Pc gaming will never die out as long as there are hardware companies that produce more powerful graphics cards that console will ever have.

Indie developers can also write games for FREE for the PC on any OS. That cannot be said of console games were they must get in touch with the company that produces it.

Think about it, when will consoles move to DX11? They have to make sure the market base is ready to produce games with those requirements. So far the only DX10 games have come out on PC as an experiment to see who will buy them. By the time consoles adopt DX11 will DX12 be out for PCs? Idk but consoles will always lag behind PCs in terms of power.

Also form a price perspective PC games are cheaper than there console brethren. The PC costs almost the same to. (and has more functionality).

In conclusion PC gaming will never die out as long as they can maintain a lead in graphical superiority and the ease of which indie developers can publish content on platforms like steam and stardock.

26 pages of loads of people saying the same things:

i) 1 device is better than many
ii) laptops are PC's
iii) consoles need to become PC's to replace PC's
iv) financially & practically PC gaming is thriving
v) PC's offer control, personalisation, modification, etc
vi) only PC-illegitimates use IE

I can't see many points in favour of Bobs argument, aside from general noises of agreement without much reasoning. Can anyone?

You're great Bob, but this video seems a touch misguided.

This is getting RIDICULOUS...or at least ridiculously LOUD.

I will admit that I am a PC gamer by default rather than choice; I once did attempt to buy a console with my own money, only to have my parents refuse to allow me to connect it. That was annoying.

Call this justification of my inability to own a console (though I now live on my own, I do not own a TV to hook a console up to), but Bob...you're WRONG. To sum things up:

1. Current generation consoles are toys trying to be PC's, not the other way around. Graphics fidelity, software, purpose intent, and user interface all approaching PC standards. Current generation console graphics cards are equivalent to last generation PC graphics cards. Current generation console web surfing and app management is a bandwagon jump of stuff PC's have been doing for some time now. The list goes on...

2. Even if a cloud-capable portable device can match the user input and friendliness of a PC, it will never be as versatile or as DIY-capable (and thus the entire modder community is completely locked out of consoles by design). Defying this would require consoles to be so easy to mod they would lose any real DRM capability (modding a console is one step from cracking it, which is a NO-NO if the machine is supposed to be proprietary to one company), or to make them essentially PC's.

3. Laptops. Just...laptops.

4. If, as you say, technology approaches a point where people can access their games and media through a number of devices all connected to a single hub, is it not too much to suppose that there will be games that are big enough, complex enough, and AWESOME enough that they can ONLY be run on the central hub directly? And why not? Everybody will have such a hub, they just won't be using it as often. In fact, PC's serve this purpose even now; virtually all the outside digital connections in my parent's old house ('old' in the sense that I don't live there any more; my parents are very tech-savvy) are run through a single internet fat pipe. TV, Wi-Fi, the phones, and if they had one, the game console's internet connections would all be run through this one modem setup. And what machine to we use to monitor this device? No points for a correct guess; it's a big, ugly Dell brick that weighs 89 lbs.

5. More love for MMO's, please.

6. Isn't gaming (or at least the hardcore stuff) supposed to be a sedentary activity? Why would you do such a thing on a mobile device?

But then again, I have never played on a console of my own. But what I HAVE done is used an emulator program to play every console game I always wanted to play from generations past. Can a console do that?

Face it; a console is essentially a low-power, single-use optimized PC with a proprietary user interface.

(seriously, can consoles run emulators? I have a friend who only owns an xbox but really wants to play FF7)

So...

Actually it's console-gaming that is dying, or evolving into pc-gaming. Or even, both of them are evolving into something else.

This whole dying thing is not the proper way of talking about it.

Bob. Deliberately trying to provoke strong reactions by choosing terminology that pushes the nerve endings of your target audience is a bad thing.

By glossing over the wealth of customisability unique to PC gaming, along with it's superior computing power your statement doesn't reflect the entire issue. For a show called "The Big Picture", that's kind of an no-no don't you think?

I'd like to point out that PC gaming unlikely to ever die exactly because a reason you mentioned. You're using a PC to render and edit your shows, right? You mentioned as much yourself. Now, do you think that when the tablet pc can finally do that at a non-slowass pace, there won't be something else that'll require computing power higher than what that generation's tablets can provide? Rendering YouTube3D videos for example? People will always have a need for something that's ahead of the curve. Something they can keep ahead of the curve by slotting out a few choice parts every year. And as long as that's true, there'll be games to take advantage of that power.

