Thing is it's the other way around, PC gaming isn't dead. Consoles are dead. Like fish that crawled on land for the first time Consoles are evolving into PC's. they are doing more then just games. the mere fact that you CAN plug keyboards and mouses into consoles these days is that console manufactures HAVE computers themselves. Gaming doesn't get any better then PC gaming, the verity is endless, and from soup to nuts if you LIKE to play games a certain way...well, you got it baby. Company's like alienware and other design company's are making it easier for even the less technically inclined to not only have the best hardware in the world but come with the features THEY feel comfortable gaming in.

whats the difference between a PS3 and and alienware MX11? not much, technology is enabling consoles to sing and dance at the same time. you even have people HACKING their consoles to free them from a companys clutches, put on their own operating system and do what they please.

Console gaming is great, it brought gaming to the masses, but as it evolves, it is bringing people to do more. when we can do what we choose then it becomes a...personal device...a personal computer.

There is a reason why there are allot of Xbox360 games on the PC, Bob. Its because microsoft built a console that IS a PC. porting them is cost effective and makes sense.

The personal computer might change shape, it may get smaller or bigger, it might even be a holodeck in your basement. but if its a computer for your personal use and not just a 'device' to perform a function...your PC gaming and your loving every moment of it.

So when your cell phone sounds like Hal and types your book report is your Cell phone a cell phone anymore? or is it a computer with skype loaded onto it?

if you went back to 1986 and asked what OS his NES was running, he wouldn't have any idea what your talking about, but if you ask someone with an IPAD playing infinity blade, I bet they know...slowly but surely...WE are not disappearing, you are becoming us as you unlock your car from your Iphone. This is just silly. You said it yourself: consoles, tablets, laptops, phones, whatever...these things are all just PCs. Less powerful, less versatile PCs. By the time the more mobile devices catch up to plain old tower-based PCs in overall computing and graphics power, the tower-based PCs will once again be three times as powerful as any of the aforementioned.

Exactly, and that's what I meant before when I said about people seemingly not considering what PCs will be capable of when all the gadgets catch up to what current PCs are doing.

Yeah it will be forgotten may be it will be called differently after a millennia, but The PC is a concept. Windows, a xbox a mac, iphone are products, have you ever heard of a PC2, I guess no, because the PC is not a brand or a product. That is just like saying that food will disappear. May be Tacos will, but food as nourishment Won't. I have a PC in my pocket a HTC, I disable the phone program and its a basic a PC. that is just like saying that food will disappear. We are not outraged that he thinks that stationary towers will diaper, hell I do too, but the PC will be around long after the consoles are forgotten.

What will survive is the content, but it will be accessible from a variety of sources, be it your TV screen, desktop screen, or whatever other screens you happen to own. Games will be divided by the software a company produces instead of their hardware. In the future, Steam, XBLA, PSN and whatever else has since been invented will be forces to competitively coexist on multiple pieces of hardware.

PC gaming is going to die.

I don't see why I would need a tablet, notebook, phone and game console to do all those thing when i could just have my pc. thats why we don't have separate texting and calling devices but rather 1 thing that can do both.

I disagree with most of what's been said here. It seems highly biased.

The PC is king because it does everything, and - with the right hardware - does everything better than any other machine. It's customisable to meet the user's specific needs, too.
Tablets are an overpriced gimmick with only the most basic functionality; phones/PDAs, etc. are limited by size (limiting hardware and thus price, and user-interface), extra costs, reliability, etc.; Games consoles are weak when compared to modern PC hardware, lack versatility, and rely on controllers as user-interface - vastly inferior to the mouse/keyboard setup in terms of precision; laptops are currently underpowered and overpriced, and limited by battery life - however, they're the most promising on this list, simply because they're just portable PCs. Once somebody invents a fully-customisable, upgradable, cheap, high-powered laptop design, I'll be all for leaving our giant PC ATX cases behind.

