that with "Roddenberry.")

See, this is a classic example of being confused by something and not caring enough to do the research for it. 90% of the audience doesn't realize that Bob is from Boston, despite him having mentioned it a few times both in his Escapist works and in the Game Overthinker.

The one thing I do hope is that if Power Girl is ever to be reintroduced into this new DCU, it won't be the same way as her DC Animated counterpart from Justice League: Unlimited, "Galatea" (aka, River Song before River Song, and 2-dimensional psycho-*****).

I completely disagree. It might be just me, but I hate getting into the middle of a story. I wouldn't start reading RingWorld at chapter 27, and he speaks of people getting into the middle of the story all the time, I rarely, if ever, do that. Because once they mention something that happened in a previous issue, I think the book resents me for not knowing about it.

A Soap reference? Hell YEAH! Man, I thought I was like the only one who'd ever heard of that show. No, of course that's not true. But yeah - so many shows let you get into it without having to know the whole story, although I kinda disagree with his assessment of Lost... How the hell would you have ever gotten into that without seeing the first season?

Damn you DC and Marvel. Why cant you just end a story and start up with some new characters? For the love of all that's holy, let's get something new or maybe even, god forbid, original.

See, I was going to post asking if he's speaking differently (or if I've just lost my mind), but I see that's the main thing of pretty much every other post, so I'm good.

I only read the Teen Titans comics. The problem for me is that those comics tend to branch off into other comics. Storylines started in Teen Titans are concluded in completely other books. Example: I STILL don't know if the guy who killed Kid Eternity, Wendy's dad, has been dealt with. I read online that Wendy and Oracle bring him down, but how am I supposed to find that? There's also the fact that the Titans never mention that fact that Kid has been murdered. It's like they don't even realize he's missing. Another favorite: Superboy is suddenly back from the dead, and instead of Wonder Girl freaking out, "Connor! My God, you're alive?!" she gives him the cold shoulder. Clearly she already knew he was alive, but he must have come back in a different book, outside of the Titans, and therefore I'm completely lost.
It drives me nuts when that happens, and it seems to happen a lot because the team in constantly shifting. I'm hoping that with this reboot, they'll stop doing that and try to keep the majority of storylines (I realize sometimes things need to cross) in the comics that originally started them.

Stop talking about the Noble Boston Accent of Movie Bob, or I will subject you all to my Saskatchewan accent.

No one wants that.

As to Bob's point-- well, we've reached a point where the hardcore fans of comics have grown so insular, I think we may NEED advertising. DONE WELL.

I don't think the whole "coming in at the middle" thing is quite so simple. Some comics (tv shows, series of novels, etc.) are set up to be friendlier to new readers than others; some are friendlier to new readers at the cost of being tedious exposition-fests on a regular basis, though it doesn't happen quite as often as it used to on the comics page, near as I can tell.

Not long ago I watched the entirety of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" with some friends over the course of about a year, and I can say with some certainty that while yes, I probably could have dropped in at any point, it would have been a far more confusing and less rewarding experience. Even if I was looking up plot points on the Internet after every show.

As far as the accent goes (because apparently we must mention it), I suspect it's just a matter of Bob trying to cram the subject within the five minutes. Focusing on speed takes its toll on your concentration, sometimes.

I personally can't stand getting into a story half way through. Hell I won't even watch an episode of a tv show I'm follow if I missed that start of the episode.

I was looking at reading some Avengers to get some background for the movie and was overwhelmed. Which series to choose, which storyline, do I read the individual characters comics, or just the groups etc.

In the end I just watched Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

Which is awesome.

... oh and ummm something about letting your accent show.

But they're both Deadpool! How can Deadpool have a Deadpool crossover!?

Ohright, the Multiverse.

Bob's from Boston, so he has a Boston accent. You usually don't hear it because he rehearses what he has to say to make sure it doesn't show, but sometimes, when he's really angry or frustrated with something, it starts slipping.

See his Oscar Nominations/The Dark Knight rant for 2009 to see what I mean.
My first guess was that it was a Jersey (Joisey?) accent, but then I remembered it's Boston where r's become aaahs.
Yep. It helps that I've know Bob for a while, and he's brought up his Boston origins from time to time.

The problem I've always had with comic books isn't just the availability (which is indeed really annoying), but also the price. It's really hard to feel invested in the hobby if you can only afford to grab maybe one trade a month, if that, and the prices for individual issues just feel ridiculous to someone used to buying Japanese comics (especially now that I'm used to buying them at Japanese prices, about $6 for a 200 page book). It's too bad, because I really enjoy a lot of the comics friends have lent me over the years or that I've picked up myself on a whim.

Also, I haven't heard an accent that strong in about a decade and I've lived just outside of Boston my whole life.

Actually the worst accent is Middle-American-Nerd. 'Greetings and salutations everybody. *ahyuk*' ugh

You know there was a comic store right by where I lived. Didn't have an open sign, and it was always dark so it always looked closed.

Did anyone mention the accent yet?

Yes?

That's terrific.

Bob, you sounded like Scout from TF2, and that ain't a bad thing.
