Oh right, because the only games in existence are Sims and First Person Shooters, and the only RTSes in existence are Starcraft. :p

Well, my family didn't get me a PC because they "needed" one, they got it because I asked them (and begged for several months). As far as all the other consoles, if the past 2-3 years have proven anything to me, it's how much superiour a PC really is- you can play absolutely ANYTHING on it, even games meant for consoles and you're only going to need to upgrade some of the parts in 3-4 years instead of dumping the whole thing in the trash-can. in fact, I haven't done a serious upgrade in 6-7 years and I can still play 90% of games fine, even if it's on medium. How many consoles can say the same?

So, even if we do survive 2012, I don't think PC gaming will die, or if it really does die, I'm absolutely certain consoles will follow shortly thereafter. And talking about smart phones & tablets & whatnot, they may become more popular than PC's, but I somehow doubt that'll be because of their potential as gaming platforms.

I think you have it backwards mate.
CONSOLES ARE BECOMING PC'S

With apps and media center functionality and hard drives and downloading.

the only thing that separates a PC from a Console is the ability to install other OS....

Wait......

Ill edit this to add...

The only reason PC gaming would die.. is if geeks get too stupid to use anything but consoles.

Eh. PC's are currently still needed to actually create any of the stuff we play.

Ever tried making a game for a mobile phone? Guess what you need to own to pull that off?
Same for the Ipad (Macs are technically PC's too)
That goes for the consoles as well.

While the PC exists, people will game on it.

Aside from which, have you actually looked at the hardware in a PC? 90% of tasks require maybe 1/10th the graphical power modern graphics cards provide.

The rest exists solely for the purpose of playing games.

A weird thought for a device that is for 'serious' business. (but then again, most office PC's now suck at playing games; Which wasn't true 15 years ago.)

To be honest, I just don't quite see a device existing that can do the tasks a PC does, or has the flexibility.

The mere fact that none of the alternative devices are capable of being used to develop software for themselves points to a big question mark about the situation.
(Hmm. Actually, I wonder if I can create a Java compiler that will run on my phone? That'd be interesting. XD)

Mr. MovieBob

From where I stand you are a narrow-minded jerk. Your trolling of a video got me so enraged that I actually registered to leave my comment. I can relate to some poor attempts with your new gig, but this is way too much. I would appreciate it if you were to just hear my arguments out, make what you will of them.

Now you imply that PC is done more then gaming on the PC is dead or dieing, eagerly awaiting the ?next big thing?. So the consumers are on the latest consoles and it?s a ?slow week? for new PC games, big deal. It happens.

The key word here is ?emulation?. PCs back in the day ware too slow to run even NES games, but now they can, easy. And yet no one releases a DOS emulator on consoles. For that mater, to port a game you need development teams to actually do a lot of hard work. Since many old games are now freeware from closed down companies, they probably won?t get ported, and your best bet is an emulator of an operating system it ran on. Eventually this will happen to all games. Consoles live and die, PC just gets upgraded.

People tolerate these behemoths because they its not the size, but features that other devices don?t have. PCs are more than just games, Microsoft Office and video editors. Modern portable devices are all about being small, so they don?t have the biggest coolers (limiting work zones and time) or most powerful hardware. More importantly, you can?t upgrade or repair them peace by peace. A power block blew in your Mac slab ? by a new one, or get someone with welding skills to frankenstein it back to life. On a PC you just replace the broken part just like you would a tire on a car. And let?s not waste space about third person software blocking by big companies.

Now I live in east Europe, and out here we can?t afford all the new media devices at the same time. Hell, here modern consoles are actually a novelty because they cost so much. What you will find in homes are PCs, many old and clunky. For us PCs have proven to be a great long lasting investment. And believe it, it?s cheaper and easier to get a lame PC game or open up Solitaire than to try and master every console there is, only to look like a fool when the next big thing comes out.

Simply put, a lot of PC gamers play none console related games they never played before (25 years of games is a lot to shift through) or play their own old time favorites. We don?t have to like or play just one thing over and over again. We like our vast choices.

Hell, why don?t you bring up ?NES games are dead? while you?re at it, or better yet ?Super Mario Bros. vs Solitaire?. So it?s a ?slow week? for new PC games. Come back to us in 5 to 10 years with this.

Sincerely, Minjen.

PS: It takes a hell lot of time to get authorized on your forum.

There will always be people, like me, who are really into technology and have the drive to learn and understand and aren't merely apathetic. I can tell you that the people who I could identify as geeks, or at least the ones I know, are a little more open minded than the average consumer and less ignorant. I'm not willing to merely throw my money at something before doing some research, which is a big problem when dealing with insane fanboys who are convinced that their choice of is better because they're bombarded with ads but I digress.

