Setting aside the horrible slaughter of the japanese language at the beginning, this was a really good episode.

Due to playing and loving Mario games as a little kid I found it hilarious to find out that he's not/was not a plumber from the beginning, but a clerk. This is probably why I love "The Big Picture", always something new weird popping up to keep you coming back for more.

Keep it up, more "X ARE WEIRD" episodes please!

Super Mario 64 style? Looks like he's beating him Super Smash Bros. style to me.

Anyway, fun little glimpse into the catacombs of early nerd culture. I once whined about it not really being a big picture very often, but eh, things like this are interesting nonetheless. Still, it's odd to use "And that's the big picture" after an episode like this.

Wow.. just wow.
Being that i only have vague memories of both the american Mario cartoon and movie when it first came out i really need to see this i don't care how much the seems like a let down, this is one of those video game gems that probably shouldn't be missed.

Considering the work of Gainax I can only hope these people usually aren't sober.
You should watch Paranoia Agent and Paprika... there's no way those were made by sober people.
I haven't seen paranoia agent, but Paprika is one of the trippest animation i have ever seen (fantastic planet being number one, watch if you dare) and definitely needed a decent amount of shrooms to pull that off

Ah story of my life...the Princess is always in another castle no matter how hard I bust my butt to save them. I suppose that's the real world lesson ending, short/poor dudes who do all work on the front lines end up as unsung heroes while the guy who's rich and has everything plows the girl while doing very little other than being rich/good looking. The disney endings rarely pan out in real life.

In the 1980's people forgot: "Nothing is so bad, that can't get worse."

Worse was the live action film. No, I don't wanna get even worse. Not in this life ¬¬

Frankly, I'm surprised how accurate the end result actually was. Bowser's appearance does not differ that much from the current one. Was he already drawn somewhere else other than in Super Mario Bros (e.g. the manual)? Even the mushroom people look pretty good.

On the episode, even though it was quite interesting it had the feeling that the subject can not fully fill out an entire episode. But then again, mabye I'm just generally spoiled by the other episodes of this great show ;)

WTF happened at 5:09??
Wow, I never heard about this, that's epic! It actually looks like a good movie, better that the other one you told us about at least. I'd love to see it, with subtitles of course, anybody know where I could find it?

Okay, okay, am I the only one who see's Bob is being way too critical on this as opposed to the OTHER animated version? I mean, let's face facts here. Since WHEN, has there been anything REMOTELY close to a sense of law or order to the universe in which the Mushroom Kingdom resides?

And what is with his little fanboy-ish tirade about the ending? Mario never gets more than a damned cake to begin with, and honestly, was there ever any mention of Peach making cakes for Mario BEFORE the 64 game? (Note: Anyone knowing the answer to that one REALLY needs to pull their head out of a certain green pipe and smell some fresh air)

Bob's never going to be satisfyed with anything anyone does with the Mario universe, because the man can't accept the very notion that anything good that actually CAN be made out of that madman's dream is probably one of the things he hates. Kind of like a spoiled child, he'll never be happy with it unless he makes it himself.

And chances are, he'll hate THAT too...

Holy crap! I want to find a place to watch that. I can't believe that that movie has all the character designs we have today. I wonder why it never made an appearence outside of Japan? Well there's no better time for an english release then now since the anime boom of the 00's. I'd buy 2 copies of that movie on DVD if it ever got released.

Bob's just mad that the character he was living vicariously through to "get the girl" got totally rejected too.

I don't understand why this movie is getting so much ire... look at it again like you would as a kid. This is EVERYTHING WE EVER WANTED. This is what we saw in our hearts every time we played a Mario game. This is what we envisioned when we heard about the movie. This production is essentially the perfect movie, for kid Mario fans.

"Thank you Mario!
But you get nothing for your effort, thanks anyway!"

Makes me glad Toad only ever told me about the other castle she might be in.

For some reason this inspired the thought of an alternate Star Wars ep1-3 where queen Amidala ends up with Jar Jar...

I think the most interesting thing about this is how accurate a lot of the design work is. Sure, Luigi's costume is completely off and there are a few other differences, but it's surprising just how similar characters like Peach, Bowser and most of the enemies you see are to their modern appearances. When you consider what Bowser looked like in the Super Mario Bros. Super Show cartoon that Bob looked at 2 weeks ago (halfway between a giant turtle and a giant toad) the design here (not to mention his motives for kidnapping Peach, when at the time it was generally considered that he was just an evil monster who wanted to "TAKE OVER THE WORLD!") is pretty much identical to the one we have today. I have to wonder whether this movie actually set the precendents for design and characterization which would eventually seep into later games, or whether these elements were ALWAYS inntended in the first game and were simply lost in the translation to english. Either way though, I'm pretty sure the way you fight Bowser in Mario 64 HAD to have been inspired by the "grab his tail and swing him around" scene from this movie.

Oh yeah, Bob also forgot to mention the amusing post-credits scene where Bowser and his minions are working in the Mario Bros. grocery store. So, not a TOTALLY wasted adventure then.

Wow, princess peach is a ***** ain't she? Expecting him to save her and her whole kingdom and giving him nothing but a goodbye in and a wave as they leave moments after
