So, it's pretty obvious, the general consensus here is that Call of Duty is shit, never changing, etc.
But, it seems that a lot of the hate is because it ushered in a new era of shooters, which is obviously "modern games (Homefront, MoH, etc.)
But, how is this Call of Duty's fault? It seems that Call of Duty is getting hate because it found something that works, and other companies wanted to emulate that.
Don't get me wrong, I see where most of the other hate comes from, that it's the same game every year (I get, but don't agree,) that apparently it's about how America is FUCK YEAH (The main character is Scottish I think,) etc.
But why are people hating because it's successful? Is it because it's the cool thing to do?
Yes. Yes, that's it exactly. I hate CoD because it's successful and hating successful things is cool. It's obvious you're grasping at straws here (for whatever reason), but when what you're grasping at is so retarded that anyone with half a brain would know it's not true you should have just skipped the pretense of dishonest interest in what others think and made your opening post more truthful. Like: "I know CoD is the greatest game franchise in the universe, but I hear a lot of people think it's shit, so I'm going to pretend to care for a moment and listen to why you think that while I snicker from upon my throne of hideous graphics and crappy single player campaigns I love so much."
If you bothered to stop being so reactionary and insecure for 2 seconds you'd have realised that he was more just thinking out loud than making the blanket statement 'HURR DURR CoD IS TEH AW3SOME!1!one!! IF U NO LIK CoD U IS TEH HIPSTER LOLOLOLOLOLOL!!1!!one!11!eleven

Now I'm not the biggest fan of CoD by any means but I actually think the OP has a point that a lot of the repeated reasons for disliking it don't hold up that much on closer inspection.

'Everyone copies CoD.' Well it's not like Activision asks them to.

'CoD doesn't innovate.' Funny that. When CoD releases what might as well be the same game time after time it's 'ruining the industry' but I guess when Nintendo do it with all their major IP's it's just good business practice? How many of these people also heap scorn on Sega for doing exactly the opposite and trying to make each Sonic game distinguishable from the last? (not that I'm a fan of Sonic either, but just sayin')

'The community is shit.' While this may be true it's another problem that is 1) Not the fault of the game itself, and 2) A problem shared by several other games don't get half as much hate as CoD does for it. Also, you do realise you can just mute other players you know?

'Bobby Kotic is Devil Spawn.' While I disagree with many of his business practices, unless you've actually met the man you don't know him from Adam. For all you know none of the decisions his company has made that have led you to hate him so much were actually his idea in the first place.

'CoD is too pro US.' Which of course is why the majority of the main 'good guys' so far have been British, while the US military is frequently depicted as incompetent and the main 'Bad Guy' of MW2 was a US Army general. Yeah, makes sense.

I actually enjoy Call of Duty in numerous instances. I think the Campaign is all-around good fun in most of the installments. The current console generation installments all have bearable storylines, tight gameplay, and with reasonably strong anti-war themes (not as much in Black Ops I've noticed). The variety of environments, scenarios, and gameplay is very compelling, but has faded a bit with time in my opinion. Call of Duty 4 did variety the best I think, from Stealthy Special Ops, to All out Open warfare, and to the beloved AC130 mission (which delivered unique, fun gameplay, and also delivered on the emotional aspects of such a real-life scenario.) CoD4 did superb as a psuedo-realistic modern combat game, even with the multiplayer having a feeling of immersion and atmosphere which, in my opinion, trumps all other Call of Duty games in this broad aspect.

MW2's set pieces were stellar. I found the missions in Russian-invaded D.C. to be very visually and mentally stimulating. MW2 did it's job as a set-piece driven, Action-movie esque arcade game. No need to rag on the story more than it has already been ragged on, but during the infamous "No Russian," my jaw dropped when the bullets started flying. The co-op is good fun, with not much else to say. The multiplayer is... egh.
I've gone back to MW2 Multiplayer in the past couple of days and have had a truly fun time. It has it's many issues, but it still has the potential to be a very compelling game. A frustrating game, but a compelling game. Far from balanced, it still has legs, especially in comparison to Black Ops' lackluster serving.

Heres few reasons:

Overpriced DLCs.

The game itself should cost 30$ bucks.

Activision.

Call of duty Elite.

Releasing the game every year with few tweaks.

It dosn't require skill at all.

Unbalanced.

They're rushing the game.

it's worst than fallout BOS.

The community sucks.

Rarely there's any useage of teamwork.

