I'll fully convert to console when I can aim with a mouse.
thats a major flaw in software, because you already can usb the pc controlls to console

@comment 250: wtf! you never need to upgrade PC, you know games stopped raising the bar when the current consoles settled in?

Yeah I know, but they won't make their games so you can use the mouse because it's unfair.

Eh, miniaturization hasn't come so far as all that. Perhaps soon the PC will simply be a box in your closet that stores your files and processes your games, and you'll access it from any of a dozen devices... but that box will still be necessary. Processors in mobile devices are still a joke, and compared to those we can make that put out the kind of heat modern PC processors do, they always will be. Until we find a truly viable replacement for silicon, there will always be the physical limitations of heat dissipation.
Honestly, I think the next wave (if corporate greed will allow it or hackers will make it despite corporate greed) is really the integration of what we think of as "consoles" into PC hardware. PCs are modular technology, they can process any code you want 'em to. Consoles are too limited to survive in the face of that.
In regards to a viable replacement for silicone, look up Graphene. It's a buckyball pattern carbon chain that's been flattened out, and has the greatest conductivity out of any material seen to date. We're talking 100x the power of silicone per square inch. So, let's say a square inch of silicone yields 1.4 GHz (it probably doesn't, we're using imaginary numbers. Stick with me) if you were to replace the silicone with graphene, it would yield 140 GHz. That's one damn fast processor. I think anything with that kind of capability could be used for anything we use our big desktops for right now. I, for one, welcome that.

If you're interested in what else bucky balls can do, look up carbon nanotubes. It's amazing stuff.

OK this is where I could get shouted down.

PC gaming is a broad definition ranging from AAA titles to MMOs to Indie to Facebook Apps so the fact a PC has the ability to adapt it can never truly "die".

This is where I agree with Bretty. Look at an Xbox's specifications and compare it to a high end PC. I've seen a six core CPU for sale which is three cores more than the Xbox 360.

The point is how did they decide what they needed to create these consoles and, in my opinion, this factor is experimentation, what can we get away with.

People see what they can do on a PC and people say "Hey can we do this somewhere else". Facebook started as a PC thing and now has been stripped down and simplified in part for a phone and phones are starting to get better and do more so more of facebook can be placed on a phone, we only have the technology existing because its been done before. It leads people in to see what can be done and challenges developers to catch up.

Its a cycle innovation, the PC creators provide innovation for its users and a second group of innovators use their knowledge to shoehorn it into another format.

However, a box CPU will never disappear but its use may change in ways we will not know. Where will dedicated servers be stored, where will the Cloud stuff be saved. I don't think the PC will "die" but the methods of accessing this data will change, already TVs can display movies on a PC in another room already and MyPC website allows remote access.

The biggest problem for PC gaming is PC hardware moves too fast. Within a year of the original quad core, someone thought of the Six Core probably before PC developers could master the power of the Quad.

Because a console is fixed we are seeing boundaries being pushed and graphics improve as developers try to give the maximum graphics for a small amoutn of CPU, the limitations are challenging them to give more with less. Think Indie publishers, they can do a lot with a little, there's both challenge and pressure, something that with increasing processing power as it is gives no pressure to do a lot with a little.

I had to laugh when he said that shooters have moved completely over to consoles. For those of you who don't know, for Bad Company 2's "Battle for Hastings" map pack, DICE made a competition between all 3 of the systems (PC, Xbox, and PS3). When a system reached 69 million team -action points (that is, points that benefit your team, like healing, repairing, resupplying, etc.), they would unlock the map pack. PC unlocked it first by a landslide. That is, even if both Xbox and PS3's team action were combined, PC still would have won. Even if PC sales are lagging behind, the community is very fucking alive.

I also had to laugh when he said that Motion Controllers/Pointers are going to have superiority over the keyboard and mouse. The only unquestionably successful FPS that's been released exclusively on the Wii was Metroid Prime: Corruption. Barely anyone makes shooters for the Wii, because they know the Wii just isn't suited for shooters the way a mouse or even a joystick are.

Bob, I'm going to say what you told me to - You don't know what you're talking about.

Yep, World of Warcraft + mods + RTS. Why is PC gaming dead again?
Also im pretty sure i wont be able to use 3D modeling softwares, or rendering stuff on all that fancy crap we saw in the video, not for a while at least, and even then, nothing will replace the keyboard, or the concept of keyboard at least. Its not about technology, its something about humans having hands, and keyboards that were made to be used by those hands.

Btw, i grew up with consoles, and still play on consoles, and if i can i always choose the console version for any game, but PC gaming will never die.

I do believe that consoles have their own benefits, but so does the PC. Mods, customization, ease of use, low price, better graphics, etc. etc.

There's so much that PC gaming has to offer. Much of the video is either lies or baseless predictions. Phones taking over PCs? Really?

I hate how people think that Zynga and Apple is the future. We've had crappy flash games for years now, and that didn't stop the development of Dawn of War or Counter Strike.

As for the Hardware debate. In no way shape and form can your phone, your laptop or your console provide the same high fidelity experience that a modern desktop can.

