One of the better mythos-based television stories out there, actually. I know I watched the episode as a kid and probably liked it (come on, big squid monster gets zapped, that's great TV), but then I saw it when I was older and suddenly I caught the casual references to things like the Eltdown Shards and a character called "Alice Derleth".

And it was awesome.

Ah yes, the big picture which deals with such amazing topics as comic arcs that sucked and cartoon obscure trivia!

Really mate, to do this sort of stuff, just ask for a column and include it there, but if you are going to talk about the "Big Picture" I expect things that are a lot more prominent in our current society looked from another perspective that may seem to be underlooked, as in, dare I say it, looking at the big picture than what amounts to a geek column.

My thoughts exactly. I still like the videos, but for something called "The Big Picture" it sure deals with some awfully trivial matters. Now if he'd be using them to prove a bigger point, like with the Spiderman continuity thing, I would get it, but he doesn't do that lately.

I was hoping this would be the story of Straczynski's struggles with misogynist producers, and how it related to the state-enforced conformist messages in cartoons of the time which had its origination in Seduction of the Innocents, and its impact on EC Comics which became a rallying point in the war against Tailgunner Joe, as well as the origin of modern satire, etc., etc.. Did Bob do that one already?

I loved watching The Real Ghostbusters back in the nineties. And as for "Ghostbusters?" I much prefer Scooby Doo.

Thanks for doing a video on this. I was always a little vague on it, even when I looked it up as I saw all those weird "Ghostbusters" cartoon DVDs coming out a couple years ago. I was born ever so slightly too late to know about the fake ghostbusters, but I did see The Real Ghostbusters, as well as the surprisingly compelling Extreme Ghostbusters when I was a teenager. Now there's a show that needs a quality rerelease. The Escapist is fast becoming The Moviebob and I like this very much.

Heres a tip, Bob; People like your "COMICS ARE WEIRD" episodes because they sort of really are, we like to hear about them, have them explained. We dont just like them because you stick "COMICS ARE WEIRD" with a deep voice in the episode.

Stop trying to do that with everything.

I'm pretty sure he thinks it's weird thanks to the naming concessions forcing a movie tie in TV series to be named differently than the movie it's tied to. He also explained why, which made it seem much less weird.

I enjoyed watching reruns of F Troop, I don't remember The Ghostbusters, or Ghostbusters(series), but I did enjoy Ghostbusters(movie) and The Real Ghostbusters. I didn't really have a chance to watch Extreme Ghostbusters.

Wow, I thought that was just a case of the producers half hazzardly liscening away the creation of a cartoon, only to realize the mistake they made and created the "real" cartoon to stop a riot.

I remember that experience, sitting down to watch Ghostbusters only to be disappointed by a presentation of the Filmation version. I wouldn't be surprised if the Filmation version received more broadcast time due to similar confusion by network scheduling.

hmm and here i had thought for years that "the ghostbusters" was the old original and that it and its cartoon had then been re-adapted into the "ghostbusters" movie taking little from the original. Only now i see that they really had nothing to do with one another but a name and that "the ghostbusters" cartoon had in fact came after the movie.

hum... no one really saw the "ghost busters" right??

because... well... it wasnt bad, it was actually quite amazing

as a kid i forgot about it, but after seing the vid, i remembered a lot of things about those guys

one of the things i remembered is that when they did the "real ghost busters" i was "WTH is this??, where is the elevator!? the gorilla!? the TALKING PHONE!?!?!?"

although in that time, i never really placed the movie and the cartoon side by side...

yeah... i liked that show...

Nothing new. Look at the mega movie hits of the 80-90's anytime someone was making a disaster movie two other studios made disaster movies...meteors, alien creatures deep in the ocean...


But to be honest that steaming pile of live action foolishness in 75, I'm amazed the entire team responsible for it wasn't found in their garages with the engine running. It was sad, but since it had a catchy title that could have been used later...they cash in on it.

And must admit as a kid at the time don't recall a single kid wanting or owning any of the Ghostbuster figures....i mean it was real lame. And like putting Starwars next to flash Gordon (40's serial not even the newer one)

If you ever come back to revisit Ghostbusters, a fun little tangent to talk about is the lingering belief that Bill Murray went out of his way to sabotage the Real Ghostbusters when he discovered that the Venkman from the show, played by Lorenzo Music, sounded too much like him.
