So it's basically Saint Seiya + TMNT...? I can picture the thought process that went into this: "Hrrrmmm, but how are we going to make this American cartoon appeal to our young'uns?"
"Easy boss! Just take one of the most popular shows of yesteryear and fuse them together!"
"MY GOD! YOU'RE A GENIUS!"

And thus, the TMNT anime.

OT: Having never been a turtles fan, forgive my dull enthusiasm. I guess I was never really sold on it because of the name. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Say it out loud and tell me it doesn't sound ridiculous. It's the same reason I never watched Biker Mice from Mars, because the name wasn't intriguing, catchy or interesting to me. I'm sure if I watched these, I might like them, heck, Pun heavy humour and mild violence are in Digimon so I guess I would like them, but it's that name. That damn name.

It's like going out with a girl who's called Arnold Schwarzenegger. It doesn't seem real, but it is and is awkward as hell.

See, you just needed to be brainwashed. They repeated "Biker Mice From Mars" several times in the intro. It turned your on/off switch to "off" so the puns hit that much harder. Let's go watch Mobile Suit Gundam the 08th MS team together! We can be snarky and difficult, and trade socially awkward quips about stuff that's only in our own individual heads that the other person isn't going to get! It'll be like prom with that girl I didn't ask to go with, but somehow ended up making out with under the bleachers and went over bra, only to get smacked in the face for my boldness. I bought her an omelet after. I drank a milkshake and felt weird when she started talking to her friends at he next table. I paid the bill, left, and went on to be hired randomly by NERV to clean up Eva fluid, after 01 was launched. Damn. Sometimes I wonder if my AT field is on at all...*tap* *tap* Hello? AT field? I'm making strange references that people will Google and pretend to get! Help! What the hell is going on? Why does 01 produce so much fluid? Does Movie Bob know where the live action version of Evangelion is? hahaha! No seriously Bob. What's the haps on the live-action Eva movie?

Holy crap, I remember owning some of those limited release TMNT toys. I should go find them and see what they go for on E-Bay. I even remember seeing those videos. NOSTALGIA!

But the turtles DID use their weapons in the cartoon, and if you shopped the gunmetal innards of the foot clan robots to red gore it'd be a damn bloody cartoon. And you know what? The turtles, or Raph at least, didn't seem to have a problem with splitting someone open, because it wasn't until after he eviscerated a foot clan robot that they found out that their opponents weren't flesh and blood.

It wasn't just anime that got away with a whole bunch of stuff back in the day.

We really need an American/Japan animation exchange program. I know a lot of American action cartoons are already getting remade into a more anime style, so let Japan take a crack at remaking The Flintstones while Warner Bros. goes and gives us a fresh spin on Elfen Lied or something equally dark, gory, and sexually disturbing (too many examples to list here).

The turtle anime stayed truer to the series than the last 3 seasons of the show believe it or not.

I'm rather surprised to see that April was still wearing the yellow jumpsuit. I figured she'd get a battle-bikini or something in an anime version.

Also, I wholeheartedly agree with the need for a Samurai Pizza Cats episode. I loved that show as a kid. I know it wasn't really all that good (tried watching two episodes as an adult), but it still holds a special place in my heart. And I still like to occasionally sing the theme song.
