the wolf thing is the only thing that put me off going to see that movie, wolfs have been brought to the edge of extinction so many times due to peoples misjudgment about them
They're opportunistic predators who have been known to prey on livestock and other farm animals (which are some people's livelihood), and even occasionally attack humans (most commonly, smaller humans such as children). They are dangerous, wild animals and you're kidding yourself if you think otherwise. I'm not justifying excessive wasteful hunting, but going out and eliminating problem-wolves who are threatening property and lives? That's perfectly fine.
Honestly, the same thing happened with Alligators a while back. People over-hunted them because of problem gators (and their hides), and they were nearly extinct. Now they've more than made a comeback, same with the Grey Wolf, which was recently removed from the endangered species list. Put some reasonable hunting regulations in place and wolves are fine.
also it seems kind of lazy. I mean instead of making human error and the harsh environment the danger, which could expanded the characters and bring about interesting scenes of mistrust and betrayal etc. instead just wolfs attacking people.
It's a barren, frozen wasteland. It isn't like they're stranded on a tropical island where there's all kinds of interesting scenery and wildlife to support the human cast. There's snow, mountains, some trees and wolves... and people trudging through the snow for 2 hours is not an interesting movie. It's not like Lord of the Flies where they can dig in and try to survive there indefinitely, they need to keep moving or they freeze to death. It generally takes time for humans to start going crazy and turning on each other. A group stranded out in that kind of terrain would be long-dead before they had to worry about that.
Wolves are one of my favorite animals... Not to mention they are misunderstood and were hunted to near extinction.
Boohoo, so were alligators, and like alligators grey wolves have made enough of a comeback to not be endangered anymore.
