I not gonna claim to have read that list exhaustively but apart from the MMO's (and it looks like mmo's are becoming multi-platform reasonably soon anyway) arnt most of the PC exclusives on that list very obscure/shit?
Disagree. I'd say at the very least a third of that list is at least an A rated game.

wait wait wait... did you just have the balls to call a CA game shit??....... i am now forced to slap you with my glove and call you a bufoon!
I didn't. ShakyFiend did. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/6.270785-The-Big-Picture-PC-Gaming-Is-Dead-Long-Live-PC-Gaming?page=3#10411663]

I held off the rage, i listened, I came to the conclusion that you should stick to talking about what you know rather than subjecting us to your idle musings.

What you fail to recognise is that PC gaming offers a unique experience, that for many aspects of gameplay is significantly better than what is offered by other mediums.

What is a PC? its some sort of computing device that you sit at a desk to use and operate with a mouse and keyboard, using a monitor. A console will never be this, a tablet will never be this.
Its true that fewer people are finding that they need a PC but then its also true that those people never really needed a PC anyway, they just needed some of the functions of a PC, which as you point out can be facilitated in more practical ways. However this does not change the fact that the PC has tremendous potential beyond that of these other devices and it is and will be for the foreseeable future a fixture in many homes. PCs may be becoming more niche but they are by no means dying, and I wouldn't buy into all that cloud computing crap if I were you, in 40 years from now I'm still expecting to see keyboards and mice in almost the same numbers we do now.

I disagree with the assertion that motion controllers like the Kinect and Move replace the mouse, on the grounds that Metroid Prime 3's Wiimote solution to aiming was inelegant and inferior to mouse aim because if you point the Wiimote too far off the edge of the screen to turn, it stops working and Samus enjoys a bout of narcolepsy while you fuck with the thing. I continue to assert that playing an FPS with any non-mouse controller, let alone with two analog sticks, is the exclusive purview of pitiable Neanderthal Men, doomed to waddle around with their poor fine motor skills until they are outcompeted into extinction by superior, mouse-using Cro Magnons like myself.

That and RTS's, since you need every last goddamn key to be competitive. Curse my shitty Cro Magnon memory!

*ahem* wouldnt hurt to at least acknowlege steam in your argument bob.
one day we will all move to laptops because they are PC's. except portable. the PC will never die and live on in laptop form. the purists will still want a monster computer while others will be perfectly content to live with a laptop that can comfortably run steam and all its games.

i don't see the pc dying out anytime soon. the whole 'PC is dead' thing is nothing more than an urban myth in my opinion.

As for the Hardware debate. In no way shape and form can your phone, your laptop or your console provide the same high fidelity experience that a modern desktop can.

Desktops have better visuals, audio and overall performance. Heck the basic gaming desktop of today is easily a generation ahead of the console. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.247185-Crytek-PCs-Are-a-Generation-Ahead-of-Consoles]

If graphics, sound and data storage did not matter, we would all still be playing Space Invaders.

Edit: Corrected generation gap and provided a link to the article. My old memory is not as good as it used to be.
Gah!
Hazah! this to its fullest extent! (I even got shogun 2 yesterday :D) This better explains my previous rant in a non banning mannor, i like it
Diablo 3 may not be on that list ultimately: http://www.g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/711050/blizzard-teases-diablo-3-on-consoles-pc-gamers-around-the-world-mourn/
Really???? NOOOOOOO!!!! It has always been a PC only game though... Ohwell, there are many other great titles in that list
Don't be an asshole, the more people enjoy the game the better. And it's developed for the PC in mind so don't worry, Blizzard won't screw it's biggest audience.
Im not being an asshole, im just genuinely concerned that if it goes to other platforms, that they will then turn their attention toward the other platforms, leaving the PC Community to complain, then when they release their next game, it will be a console only exclusive... I dont want that to happen.

If a game is good enough, it doesnt need to be cross platforms to recieve popularity, people will return to PC gaming and threads like this will cease to exist

Well... when the PC gamers do fully transition, it'll be a lot easier to pirate console games. PEople are already cracking mobile devices relatively quickly to remove proprietary limits, so soon, game companies will be complaining "OMG PIRACY IS KILLING CONSOLE GAMING"

HOWEVERRR, The PC will never fully go away as long as people still demand a place where THEY have control over what is on their device, not limits imposed by a device manufacturer that keep people from playing flash files, or opening certain apps, or installing "unapproved" software on their own fucking property.

Imagine if you buy an HP laptop and HP has limits one what you could put on it, things only they approve for you to use in both hardware and software, that'd piss you off right? Well that's what's going on with tablets, phones, portable gaming, and consoles... companies are limitiing what you can do more and more with your own property. So once mobile devices start being treated like property that customers actually own and can modify and personalize like the PC, computers as we know them definately will go away. As long as companies force you to put up with using apps only they approve of, PCs will still be here.

Seems to me that a lot of people missed the point of this video entirely. Bob simply said that the PC as we know it is on the way out the door. Sure it will still exist for dedicated applications or PC enthusiasts, but it's already pretty quickly getting to the point where your average person doesn't need a PC. This will quickly be followed by your average person not wanting a PC. It's not about "durr.. well you'll need 15 different things to replace a PC!!!1!" It's more like you need one smartphone, and full on smartphones are easily affordable by almost anyone these days. And no, unlike what far too many people in this thread are stating, it's not because your average person is too stupid to use a PC or too stupid to play the obviously superior games that exist on it. It's simply because they don't place working with a PC and learning how to use it above a basic level as something they care about doing.

Hardcore "PC" games aren't going anywhere, but they're going to be even more of a niche product than they already are.

I play pc games first and console games second. The only games I play on consoles are 3rd person games (not shooters mind you(except GTA then)), driving games and console specific games. Steam has made pc gaming so convenient!