And it's not because its successful,it's because its overrated.
The weird thing is that all I ever hear is things you've said in your post. I don't understand how people can call it overrated when that's all that ever gets said about it. Portal is overrated, Half-Life 2 is overrated, Call of Duty is underrated if anything.

OT: It does get far more hate than it deserves. I don't mind people disliking it, but there are 3 things that do really annoy me. 1) "I've not played the game, but I hate it." Huh?, 2) People that decide to bring it up how they don't like it without provocation or cause, 3) "I hate it because it's not what I'm into" I would have raged the entire RTS genre out of existence if this was a rational step.

At the end of the day they're pretty good games that bring a lot of revenue into the industry. Some like it, some don't, now can we just stop bringing it up every 30 seconds.

The main problem I have with this franchise is that I simply don't get why people like it.
I mean, it's a gume, so it should be fun, right ?
So, why put it in a realistic setting : why should I want to use a blasted machinegun when there are other games that feature gravity guns, portal guns, or even the DCA cannon from UT ?

Dear omega_peaches, you suggest in your post that people say they dislike this serie to fit in.
Where I'm looking at it, people PLAY IT TO FIT IN. I mean, what's the appeal ?
Ordinary graphics (because yeah, no matter how well you render it, a bleak urban area is still a bleak urban area. fuck it, go play Morrowind if you want good graphics : I do mean graphics, not technology), bland gameplay (I never felt anything while playing it, never felt I was the character), the list goes on and on.

In my opinion, the only reason this franchise has any success is because of all the hype that's built around it.

Oh, and it's a console FPS (for the most part).
That is, for me, the limit. Why would anyone try to do something with suboptimal tools ?
(Unless you're just challenging yourself, but 50 euros seems a bit expensive for that.

The main reason I don't like it is because of the community. From what I've encountered either online or in person, your average CoD fanboy will refer to anything that isn't M rated as childish and a waste, will belittle you for trying anything that isn't a shooter game and/or realistic, and rage when you say there are better games than CoD. This gets worse when the younger fans get involved, especially the ones who pretty much make up a majority of the fanbase now. You know the ones, constantly spamming the mic with vulgar and hate no matter what happens, and they are the same in real life as they are in the game.

Outside of the community, I dislike it because A) they saturate the market and make it so that other games get eclipsed when a new game comes out, B) they are too realistic for my tastes(I play my games to escape reality, not to simulate an experience I can have by joining the military), C) because of the popularity of the series, other developers and publishers see the need to make more shooters to further saturate the market with and slowly drive out the other genres, and D) I don't really like pure shooter games(Halo is the only pure shooter I've enjoyed, otherwise it needs to be a hybrid like Mass Effect).

I've tried the game, I liked CoD2 a good amount and liked CoD4 somewhat, but I haven't liked anything after CoD4.

If you notice there are two types of people who complain about call of duty. Those who complain that it is the exact same everytime and those who complain becuase of how much it has changed since CoD4. Now to me they cant both be right since a game has either changed or it hasnt changed. One of these groups is a bunch of fucking morons who have never played the game before. I shall leave which group that is up to you.
Coming from someone who played CoD 4 for a month and MW2 for a month (and has played the older games), because I couldn't be bothered with continuing, I can tell you this:
The older games had, to some degree, an element of variation. The newer ones, i.e. World at War, MW2, and Black Ops, generally just seem like bug fixes for the previous games, sometimes adding a new gamemode that's fun for about 2 hours (at least in my opinion).
It has changed a lot since CoD4 - meaning it has deteriorated significantly - yet now, it's the same all the time.
Meaning that it has changed a lot since CoD4, becoming the same again and again.
Both groups are, if you look closely at it, one and the same, and in many ways also in the right.

OT: I believe why CoD is hated on so frequently has been stated several times before me.

I do not like actavision, no I do not. they broke WoW & churn out these ridiculous Modern warfare games faster than you can believe, they are all the same, the multi-player is purile, OP perks, expensive DLC, no dedicated servers, etc etc. no. won't be buying. you gotta vote with your wallet in this business & that's how I vote.

If you enjoy the games & have no probs with the cost, I don't see why you shouldn't enjoy them. Have fun!!

I don't have much of a problem with the games. The fans though...the fans need to keep the fuck shut up. The campaign (Irrelevant of how stupid the plot is) is fun, spec-ops in MW2 was also pretty fun. Multiplayer, I can't stand.