Also, one could argue that once consoles have its OS limitations removed and you can run your Office on there, it's essentially become a PC. That big place where your PC used to sit? That's now relocated to your TV and your Xbox, as much of a shrine as your desk and case ever were.

PC gaming isn't dead. Evolving maybe, sure. Dead? No, never. Meanwhile, trying to grab the attention of the public with a big red sticker saying THE END OF THE WORLD is not doing the gaming community as a whole any favours. If you want to argue something, argue that PC and Console are merging into one entity. Don't scare off anyone with overly broad statements like you did. I used to think of you as an intelligent person with intelligent opinions. I guess I was wrong.

Personally, I bought an Xbox360 because I didn't want to spend $700 for a high-end gaming PC like my girlfriend did when I could pay $200 and still play the games I wanted to play. Of course, her PC runs faster and smoother, and she can play MMOs, RTSs, and games where you get to play god like The Sims and Spore, but none of those things were really worth an extra $500 to me. I can't think of any advantages of a gaming PC that make me want to spend that much more money.

It just seems like there won't be as much incentive in the future to buy a gaming PC if most games are released on multiple platforms, and if consoles support office programs and internet browsers then there won't really be a need for most people to buy a non-gaming PC. In a hurting economy like ours, I wouldn't be surprised to see more people go for the cost-effective option, which is the console.

Although, if technology keeps advancing like it has been, eventually every device will be able to do everything, so the distinction between PC and console will become hardly noticeable. Maybe the Xbox and PlayStation will start having better mouse and keyboard support so they can start making RTSs for those too. Who knows? We'll just have to wait and see.

Hardware superiority for the win.

PC gaming will never be dead as long as there are modding communities and companies like Valve, Crytek and the like. Also try to port STALKER and all of it's buggy features and mods on a console. Also, Activision sucks.

But seriously, Internet Explorer? Bob I mean come on I can't even take you seriously no more. Seriously.

PC gaming will eventually die when our generation dies....just like Bridge will pass with my grandmother.

On a more cynical note it's type of gaming that developers, for probably for the most part publishers, want to see go away. Why? Well most PC games can be cracked, hacked, patched, torrented, and modded basically making whole new games out of user-developed content (and cutting out the possible profits publishers can make). Just even look at Oblivion, or Fallout 3, or STALKER.

I do agree with you though MovieBob, it's a genre in the medium that isn't going to be supported by anyone but the fans. Who knows, maybe that means it'll spin off into a really cool direction...but judging on what usually spawns from the internet it probably won't. What I think it could morph into, though, if console makers allow (which is a loooooooooooong shot) is if those modding tools and such make the jump to those platforms you could see a Renaissance for what made PC gaming so great.

Some good points but I would argue that all game platforms including the PC are going to take a big shift in the next few years. As the role of the PC is being reduced, the PC will change, but then this too is happening in consoles.
What will the next gen of consoles be?
Hit you with super HD graphics? Well I don't think anyone with a Wii care about that, and the boat already sailed for the 'buy this console as it has better graphics then are previous generation' marketing campaign.

Bob, your opinion on Movies is great, but you really don't get it do you? You talk a lot about how tons of other toys can do what the PC does, you even make a joke about how you can do what the PC can do with three different things...three...different...things. Your opinion is rubbish, please don't hoist it on us.

So wait, Bob. You're saying we won't need PCs anymore in the future because the consoles will become computers? I'm not with you on this one, sorry. I usually am, but honestly, this is stupid. Hope you're trolling.

Gah!
Hazah! this to its fullest extent! (I even got shogun 2 yesterday :D) This better explains my previous rant in a non banning mannor, i like it
Diablo 3 may not be on that list ultimately: http://www.g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/711050/blizzard-teases-diablo-3-on-consoles-pc-gamers-around-the-world-mourn/
Really???? NOOOOOOO!!!! It has always been a PC only game though... Ohwell, there are many other great titles in that list
Don't be an asshole, the more people enjoy the game the better. And it's developed for the PC in mind so don't worry, Blizzard won't screw it's biggest audience.

