...by shock I mean a moment so suprising or so jaw-droppingly astounding that you have to set the controller down and walk away, just to take a breath.

...and by scare I mean, your nerves are on fire and you've possibly hid under the covers in terror after throwing your controller across the room. :)

My vote goes to the "closet scare" in the 1st CONDEMNED game for 360. It was the middle of the day in my basement when I got to that part and it made me do all of the things I described above, also my girlfriend knocked on the basement window closest to me just as this happened which only served to fry my nerves for the rest of the course of that game.

But enough about me, what is your personal Biggest Shock and, or Scare in a game?

I cannot say I've ever been surprised that badly by a game, but then again, I am a wuss that does not play scary games.

I was playing Fallout 3 with an extra dark nights+rain mod on.

I'm walking in the middle of the wasteland, all out of night vision, when the lightning flashes and reveals a fucking Yao Guai leaping at me.

I'm going to have to go with Condemned 2 actually. I was watching my ex-bf play it, and I was doing fine until that unholy bear. I was screaming through the whole chase after it crashed through the wall. I used to laugh at him when he jumped in SH3, so needless to say I still haven't lived it down.

When I first opened and played Legendary, it scared me shitless. After reading all the good previews game magazines gave it, I came to one conclusion: every single game critic and editor must have brain cancer to even think of speaking of this game, let alone saying it was going to be great.

It was quite a shock.

Um... I have a really useless memory (came close to misspelling that as mammary, by the way), so I can't think of anything in particular. However, I was playing the new Splinter Cell game today, and it has an in-game achievement system. Usually, you unlock these after doing something like stealth killing an enemy or scoring a headshot. One of them, however, is awarded for remaining undetected for ten minutes after vanishing. Therefore, as I was playing normally, about to grab someone from behind and kill them, the unlock sound effect played and a large box appeared on my screen. I went a few inches into the air at that point. Luckily, however, I didn't do anything stupid in the game, but I felt kind of silly for freaking out so much. Stealth games just make me paranoid that way.

Ever play STALKER: Shadows of Chernobyl? Well, true to the name, some of the creatures stalk you to an extent.

I realized the truth behind the developers promises deep within a sewer system. After tearing through a group of mercs/looters, I came to loath the quiet. All that could be heard was the dripping of distant leaks, the scuttling of tiny creatures. Every now and then, I'd hear footsteps. Every now and then, I'd open the dark with my shoddy flashlight. I'd find nothing.

Eventually, I came upon a well-lit room. I could see pretty much everything, and I was slightly relieved.

Footsteps.

Wary, I stepped into the room and perched in the corner, looking back from whence I came.

Footsteps.

I stared into the shadow and found two white motes of light glittering in the darkness, staring back. Curious, and startled, I opened fire. After emptying half a clip, I found the bullets had been wasted on the ground.

I crept through the green glow of the room, watching my surroundings with blood-shot eyes. I heard the pitter-patter of footsteps once more, and spun around. Face-to-face I saw those glittering eyes, held by a grotesque face. An unholy beast with tendrils for a mouth, wailed in anger, and lashed out at me.

Much running-and-gunning later, I stood victorious over the beasts body. Bloodied and beaten, I moved on.

In Bioshock, near the beginning, there's an area when I'm walking through waist-deep water, and I see on the wall in the room ahead a shadow of what looks like a splicer tearing through a body. She begins to speak in the unsettling and mind-fuck inducing manner that most splicers do, and I, ready for one hell of an opportunity (c'mon, take out an unsuspecting splicer? Badass all around.), take out and check my tommy gun. As I creep towards the entrance of the room, I edge towards the left wall so I'll be able to see her before she sees me. Then suddenly...

*click*

The fucking lights go out, and I lose it. Running backwards, I'm spraying ammo everywhere, with only the flash of the muzzle to light my way. Turns out it was a scare tactic, the splicer didn't actually exist, it was SUPPOSED to scare the shit out of me. So, in the spirit of getting the shit scared out of me, and shooting into the unknown at absolutely nothing, I present this visual representation of my freak-out

EDIT: there's also that part in the dentist's office...Bioshock players know what I'm talking about. Luckily, I had shotgun equipped, but I still had to take a few deeeep breaths before I moved on after that.

In Island of the Dead (a mod for AvP2) it just got too freaky, I closed the game and watched movies instead.

I've had my share of jump-scares during Oblivion and Fallout 3. I still remember my first encounter with that bandit between the Imperial city and Chorrol...

Bandit: *jumps out* "Your money or your li-"
Me: "AAAAAAH! AAAAAAH! AAAAAH! AAAAAAAH! AAAAAH!" *gasps for breath; waits two minutes to calm down* "...No." *attacks*

Still, my absolute biggest scare was when I was a little kid. I think I was... six years old, at most. I was sitting on my aunt's lap while she played "Lost Secret of the Rainforest", as I hadn't really gotten around to actually PLAYING games yet. It got to 0:55 of this video...

...And I let out an ear-piercing shriek as I turned around and climbed clear over my aunt and bolted out of the room. Sure, I had calmed down and wanted to go back five minutes later, but even so, it is the one and only time when a game has ever made me run from the room, let alone clammor over another person!

First game I was ever scared in? When I was younger playing a lightgun game in an arcade, something about underwater treasures and HUGE eels and stuff, oh and again when I was younger (around 12 or so?), the Shadow temple in OoT. I couldn't bring myself to go in the well, and only manned up and finished it a few years back.

More recently? Dead Space! The whole first scene running from the monsters, and one tears open the elevator doors. Dear god did I scream like a little girl. That game is excellent, even when you start to get used to the scares of the bad guys (and then again once you're used to them in a vacuum), especially because the end boss creeped me out big time.

But right now I'm playing through Call of Cthulu: Dark Corners of the Earth. Need I say more?

Had a very similiar experience at the end of the first sewer system you have to go into. Fought my way through a bunch of mercs, jumped out of my seat as an invisible monster started tearing my face off. Managed to defeat it, just barely and start dragging my bleeding ass to the exit.

Round the corner to where the map shows the exit is, and this...thing emerges from around the corner. The moment you make eye contact with it, there's this inhuman scream and your vision starts zooming in and out, going really blurry and freaky. You have to try and kill this hell-demon/mutant thing whilst its raping your brain and charging towards you...needless to say I died and stopped playing the game in fear.

Those damn dogs that jump through the windows in resident evil.
I played the remake for Gamecube and I remember after I used some herbicide to kill some plant-thingy I walked through this (Usually totally silent) hallway when three zombies burst through the windows, almost gave me a friggn' heart attack. I ran my ass out of there.

And the part where you get the shotgun. You see it sitting there, all shiny and awesome, yours for the taking right? WRONG! The lights go out save for a small patch of light and you get ambushed by splicers, not to mention that the shotgun only has two shells in it. O_O

There's also a lot of creepy hidden rooms in Fort Frolic where Splicers like to sneak up on you.

Yep, that's the part I was referring to!
I was so startled I literally flipped the controller out of my hand by accident.

Well played Resident Evil, well played.

Jesus christ; Silent Hill 2

When at the rooftop at the hospital, where you can pick up the notebook at the corner

that scared me shitless, I was playing with a friend, I started yelling, he was like 'what?' then looked at the screen and joined me in the screaming