At the risk of being insulted i have to say that everyone of his points is invalid he gives no reasons or explanations as to how, why, when, for example tablets will not replace the PC, for the simple reason they are too small, my massive, huge, monster, bulging graphics cards are about 90% of the size of an IPad (over hyped expensive waste of time). I have a ps3, 360 and Wii, none of which will ever have the functionality of the PC.

No other device offers the same customization options as a PC, none of them are so easily upgradable, none are as powerful, none are so user friendly.

My pc has 6tb of space on which i have, movies, tv shows, music, games, pictures and useful software such as open office. it is a media center the PS3 the best media player of all 3 consoles offers no where near as good as a pc, with the correct set up.

Also he states that the PC has no games it is better at than the consoles due to motion controllers ( even the best ones are a gimmick and are not as good as a pad ), well the FPS, using a mouse and keyboard will always beat an a console using either a pad or motion control. Have u tried playing a RTS on a console talk about an adventure into annoyance. the only 2 kinds of games the controller is better at are fighting i.e Tekken and racing i.e GT5, but oh look i just found a controller for my pc oh well problem solved.

Consoles have all the draw backs of a pc, such as not being portable, but with none of the benefits i.e easy to use and very powerful. I mean play Supreme commander on the 360 and then on a PC, with about 100 units on screen the 360 lags like hell, i can have battles with 1000 on my pc and hardly any lag or frame drops, although having said that if i did have 1000 units using a controller i would probably get so frustrated id quit.

a final note is that i was an avid console gamer until a few years back and a friend showed me his gaming pc set up and what is was capable of, i never once though "u know this would be better on a console"

So, you want to replace one centralised hardware that does everything your phone/tablet/etc does, and does it better, with an array of hyper-specialized, expensive, and ineffective stuff?

Dont let the door hit your fat ass on the way out, you lobotomized troll.
show me a smart phone/tablet that can play crysis and u have won until then shut up and play angry birds.

show me a smart phone/tablet in which i can word process more effectivly than a pc

show me a smart phone/tablet that i can store 300 Hd movies on and then watch on a 37inch screen.

if u cant guess what im getting at here its that the only thing a smart phone or any phone does better than a pc is that its a phone and portable, and tablets are just well Ipad need i say more a super expensive, useless bit of techno garbage from the "trendy" people at apple.

(laptop - power) + (phone - phone) = Ipad

*looks to the left "OH my GOD what is this its like a pc only portable hmm..... a ....la....p...top, but can it play games?.....................oh my god it can" throws Ipad in bin*

Did anyone else think the title was a Videodrome reference?

Anyways, interesting episode, although I almost expected this to be a Game Overthinker episode as oppossed to a Big Picture episode.
which in itself is just a reiteration of

The King is Dead. Long live the King.

Signaling the Hail to a New King. After the death or conquer of the old.

I agree that this sounds more like Overthinker Territory.

I could only get four minutes in to the video.
I tried really, REALLY hard to listen to Bob's argument, but like all of his movie reviews HE JUST DOESN'T KNOW WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT (besides what he reads on wikipedia).

PC gaming had HUGE sales increases in 2010. Services like Steam and D2D provide direct content at cheap prices. Indie developers are able to instantly promote and distribute their games. Mac Fascists aside, the PC is far from dead. Tablets and smartphones cannot replace a personal computer no matter how hard they try (I also don't know why Bob listed a laptop and PC as two different things).

I'm not a PC elitist by any means. I loved my N64 and PS2 and cherish my PS3. But playing games on my computer has its own opportunities. For one, buying things through a Steam sale is usually a hell of a lot cheaper and also means wherever I bring my laptop and have an internet connection, I have a library of over 40 games.

PC gaming is far from dead and MovieBob, as usual, is far from right.

I can't believe Bob didn't mention piracy in this episode. PCs provide more freedom than any other gaming platform, that includes mods (good) and piracy (bad). PC gaming sales have been suffering at ungodly low sales levels due to games being stolen. Remember DMC4 on the PC? It looked amazing and played terrifically, so why didn't Bayonetta get a PC port? Because you, me and everyone we know pirated the shit out of DMC4. Devs are already getting hurt from pre-owned sales and piracy doesn't help.

That being said PC gaming will only die once this generation of PC gamers dies out. As it stands the PC offers too much to gamers to be forgotten as a gaming platform any time soon.
Bayonetta's a SEGA Property while DMC4 was a Capcom property. Last I looked Capcom was still supporting PC gaming. I thought I saw Dead Rising 2 for PC a while back.

While I agree with your post, bob did say the PC is DYING, not that it is DEAD.

He also said that the PC will be replaced by these things and hinted that this will occur by the generation behind us, not that our generation will give up PCs in exchange for other devices.
Well, as long as he's not saying this generation will give up PCs. I was pretty worried I'd have to give up my PC, but if he's just talking about the next generation, I'm fine with that. And if they ever mention wanting a real computer, I'll tell them to blame Bob.

Like I said, PC game sales rose last year
I'm going to do something you probably won't see here (as a PC supremist).

I demand evidence.
You both fail to see the point. Sales are completely irrelevant as they are not sales of PC games they are sales of console games that can be played on the PC. Its the pure blood PC game that is dying out (I didn't mean that so sound quite so nazi but its the only way I can think to put it).

The problem with these new media are that they don't offer the same features that PC gaming offers.

Games designed for non-PC platforms are different sorts of games. Games running on non-PC platforms are much harder to modify to suit each particular gamer's preferences. And, as yet, I haven't seen a non-PC gaming platform that can match the output of even a mid-range gaming PC.

Not to mention that I think the 16:9 aspect ratio is the work of the devil. 16:10 is much better for gaming.
