Eh, I have no real issue with Disney buying Lucasarts... other than concerns about how the next movie(s) is going to turn out. Then again, they probably mean to market it more to kids than the... other fanbase...

I just really...really...REALLY hope that rumor about Darth Vader coming back for Episode VII is a load of bullshit.

Re: the Expanded Universe being garbage, didn't the Thrawn trilogy sell pretty well and wasn't it well regarded? "The Secret History of Star Wars" credits it with rekindling interest in the Star Wars franchise in the 90s (don't know how reliable that book is though). On the other hand this led to the prequels, so.. Anyway, adapting the Thrawn trilogy seems like a possibility since the story has been proven to work once and it's neatly divided into three parts. But I hope they will go with a completely new story and blow us away.
Well, just to bring in that other space franchise Star Trek, after Star Trek: The (lack of) Motion Picture kind of tanked, Paramount moved Gene Rodenbery upstairs to an executive producer role and we got the, IMO, best Star Trek movie when Wrath of Khan came out.

Bob: Hate to disagree with you, but the EU books did have a rigorous process of what could and could not be written in the later years after the Zahn Thrawn Trilogy and Duology and M.A. Stackpole/Aaron Allston's Rogue Squadron series that ultimately was decided and semi-directed by Lucasarts and sometimes Lucas himself. I spoke with quite a few writers who've been part of the EU and they said it was hard writing within the confines of Lucasarts' view of Star Wars Canon because a lot of their ideas would be edited out from higher ups.
Of course Disney has every right to throw that stuff to the wind and piss off the fanbase of that era or they can go in a different direction and we can just have a divide like the Star Trek/JJ Abrams Trek universe fanbase.
It'll happen, no one will care and Disney will print money.

With this next movie, I really hope that it follows Rogue Squadron or they create a new set of characters and do something cool. I would really dislike if they got new actors for the main characters and just made stuff up ( JJ Abrams...) as that may be cool or artistic or some other thing that I don't care about, but I don't like remakes.
wow i can't believe it but bob actually made me feel a bit more optimistic about the future of the franchise, and i sincerely hope that they completely ignore the expanded universe as 99% of it is the most awful kind of fan fic.

One thing that should be pointed out, as Bob mentioned that Disney didn't spend all that money for the small user base that is the EU property, with Bioware's Old Republic setting the user base is even smaller. Going by sales figures, from what I could dig up it's something like 2 million Old Republic sales vs a combined 15 million for the EU trilogy immediately following Star Wars, that featured Grand Admiral Thrawn as the villain whom anyone who read these books all know and love.
Meh, so now Disney is going to be milking the franchise instead of Lucas. I?m sure they will make some competent films but that?s about it. For me, the magic is gone and Star Wars is done. It was played out with Return of the Jedi and then irreparably damaged by the prequels and crappy merchandise and tie-ins; nothing short of a miracle is going to bring that back.

I hope they completely disregard the EU books. The spiderweb of Star Wars continuity is a mess, only slightly more accessible than comic book superhero continuity from my perspective. If Disney needs to color in between those lines, episode VII will be a mess.
Avengers disregarded comic book continuity, and it was awesome. Hopefully Disney realizes this and gives Star Wars the same treatment. Set it a generation or two after VI, bring back the old actors in cameo roles, and tell us the fresh story of the power vacuum left in the wake of the Emperor's death and how the Rebellion deals with that.

Lot of good jokes in this one. Being a history BA, who specialized in African American history, I actually laughed aloud at the joke about Disney's, let's call it a foray, into "The Songs of the South".
Yeah, pretty much. Parts of the EU are more important than Bob implied, though it is funny that he used an image of Splinter of the Mind's Eye in reference to it. That particular book is about as 'uncanon' as it gets when it comes to Star Wars EU, considering in it...Milanezi said:

On another note, my reaction to the whole thing was pretty much the same as Bob: Disney took good care of Marvel, so there's no reason they won't do the same to Lucasfilm
Bob actually made me feel excited about this whole deal and the idea of new movies being separate from the EU. After I read some synopses of the EU events I just felt depressed. They beat the Empire and then its just a century of the galaxy being a very shit place to be with a new crisis every year or so. Kinda sucks to think about. At least a new trilogy wouldn't be so saturated as the EU.
Except that, if you look up the book on Wikipedia or elsewhere, it's actually listed as "C-canon" which, by the rules of Star Wars canon, makes it just as much a part of the continuity as the Thrawn books. That's what I meant in my previous post about the continuity being such a mess: Almost everything done with Star Wars printed on the cover is considered canon. Even Splinter of the Mind's Eye, which was meant as a low-budget sequel to the original film if it hadn't been the blockbuster that it was.simmeh said:
