Coca-Cola didn't invent Santa Clause (or even the red and white suit I believe, they just put him in it since it went with the branding).
They did however make Rudolf, unless I'm mistaken.
I thought that was Mal Mart or another one of the big corperations, I think I read it on this sight but I cant remember where. I also heard Santa was German or was it abit further north.

There is an entire religion based on the Jedi order? Where the fuck is the conversion papers! I wanna use the force!
It was only a creative way of saying FU to the national census.
N'awwww. Fuck it, I'm starting my own Jedi Religion. The meeting of the Jedi masters will be on Saturday if anyone is willing to come =P
Waaaaait a minute. You can't just come in here and declare yourself Jedi Master! You have to receive training. And face trials. And especially build your own lightsaber.
I'd really like to join Jediism, but I suggest we start small first.
But there was a council of Jedi Masters! And its only right that the ones who find the religion be the leaders of it. And besides, I'm already done building my lightsaber and I'm halfway through with the Jedi bible (And I've used the word 'force' in it 502 times so far.)

*Goes back to etching the Jedi Bible into scrolls with his lightsaber.* Oh god damnit! This one caught fire.
See, that's why you're not ready to be a Master yet. It's the Force!
Oh excuse me Mr.Widu, but have you survived a month in the harsh winters of Hoth yet!? I haven't either, but I already brought my ticket dammit D=<
Windu... I wish I was. Would've been a whole lot different then.
"I'm sick with this motherfuckin' Siths in this motherfuckin' Republic!" if you catch my drift.

Anyway, I may have not been to Hoth yet (their skiing ressort prices are out of my current price-range) but look at these awesome power converters I got on Tattooine!

Atheist=/=Hating religion

Probably wasn't intentional, but the subtext was there.
While I've never seen atheists standing on the corner yelling (yet), they do seem eager to share their opinion in personal conversation and don't like being disagreed with, which is pretty much status quo for obnoxious religious people.
I do love bringing it up in conversation (when appropriate). I love being disagreed with. How better to prove an ideal than to have it be challenged, and still have it turn out right?

What the fuck? I haven't even seen anyone practicing 'Jedi' in NZ >.>

Anyway, 'Nerd Gods' would probably receive public outrage, accusations from people 'degrading' and 'insulting' gods and worst of all, being heckled/teased about worshiping fictional characters.

I think we should let time run it's course until we make an actual religion. Oh wait I dibs on

The Imperium Of Man. Who wants to join xD?
Nice video Bob, love these series.

You know I actually thought about founding my own church once, it was going to be the Church of Mario and eating mushrooms and doing drugs would be part of are practices, therefore making the drugs legal. I think that is how it work i remember Native American tribes get to smoke weed or something because it was apart of their customs. Plus it would give Italian kids good role models instead of the Jersey shore people.

I've always kinda thought comics and popular culture could be considered our moral guides now. Many of the old comics were all about morals and correct behavior, mainly drawing from religion anyhow.

Interesting, Bob, that you would choose this topic now because I've just finished the 2nd book of Marvel's "Earth X" series, and that has a TON to say about religion and mythology.

Hell, Thor, the Asgardians, and pretty much all mythological beings are revealed to be highly evolved aliens that have no form or personality UNTIL someone imposes it on them: essentially, mankind MADE THEIR OWN GODS.

Plus, the highest forms of life, The Celestials, are said to have manipulated early man's gene pool with a "seed" that would allow them to evolve into super heroes. The Gods used the controversial concept of evolution for their own means

On Christmas:
I know it's trendy to decry Christmas as a capitalistic orgy, but really: what's so wrong about a secular holiday devoted to good will, gift-giving, charity, and kindness towards your fellow man, divorced from any obligation or threat from a higher power to do so? Sound pretty damn good to me!
It alienates everyone who isn't a christian? Can't go anywhere without hearing some crazy motherfuckers screaming "JEEESUUUS JEEESSUUSSS" our of a speaker in what passes for music during the holiday.
Think you misunderstood me. Bob said Christmas had become a celebration of capitalistic excess known as 'X-Mas'. I was asking: what's wrong with a secular holiday geared towards (to my mind) charity, good will, etc? I'm confused as to how that would alienate non-Christians??

Or did you just skip over/not know the meaning of the word 'secular' ;)

But hey, always nice to hear my Asshole Atheist brothers railing against intolerance while calling Christians 'crazy motherfuckers'. Protip: this is why Christians think we're all dicks, guy. Google the words 'hypocrisy' and 'arrogance'. Or watch Richard Dawkins talk for five minutes. But for the love of god DON'T BE RICHARD DAWKINS.

The reason I refuse to recognise Jedi as a religion personally is that I'm not convinced that those did it do so out of genuine belief in the concept of Jedi as a religion instead of just doing it to say "look at us! we made Jedi our religion! aren't we clever!" and as such I refuse to indulge them.
agreed

You went to Catholic school, huh? I did, too. Perhaps there's a connection between that and the nerd-isms you speak of. After all, obsessions, however mild, are the sources of many elaborate stories. Moses probably thought about the Commandments just as Shakespeare thought of what to produce at a given month. If you put a highly cognitive mind to things, you can come up with something interesting.

Well obviously, they call it 2011 AD for a reason.
Probably ninjaed, but actually, they don't. BCE (Before Common Era) is used instead of BC and CE (Common Era) is used instead of AD almost universally in the scientific community.

I must say that I am agnostic, under the belief that. God is probably there, just don't don't encourage him.
Also my Dad put Hitch-hicker as his religion for that census, with his religious leader being Slartibartfast.

Hmm. You know who scares the heck out of me? Scientologists. What do they worship? Themselves? Money? Their own personal success? The religion itself? Xenu?

Why is the whole thing based on secrets on top of secrets? Every other recognized religion I can understand, avoid or involve myself with at my leisure, knowing what is entailed. I have NO CLUE what Scientologists are all about, and their explanations just raise more questions and sound a hell of a lot like brainwashing.

I'm confused. What's wrong with Richard Dawkins? Care to elaborate? Also, SOME Christians (I'm not making generalizations) are just as guilty of the behavior you described, ie. standing outside abortion clinics condemning those going inside to hell,

Actually the philosophers have had a pretty static perception of what the term 'God' means (refering to Bobs comment on humans perception of gods changing over the course of history). The premises is actually more than 2000 years old.
You mean like, oh about 2010 years ago? Make that 2011? I think you are reinforcing his claim without knowing it...

More like 6500 years. (hmm... apparently Bob didn't do his research on this one, the monotheistic beliefs from which christianity is derived date back to what is commonly known to be slightly before the (human) discovery of firemaking)

And then the scientology statement...

Read the wikipedia articles, scientology appears to be based around the idea that without proper "freedom enducing treatment", you will die of pneumonia for the mere knowledge of scientological concepts. And the belief of them.

As for belief, I think it's kind of like an "Ascientism" (as in, there's no real higher power, aliens did it (which may well be possible, it's the exact method that leads me to question the mental stability of mr.Hubbard. see: Xenu) and that there can be no objective proof without assumed subjective evidence based on metaphysical alien technology somebody found somewhere we're not telling you about because you'll die of pneumonia.)

I find scientological belief to have even more metaphysical plotholes than the old testament.
And that's saying something.

Did I mention I read holy texts for fun?
And write them.
FOR FUN.

I take being a GM to its most extreme possible conclusion.

What we need to do is get the tabletop RPG commmunity to get in on this.
I know a boatload of people that would be more than happy to help come up with a new religion full of socially acceptable doctrines combined with a badass creation theory. In fact, I'll probably gather them and see if we can't make one up for the hell of it.
