While I enjoy Bob's reviews and find him pretty accurate on most things, he almost always overrates Superhero related films (or wastes two episodes telling us how bad one is) and so try and take those recommendations with a pinch of salt. Pity as I think there are some films not on his list that should be like Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
Wasn't a fan of TTSS. I felt the pacing was way off throughout/the whole film just dragged. And the potential moles were never seen enough by the audience to even give us a chance to work out who it was ahead of time, or cause any viewer investment in the answer. Tom Hardy's side story was the only bit that worked, and the film kind of shifted for that from 'glacially slow yet revealing nothing' to 'overly fast and spectacularly predictable'. It was well-acted, but that's about all I'll give it.

As for superhero films... I'm a DC guy. But still, the only one I feel was massively overhyped in review here was Thor (fairly average + Natalie Portman).

'Drive' is too low on the list for me. The soundtrack and cinematography is excellent and deliver an intense experience.

Great list, seen all the films. I wish you had seen MELANCHOLIA (now on demand) or TAKE SHELTER (too bad this isn't in many cinemas), because those would've equally blown you away as much as TREE OF LIFE as they're both visually striking, psychological dramas on the apocalypse. TAKE SHELTER has possibly the best and most intense ending of any film this year. It has been stuck in my head for months!

Michael Shannon really needs to be nominated for Oscars for his performance in Take Shelter:

Can't even believe anyone would have Midnight in Paris on any list. That movie was god-awful. Truly, truly terrible movie.

I've known this for almost 20 years, when the guitar magazines I was reading in high school ran "Best 50 Riffs of All Time" or "Top 20 Guitar Solos of All Time" articles every 4-6 months:

Whenever a news/journalism outfit does a "Top X" list or "Must Read/Watch/See/Listen" article, it's basically the professional equivalent of trolling. It's like flypaper for haters.

Captain America? Seriously? It was an OK film, but it was just so cliche.

My personal film of the year is Drive, followed by Rango.

I admit the reason I really enjoyed it is because it was glacially slow. As someone really fed up with the "Spy Thriller" being thrown onto films like Mission Impossible X (first was by far the best) and the Bourne films, a spy film which shows how the game is really played was a nice change of pace. This sort of slow paced drama is something the UK used to do really well (all hail Jahn Thaw and Inspector Morse) and it was nice to see it can still be done though I agree it would be a bit of a shock if you wern't expecting it.

I'm going to assume that Bob has not seen Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy yet.
Hope so.

Guys, these are Bob's top ten movies of the year, not THE top ten movies of the year. Just the ones he enjoyed the most. I agree for the most part. Cap wouldn't be in my top ten though, 'cause Troll Hunter happened this year, as did Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and Another Earth. But overall, good list. Glad to see Midnight in Paris get some love.

I happen to agree with the majority of the internet when I say Drive was my favourite film of the year.

I'm surprised (and pleased) that he didn't put Sucker Punch on here. He was worshiping that movie when it came out. I thought that was a sure bet for this list, even as a potential #1.

I'm not extremely in to comics or from the states so for me Captain America, X-men et all isn't that great... Honestly they are not bad but feels somewhat "just an action" at times, but it's great hollywood found out you can make decent movies out of comics and fantasy..

And let me guess "Bilbo" & "Avengers" is going to be among those he's looking forward to...

I'm so annoyed they started the teasing of Bilbo in the cinemas already. IT'S A YEAR AWAY, stop teasing me! I want it now!..

PS. Taste is personal some like blue some don't live with it and don't try to convince me otherwise.

can anyone recommend some good movies?
maybe your top 10s of the year?
I've been out of the loop, haven't been to the cinema once this year.
I can recommend anything else in return, esp music!

I was in a room full of people this week discussing movies, and someone brought up Midnight in Paris.

All but one guy (about 13ish people) said the movie sucked. And not just the normal kind of suck. I mean suuuuuuuuuuuuucccked.

The other guy? Thought it was brilliant.

I don't know who to believe, I guess I have to see it now.
Remember that the masses more often than not have shit taste. For example: Transformers and Call of Duty.

Drive. I seriously cannot stress this enough. Probably the best movie in over a decade. Just don't expect an action movie, like most of the people who hated it.

I still don't get the praise thrown at Captain America, am I missing something here? The first part of the movie, the whole origin, oldy-worldly part I admit is pretty good. But the moment the film got into the action, it tripped over it's own shoelaces and didn't get back up. Stupid story, stupid villains, stupid characters, stupid effects, stupid everything. Yet another birthday cinema trip wasted.
