Wrong. One look at this beam causes instant blindless. Putting this beam on the skin will not only burn but possibly give skin cancer. This isn't some basic laser pointer.
Really, mr scientist? How would a concentrated beam of light cause cancer?
The same way anything that burns you has a chance to.
so burns cause cancer now? really? so if I burn my finger on my stove I'll get cancer?

look unless this thing emits large amounts of ionizing radiation its not going to do squat. Blue frequency light is NOT ionizing.
You're right. The sun can burn you but you have no chance of getting cancer from it.

All it has to do is mess with your DNA. Doesn't need ionising radiation, heat can do it. The right chemicals can do it. Age does it. Everything you do increases your risk of cancer. Eating burned toast increases risk of cancer, so does eating crisps. Shining lasers on your skin is probably in the same risk category as crisps - not a problem unless you are an addict - but still.

Just a thought.... solar energy is ~ 1.4kW/m^2 this is shining 1W in ~2mm^2 which makes this laser 500kW/m^2 if my math is correct. I hope to hell I dropped a few 0s.

Well whoop di da it's a laserpointer that's a bit stronger than the others...don't see how this comes close to a lightsaber ...if you can buy a laserpointer with a 3 feet long beam (without any mirror or so on a stick attached to the handle or crap like that)...then i start to get excited ;P

PS: I know the "stick with a mirror" on the handle is stupid but i bet there was someone going to say "well you can attach a mirror or something to it 3 feet from the handle and it won't go any further)

This is a reminder to all the people who are gonna say the forums ninja'd this.

THE MODS DONT GIVE A FUCK

That is all.
It's not so much that, but that people simply need to understand that forum readership is a subsection of our traffic. The percent of people that post on the forums and read the news is pretty high as they are actively participating in the site, but a lot of people come her for any number of reasons and don't post in the forums. They will however read our news.
As long as you make sure that the forum post you found it from gets creditied.

[sup]You do do that, right?[/sup]

Oh, I sensae a disturbance in the force.

Okay, not really, but a laser like that doesn't sit well with me. And while we're on the subject, when when are they gonna mass produce energy weapons like laser guns?
They have had laser cannons mounted on planes. Turns out that if the light goes through a cloud it stops burning through anything. Also it just bounces off reflective surfaces. It's a shitty weapon.
This. It's why we need plasma weaponry. Laser is so passe.

Read this article, I did and have wanted to see it ever since. I can't wait, "missile begone" I SAY!
Tacticle-laser.

For those that don't want to read:
In 2000 and 2001 THEL shot down 28 Katyusha artillery rockets and 5 artillery shells.
On November 4, 2002, THEL shot down an incoming artillery shell. A mobile version completed successful testing. During a test conducted on August 24, 2004 the system successfully shot down multiple mortar rounds. The test represented actual mortar threat scenarios. Targets were intercepted by the THEL testbed and destroyed. Both single mortar rounds and salvo were tested.

Yes. If that was the source or the user submited a tip [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/contact/subject/news], you'll see credit given to the user for providing the tip at the end of the news article. Though that doesn't immediately mean that if you posted before the news article that they found it the forums.

Since this could be as dangerous as a gun, will there now be a laser license? ha.

It's not more dangerous than a tazer.
how so?

the range and accuracy on this thing has to be ridiculous, and it literally burns/can start shit on fire just from pointing it at it/you.

a taser will hurt like a fucking ***** yes but science proves, light is the fastest thing known to ma, and to have that in the hand of hand of a douchebag...
"OMG" the power of the laser decreases at a nutbag rate.
The reason you can see the beam is because the light is hitting particals in the air and Dispersing. to burn something you've got to be less then 10m's away, Maximum.
Yes lasers can be nasty but these are made from projectors! Did you even go to the site?!
UV lasers can cause cancer (UVA that is), pretty much instantaniously infact.
I Know because my brother In law is basically doing a PHD using the things (laser's).
They have also built lasers to blow missles out of the sky (no kidding you can mount then on planes) and they are a $4!TLOAD more powerful.

This is just like buying a gun.
On one side, the perfect self-defense item.
On the other side, a weapon that can cause permanent damage or even death.
Somebody's gonna get hurt.

It makes me think, other than the novelty, what possible purpose would one have for something that starts fires and blinds things where-ever it is pointed?

EDIT: I mean other than a super villain.

Oh dear, we're going to have chav dickheads walking up to people, quickly flashing the laser in their face and then walking off. People are going to have their lives ruined by this product, no matter how safe some rather short sighted individuals seem to think it is.
