The big question: is the Switch now worth it?

I'm pretty much sold on the system after E3 (Mario XCOM? Metroid Prime 4 eventually? On top of Xenoblade and Zelda? Yesss. This on top of Portable Sonic Mania and Stardew Valley and probably that neat looking advance wars thing that Chucklefish is doing? Very yes.)

I'm just iffy about buying it out here in Quebec City where a) I will likely have to go like an hour out of my way to find one, and b) I don't have access to a large TV for Console mode.

I'll pick one up in October most likely, when I get back home to Montreal.

Splatoon 2 alone is enough reason to buy a Switch. Mario Odyssey Xenoblade 2, Metroid Prime 4 and the first full fledged console Pokemon RPG coming out on the system soon too as well only provides and even stronger case for the system.

In my opinion, no, unless you really want to play Breath of the Wild handheld.

Needs a slight price cut and more games (Mario Odyssey) before I buy it. That said, the Switch is the best hardware they've made in years. It's actually powerful (for a handheld).

I get a lot of use out of my Switch, but I think part and parcel of that is I']m a pretty social gamer. Board games are my jam, principally. And primarily the reason for that is actual human contact with people I would like to hang out with or at least get on amicably with to share a moment.

But that being said, that's not everyone. And I'd definitely wait abut 4-5 more months. There's some pretty great games, and as a portable it works phenomenally. But there's a high buy in point at the moment, and realistically speaking Zelda is the only game I can reasonably say I've sunk more than 60 hours into. And yeah, I get it ... great games need not have such massive time spans of longevity, etc. But ditto you still want those long games to feel like you're getting your money's worth.
'
Xenoblade XC was both a phenomenal game and one you could happily sink hundreds of hours into, as is Monster Hunter, as is plenty of games like it ... Ze;da is the only game I can think of that gives you that on the Switch, right up until we get that Xenoblade and a new Monster Hunter.

The fucking gall of releasing the MH as Japan only ... gah, it's like Capcom doesn't even want myu money that I'll simply have to rote learn Japanese text to play it ... That's not a massive hurdle, but it's an annoying one. Because Monster Hunter to me is one of those 'definitive' portable games. And a Monster Hunter on the Switch? I know some friends will make the jump for that alone, just for social gaming meet ups like local co-op before our pen and paper group starts.

I say give it a few more months. I honestly think it will be a stellar console, just make sure to buy a decent portable recharger as 4 hour battery life playing Zelda aint going to cover you on a plane trip or the like.

I'll admit the prospect has been tempting on a few occasions, but so far I've been holding off on getting one due to lack of games. This isn't solely a Nintendo issue, mind you. Modern game development has become so costly and time-consuming that you're lucky to get more than two "system seller" titles for consoles in the first year.
I guess so. I have a feeling the PS4 will have the best selection of all the consoles by the end of its lifespan. Time will tell.

Yeah, they seem to not really have their best foot forward nowadays. I mean we all remember fondly such grand launch titles of this generation as Ryse, Killzone Shadow Fall, Knack.

Dead Rising 3 and inFamous : Second Son get the occasional mention, I suppose.

You have to get up to Bloodborne (2 years after the PS4), and I don't know offhand what similarly generally-acclaimed title for the Xbone would be (Titanfall 1??? That was about a year in. OR Halo 5 I guess which was similarly 2 years in).

Did they ever have their best foot forward? How many generations back do we have to go to find a really awesome launch lineup? Nintendo had a run with the Nes/Snes/and N64 lineups, but how many people remember the PS1 lineup? Virtual fighter and Rayman 1, or the Sega genesis US launch lineup with a measly 6 games, altered Beast being the only one I even remember playing out of the bunch. It seems like we had Nintendo with a good track record in 90's (or a little into the 80's too if duck hunt and excite bike were your thing) when they dominated the market but given the number of generations before and after that period it seems more like an exception to have a truly remarkable launch lineup within the first year rather than any sort of norm.

Sunshine already did.
You should hate Sunshine because Yoshi in that game is freakin Useless on water. I still have PTSD over that one moment of jumping on Boats with a Yoshi...
at least he's even in Sunshine unlike in Galaxy. well except for his head.

Depends on if there's a game/enough games you want on it, frankly. For me, personally, it's pretty worthless right now - Zelda's on the Wii U, I was never into Splatoon and I've got a DS if I want to play games portably. Depending on what the deal is with this new Pokemon I *may* get one, but given all the information about it is 'Hey, it's a main-line Pokemon game on a console', I'm not really in any rush. My Gamecube still works, I can play Colosseum and XD just fine in the meantime.

Give it like, a year or two, when the library is a little meatier and when they've probably released an updated console that fixes some of the Switches problems.

Nah, Nintendo hasn't made a good console since the Super Nintendo when they were at the top of their game. Nintendo knows it as well. They are still banking on that nostalgia, still over price 20+ year old games on their virtual service and pretty much all of their IPs are from the nes/snes period.

As for portability I don't play games in public as I don't want people to think I'm a geek. Instead I just autistically stare at my phone like everyone else. The Switch does have Breath of the Wild which is a game I really would like to play but that's pretty much it.

But seeing as I give zero shits about handheld gaming I'd find it hard to spend my money on one.
The 3DS is really cheap now and has a fair amount of decent Nintendo games both new and old(A Link Between Worlds, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Star Fox 64, lots of nes and snes classics). A lot of Nintendo goodness that takes up no space.

Galaxy 2 is better than Galaxy but Sunshine is still better than both of them.

Do you have a family that's going to want to play Mario Kart like mine? If so, I'd give a hesitant yes. If not, I suggest wait a little longer.