Desktops have better visuals, audio and overall performance. Heck the basic gaming desktop of today is easily a generation ahead of the console. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.247185-Crytek-PCs-Are-a-Generation-Ahead-of-Consoles]

If graphics, sound and data storage did not matter, we would all still be playing Space Invaders.

Edit: Corrected generation gap and provided a link to the article. My old memory is not as good as it used to be.
Pretty much this. That and the +20 million people who use Steam.

So to sum everything up: when the entire world has a console, phone, implant, etc. (the type doesn't matter) the PC will be dead because all of these devices people now use will be able to do the same work at the same speed and power and have users able to choose their input device (game-pad, joystick, mouse and keyboard, touchscreen, whatever) 30-45 years down the road.

OK cool...
Does this mean I get to save 2500 dollars every few years and not have to build a new rig?
But still...
Do we assume that the prices of PC's remain the same?
That Nvidia, Intel, AMD, and ATI will never reach a photo-realistic point where as to stop?
That the speed cap we are approaching will never be reached?
that computers will not reach an acceptable size without sacrificing performance?

I agree with Bob that we will see changes I just don't know when or how drastic they will be

First of all, I have to say that I am indeed a PC fanboy. But don't get me wrong, I too have played several consoles starting from NES and Sega Mega Drive to PSX and PS2 and so on. And I have enjoyed every console that I have played.

However, what Bobbo here said about people moving to these various handhelds to do their work and whatnot that they used to do with PCs feels if not completely then at least very much, incorrect. True, these everyday functions that aren't tied to professional work can be done with various devices starting with the letter 'i' but those devices compared to the raw power of a good PC... Needles to say, they are left in the dirt. If you ask any self-respecting person using computer to more than just writing a document or doing some calculations in Excell whether they choose handhelds and such over a powerful PC, I think they will still choose the PC. Tablets, PDAs, iPhones and laptops are nice but they are hardly made for professional use. I have never during my graphic design career met a pro who would rather do the work with a laptop and its awfully generic rig, not to mention their below par screens rather than a real PC.

And to say that PC gaming is dying means only that developers are choosing the easy way out. If you make crappy quality games (not the story or gameplay but mostly the visuals and things that are affected by the rig of the console) you can always say that it's just the platform's fault that we can't push the boundaries. With PC gaming this is hardly the problem. To me, it is the PC versions of games that really let the gems shine through and also reveal the sloppy art. Case and point: Crysis 2 (it still feels good to me but I can see that some corners were cut during the development process).

"You don't know what you're talking about"
There. Nice one making sure no one can call you out without looking like a angry neck-beard.
But whatever. Shogun 2 was released today. Good times were had.

I find that it is hard to really argue with the video because some things he said are true, but imply falsities.

Yes, at one point PC gaming was behind console gaming. Then ID came along and changed all that. PCs have had the better hardware and more versatility for years. But the video makes it sound like nothing has changed.

As I said it depends on what you're asking. Look at the two system types side by side and ask what's the difference between consoles and PCs, the answer is motivation and demographic. Xbox 360 and PS3 have the motivation of achievements where as the only option is win or lose, OK with steam achievements this has changed but this forces players into using the best role for the job so you're more likely to get better teamwork in PC over console.

Moving onto demographic, who has hit the mute button on a 360 or PS3 because of some kid threatening to do things to you. They are not mature enough to work together in a team when it matters so are less likely to use team actions as much.

Looking at Bobs arguements, yes there are some things I would disagree with. However what I do beleive is that there are some changes in the pipeline that will change the PC landscape in a different way. PC gaming is evolving not dying and I think by using the title he has has set himslef up for a fall bigger than the Banks as has been discovered here.

*yawn* Sorry what? I was busy heading over to Teamliquid and enjoying my scbw and sc2 community..What's this about my gaming platform being dead now?

Huh. Someone better Tell the North American Star league this before they get started. Probly also want to let the IEM and MLG know as well that they can't exist because I guess we are all dead and don't exist.

Now insert a "PC gaming, happily "dying" sense 1985" picture and call it a day.

I'll see you around for Heart of the Swarm, the next valve release, and whenever you feel like playing. It's cool we don't mind. PC gaming will be around.

Can't say I really agree with a lot of that Bobby.
I've been a console gamer for about 18-20 years now, and I got a gaming PC only last month. It's miles better by far :)

So yeah, the whole 'grown into denial' thing really doesn't hold any water...
I think the biggest delusion people have, is saying that the consoles advance towards PCs have always boasted as 'benefits' means that PC gaming is now dying. The reality is pretty much that consoles are now just up to scratch (well nearly, we haven't seen if mouse/motion controls will even stuck in the long run)

Essentially, somehow I doubt that iPads or iPhones will ever replace the functionality of a whole home computer. You'll never see people at my Uni doing their assignments on their phone. Just isn't practical.

Some things are just necessary~

EDIT: Actually, notice how laptops were not mentioned.
Laptops ARE computers, and I agree laptops will probably replace the box PC. But ...it's still a PC.
Well, tablets are going a long way to replacing even laptops, with pretty much the only one people can name being the iPad. A lot of smart phones are just smaller tablets nowadays with telephone capabilities, but tablets in themselves have pretty much enough processing power and memory to get what you need done wherever and whenever you need it done. They're just not up to snuff with gaming PCs as of yet.