I agree with you, and many of the others who have stated it, that consoles are becoming PCs with massively restrictive properties. It's not unreasonable to assume that consoles are just going to disappear at some point because building a pc will become easier, cheaper and more practical. Though this is greatly hindered by the realization that we'll always have to deal with commercialization... but I'm being optimistic!

People have been saying PC gaming is dead for 10 years

As much i respect you Bob you have just joined the long list of doomsayers, all of which up till this point have been wrong. The odds are not in your favor.

Additionally, since you mentioned Starcraft ill say this, in 10 years i will probably sit down in front of a piece of hardware connected to a screen of some sort and play a Starcraft esc game using a ( probably ) mouse and keyboard. The thing i play it on will be able to play games, watch movies, music, word documents, the lot. Maybe it will have a Sony logo stamped on the side, but this doesn't mean its a gaming console. For all intensive purposes it's a PC. Consoles are turning into PC's, as such neither is "dieing", they are basically merging.

Your argument shoots itself in it's own foot sadly. As you point out, indeed, consoles are diminutive functionality PCs. They have shown in their pursuits of added functionality that they want this, to provide a broader purpose than they do now. Which can all be had, now, in the form of PCs. They can be connected to the television (for gaming, or as a monitor), you can use a controller, whatever additional functionality they add to consoles, either will or already exists on PCs. The idea of trading in a long standing platforms compatibility and availability of software (not to mention forcing older developers to learn how to write for new platforms, but who the hell cares about them right?) for a "New" PC under the guise of an even further proprietary format seems like a poor choice ultimately. I may not be perfectly thrilled with Windows, and I know I'm not alone in that, but the idea of discarding it now for a handful of competing consoles seems insipid, worse probably, likely it will be destructive. The only things they need is to be put in a case suitable for use under the television, with a pair of controllers and a television that allows smaller text to be legible. All very assailable tasks.

Back in the early eighties, numerous computers of various types were created by many, many companies, Casio, Texas Instruments, Apple, Commodore*, IBM (the forebears of todays PCs) and many others threw there hat into the ring to try to produce personal computers. What you're asking for is a distilled version of that, back to compatibility issues, software that has to be ported to multiple platforms and thus has poorer and poorer support and implementation, narrower functionality (since more time has to be spent making ports rather than refining one version) These kinds of issues will be the pain in the ass almost universally, when ultimately you're just trading one operating environment for another! Though I have no doubt some marketing and businesspeople would love to see this happen, this is ultimately a bad thing. Windows may not be perfect, but you can't just wish it away.

This supposition about cloud computing...have you tried Onlive? Do you really think that will supplant consoles nee PCs? If you haven't noticed, ISPs like say, comcast (largest cable provider in the U.S.) are more hell bent on making money than ever. And do you know what that means? Unless you pay for premium upon premium service, a premium gaming experience will be inaccessible to most. The bandwidth requirements to make a service like onlive satisfying are much greater than what is provided now. If you really believe greed will ever go away in a capitalist nation, you're either a fool or incredibly naive. It will serve people better to have a small PC doing the computation at home, by simply being less expensive. Having some sort of computer at home that can do some processing serves the consumer in a huge way. Alleviating their reliance on ISPs that want to take your money for something to wipe their asses with.

Just as a side note, the smug tone you start off your tirade with, no matter the poor, deliberately incensing the (non-) ceveat at the end, still does create ire. There was no need, and it's clear you wanted the flameware, you would not have set the tone thusly had you not desired it. You're responsible for people's bad behavior here and now. Don't try to pawn it off.

*sniff

P.S. Sorry if any of these points have already been covered and this amounts to a repeat post. The thread is already very long, and I don't really want to read pages and pages of it without being paid. ty.

As a kind of end note: Microsoft isn't going to give up it's near monopoly on OSs to be supplanted by a competitor. They'd probably willingly give up that control to the xbox, and would have a good chance to be the dominant platform. For one good reason: Microsoft office. Office is an incredibly commonplace standard for office productivity software, if said platform war came to exist, they'd likely not make it available via a browser, they'd force you to run it locally, and not make other versions available. The reason to fight the thing you predict lies herein; we don't want an even more draconian proprietary network of products and services, we want it open. At least to the largest extent possible. I'm not going to argue the whys here, but wanting what bob offers is likely a bad thing.

At this juncture, I'd like to suggest that you go learn to put together a PC, and build one for use in your living room, under the television, and game on it, and make it clear to developers that if they build games for that arrangement of computer hardware, people will be buying it. Building your own pc offers one incredibly useful and important tool. The ability to mitigate technological failure on your own, without putting money in the hands of tech support people of one of a couple of options. Technological failure is going to happen. It always does, from lightbulbs burning out, to car failures to RRsOD. Being able to mitigate the damage on your own serves you, by not letting them tax you for services and products you could manage on your own.

