There is no link between non-linearity and violence in computer games. I think the OP is confusing the two.

I think that it is mostly the desire to do violent things that you couldn't normally do in a consequence free environment. There are times that I do want to slam into the back of someones car when they are driving super slow. I'm not going to do that in real life for various reasons, but in the video-game world I can do it guilt and consequence free.

I don't think the OP was suggesting that all sandbox games are necessarily non-linear. Though yeah, it was implied, since he never mentioned violent games specifically in the body text. :/

You have to admit, though, that most popular games are violent, and that non-linear games are no exception.

Basicly why do people like running riot in GTA games by faviourat being gta vice going round with a minigun or katana making people loose there heads :p
its fun cause you know you could never do that in real life, now all we need is a realist gory virtion and it would be amazing go around dismembering random people and then playing with there internal organs, hahahahha......does that make me a bad person:S

Well dead rising was a hell of alot of fun, just the freedom to go anywhere and use whatever there was was to take on hordes of zombies was great fun. Sandbox is fun for those reasons, no constraints and no linearity.