Ignorance is causing this assertion that PC gaming is somehow dying. Ignorance and the expense involved in PC building.

I think Bob's using the right deductions to make the wrong argument here. Mostly because he's insisting on using the term 'PC' over and over instead of just 'computer'.

Consoles, through processing power and utility, are becoming more and more like computers. Computers, through laptops and tablets, are becoming more and more like consoles. Eventually they'll coexist in the same hunk of plastic and electronics, and we'll do all our digital work and recreation on the same kinds of devices.

'PC gaming' is only dying because all gaming is coming together under one roof. 'Console gaming', playing video games on a machine dedicated to doing just that and nothing else, is also dying. My PS3 is already my DVD player, it's not a huge leap to imagine I'll do my homework on it one day as well. It'll just be the one upstairs in the study where my PC is now, because I need the fuckin' peace and quiet.

I personally like the idea of using one system for everything, an easier way to streamline. My main issue with game consoles, or even cellphones, is their highly restrictive operating systems. I can't take a non-jailbroken iPad to my school and print out any work I've done without emailing it to myself to print off a school computer, and taking something like a X-box 360 to school, or a PS3, would be just as ridiculous as bringing a desktop, but I wouldn't be able to print on them, hell I wouldn't even be able to go on Google with the X-box. It just seems quite burdensome that I would need multiple systems and interfaces for multiple things. I personally dislike needing a laptop to work at school and my desktop for recreational use. I do see Bob's point, and I do have to agree that objects like the iPod and cellphones are becoming very powerful and will only continue to increase in power, until they end up replacing the need for objects like laptops or even possibly desktops. I just hope for whatever future system there is for gaming, that its also the system that's used for doing paperwork, social networking, possibly even texting.

I basically agree with you Bob, but I think it's further in the future than you think.

For one, I need a keyboard - I can't think of anything that can replace it. Smart-phone 'keyboards' are too small to type rapidly on. iPad touch-screen 'keyboards' are better, but I still have to press one key at a time, and it just doesn't feel right.

The PC WILL continue to exist - why? Because people need a place to work. They generally like to work sitting down. That's how I do my work anyway. Higher end software is still needed that doesn't run on a Pad like device.

Plus, as the technology improves and the graphics improves, we will continue to push things further and further. There will always be programs and games that can only run on the PC, because that's where the technology is. Pads and Pad-like devices aren't as powerful.

Look, no one can tell what the future will be or what will happen to PCs. Maybe PCs will die out, or maybe the technology and software will advance to where they become absolutely necessary again. Maybe future advancements will create something entirely new! Who knows?!

I know that PC gaming is shrinking - ever since Consoles became more powerful that has always been the case. And I like my consoles, I like them just fine. But Computer games will always be around - because a market exists for them, and no one will ignore an empty market.

I'd love to think that you just created this for page views, out of spite, because most of the reviewers have their own little hate pad against computers.

I know this isn't true though. You've just redefined all the words. Whee. That's nice. And added a disclaimer that if anyone flames, you're right as well.

I'm not going to get angry, because the writing on the wall's been there for some time. You work on PCs, you play on consoles, so because you hate work, you have to differentiate them.

Consoles ARE PC hardware. Not a single this gen console has a proprietary cpu or graphics chip anymore.

The only thing that kills Pc gaming seems to be the laziness of game developers to make anything have more graphics than a Xbox 360.
A PS3 can handle more...but why make a game with two graphic settings or needs to be cut down for a weaker system? And in the mean time when you port to the PC don't try and doll it up...

the general idea you have there is what i've always envisioned as the future. One main hub with the ability to do anything, with a removable handheld that alows you to stay in touch with your computing needs when you're out (smart phones are going that way now and slowly becoming more adept PDA's) last idea is perfect btw, who's seen a pager, not in the hands of an on call doctor, in the last 5 years? yep, that's coz the mobile ate them all.