PC Gaming is not dead, nor will it ever die. Why are they still researching/bringing out new video cards that exceed anything needed for video editing and CAD drawings? For your precious tablet? Oh, wait, it wont fit in your tablet ...

End Rage...

I do also play console games, but i still love to play my PC, and hate to think that game developers can just leave us for dead because a few Console fanboys or tablet fanboys say PC gaming is dead

End 2nd rage..

Im just going to leave before i get banned...

Um, why should I use a bazillion devices when I can have them all in one? Our family is not so fucking rich you know. I still consider that a good pc (especially a laptop) is all you really need.

And I also disagree with you about the motion controller malarkey. Unless they invent a system that gives you physical feedback, like your "colleague on this very site said, motion controls are unimmmersive!

As for the Hardware debate. In no way shape and form can your phone, your laptop or your console provide the same high fidelity experience that a modern desktop can.

Desktops have better visuals, audio and overall performance. Heck the basic gaming desktop of today is easily a generation ahead of the console. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.247185-Crytek-PCs-Are-a-Generation-Ahead-of-Consoles]

If graphics, sound and data storage did not matter, we would all still be playing Space Invaders.

Edit: Corrected generation gap and provided a link to the article. My old memory is not as good as it used to be.
Gah!
Hazah! this to its fullest extent! (I even got shogun 2 yesterday :D) This better explains my previous rant in a non banning mannor, i like it

Um, why should I use a bazillion devices when I can have them all in one?
Because Steve Jobs is the Messiah!

You want to be happy and get into iHeaven, don't you?

You don't want to become a social pariah, do you?

You want to be happy and hip and always in the now of the ultracool.

You need to buy a shitpot of iDevices that have almost identical functions.

Mate. Spawn. Die.

I can't say I agree. I haven't taken the time to read all 23 pages of comments, so you'll have to forgive me for whatever I repeat. PC's offer one thing that consoles do not. Power of choice. It's best for the industry that PC graphic card companies are always fighting head to head, because that competition is how the technology advances so rapidly. Also, when the current generation of consoles came out, they weren't as good as what was available at the time, now my system, which is upper middle class at best, blows away anything a console does.

The other advantage is the ability to upgrade pieces of my PC to modernized standards without the need to upgrade absolutely everything at once.

Screen resolutions for consoles are a big fat joke as well.

Also, there is no reason to think that consoles can/will/ or want to do some of the things PC's do. We all know it, programming games for a PC is harder than for a console. You have to program with all the options in mind. Ultimately though, this enhances the game even though not everyone may be able to run the newest thing.

And, the fact that consoles become more and more DRM heavy is one of the consoles biggest problems. PC's still stay open ended, consoles like the 3DS can be bricked with the push of a button from Nintendo.

I appreciate everything this video said, but it shows some short sightedness. Is the PC gonna be around forever, of course not, but I don't think we'll see moving on from them in my lifetime. Some of the arguments are the same as to why smartphones are going to trump hand held systems, it's simply not as simple as it's made out to be. The technological advancements necessary to shrink tech down takes longer than to produce new tech that fits into my CPU socket.

All true, but the potential alone is exciting.

OT: I'd embrace the loss of a big metal box in my house, but I'd miss the culture, style and community PC gaming has. Bob, you have missed what we've lost in the move from PCs to the consoles. Ask any one person who only plays on either a console or PC what they think of the other group, and you'd see that we have different tastes, different styles and enjoy different paces. PC gaming tends to be faster, almost more schizophrenic, but also more cerebral given the ability to have up to 80 something hotkeys. Consoles games tend to be paced slower, because of the difficulty with aiming, the properties of the lack of buttons, and because of the lack of buttons, the best games embrace the slower pace and have somewhat more complex combat as a result (just watch professional Halo 3 players). Then we come to the community, which has a much more creative base on the PC because, let's face it, everyone has one. There are still indie games and the like on Xbox Live, but there aren't nearly as many as there are on the PC, not to mention mods. I can't even begin to talk about mods.

PC versus Console is the must unearthly retarded thing ever. A console is a limited pc. Want an rts to work on a console, make a game that lets us hook the USB mouse to the consoles USB port. Ta fn dah, job done, go home, eat, rake in cash, no point in arguing whats better. The simplicity of the console makes it easier and more user friendly which is also the direction OSs are going so eventually there will be no difference. so keep wasting these hours of your life arguing I for one am done