Some major points not observed by Bob:
1- Even thought we got several new toys like iphones, ipads, netbooks, laptops, etc, we keep accumulating formats, not throwing out out old ones, even desktop computers will always have a use for some users. Mouse + keyborad set ups will also be relevant for games in the future
2- PC game is wildly popular, but the major hits, like WoW or Starcraft exist only because they are more impervious to the big white elephant in the room, PIRACY. Console gamers are in general less technologically savvy, or less inclined to pirate their games, pc gamers however, might as well just wear an eyepatch everyday, trust me, I am one,... I love steam, but still...
Actually Console gamers do pirate a lot they just pay someone to do it for them. Everyone I know who has ever pirated on console pays for their console to be chipped then buys games off that person. So that one download is more like 10 downloads for that one person. Since it is piracy you can't say that on a broad scale but that is how most console gamers I know who pirate pirate.
Your definatly right on how console gamers pirate games is very different and the way they do it makes it impossible to get accurate numbers. For the PC you can just look and go oh wow 4 million downloads, but for the console even one download could be burnt and sold 1000 times at your local corner store run by that east indian guy. I know that sounds racist but most of those small stores around where I live actually sell burnt dvds and games.

I actually bought my wii used and the store owner asked if I wanted the one with the mod chip in it or not and said if I ever wanted any pirated games he can get anything for $5 a piece. I remember back during the ps1/2 era there were signs that said we mod chip consoles on the windows of alot of electronic stores. Not to mention the fact that the way the ps3 is set up it makes it so very easy for 4 people to pitch in and buy a game/dlc from the psn store and download it on all their systems. Infact me and my friends do exactly that with the cod map packs.
Always kinda annoys me when people annoy this fact and only look at downloads for console pirate levels. Also wasn't there an article here saying about 1mil modded xbox were banned for working or XBL. Something along those lines anyway.

Thought I should share this:

Ever wondered why consoles are called consoles and not computers?
When the term "video game console" was coined, console had a certain meaning (copied from the Merriam-Webster Dictionary):
"a combination of readouts or displays and an input device (as a keyboard or switches) by which an operator can monitor and interact with a system (as a computer or dubber)"
It was called like that because the console merely provided electricity to and displayed the output of the game cartridge.
This means that consoles weren't really consoles once the parts that used to be in the cartridge moved to the console itself.
If you look at it this way then consoles died in the late 90s.

Redefine words to mean what you think.

Lovely.

I'd love to think that you just created this for page views, out of spite, because most of the reviewers have their own little hate pad against computers.

I know this isn't true though. You've just redefined all the words. Whee. That's nice. And added a disclaimer that if anyone flames, you're right as well.

I'm not going to get angry, because the writing on the wall's been there for some time. You work on PCs, you play on consoles, so because you hate work, you have to differentiate them.

Comfort over Versatility. Sad. Maybe it's all just for page views though? Part of me wishes it was just a troll attempt.

Here's the Little Picture: [HEADING=3] Consoles are becoming PCs.[/HEADING]

This.

I really enjoy Movie Bob's movies. It's sad how often I quote him. I've heard that he sometimes does/says things for a knee jerk reaction, but I have never really seen evidence of that until now. I can't say I find much of value in this video outside of blatant speculation with an overtone of pointless jabs at the PC fans he knows are listening. Why should people be labeled as incoherent animals just because they don't agree with your personal vision of the future?

I am not a PC fanatic, I am a gaming enthusiast as a whole. I play everything from PC, down to board games, so I don't feel this is one-sided ranting. I echo what has already been said many times, that consoles are becoming PC's, not the other way around. PC's are capable of a /multitude/ of things that no other piece of machinery can really manage. So to say the future of PC gaming is dim seems strange to me. Sure, they may get smaller. More compact and efficient. But isn't that leap being made from the other direction by consoles? They have browsers now. Hard drive space. They take up a chunk of entertainment system space, have hand-held peripherals. (And are getting larger, not smaller, as opposed to PC's) You have to sit in one place to play them efficiently. (Or stand, in a few cases.)

Consoles get closer to PC's in function and price day by day.

All in all Bob, sorry. But I feel this was a little low brow.
