Discworld 1 and Diablo 2 on PC is what made interested in game art. Without the amazing style od Discworld and fantastic Cinematics in Diablo, I probably wouldn't become a game artist.

That's the thing with language; jerks can take entirely normal and unladen words and make them sound douche-y as fuck. Blame that guy then, not "avid" as such. It fits the bill for gaming enthusiasts just fine.
The guy wasn't claiming to be an 'avid' gamer, though. It was an entirely different topic.

But regardless, 'serious' doesn't carry any more pretense of 'pretentiousness' than 'avid' does. At least, not to my view. I try not to add my own pretense to certain words and rather choose to view their usage by their literal definition, until the person using the word adds their own context.

So if someone says, "I'm a serious reader", I don't inherently take it as a proclamation of superiority unless the person seems intent on it meaning so.

For me, context is everything, especially in today's world. Without context, things can get muddled, especially when factoring in our own biases. That's why I try to take things at face value until I have a better understanding of the context under which it was stated.

I want to say the Xbox 360 because from memory, Halo 3 was the first game I got on launch day, got it Special Edition too.

Don't get me wrong, there was still some "Take me to GameStop please, Dad?" without an idea of what I even wanted until I got there for some time afterward but I consider the launch of Halo 3 to be the moment the key was turned.

I started playing games on the Apple IIe in the early 80's, so I guess it started there, but Commodore Amiga 500 was the system that really hooked me in to being a dedicated gamer.

Nothing pretentious about enthusiasm. Anyway I think there's more pretense in boasting "seriousness".
Either is a boast, and it all comes down to context and intent.
It does. For example, I'm very serious about my avidity.

Definitely my Atari back in the early 80s.
It's where I got my first games, it's where I learned to code (and now make a living doing. Woo) and it got me extremely interested in computer hardware.

As my ability to get more information increased, so did the rate at which I consumed it. Back in the Atari days, I mostly got dusty old copies of Compute! from the library to read and get more games, but I didn't have access to dedicated gaming magazines until later.

I've been into gaming for a long time, but the system that made me get into the gaming culture further was the Xbox. Mainly because it was the "enemy" console that I despised because I was a total fanboy in the past. Afterwards, I loved games in general and finally transitioned into PC gaming 3 years ago.

By that definition (the first time I had interest in the sausage factory) was with the SNES. More precisely with Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat II. I loved the arcade version, and I was excited with the idea of the SNES version. We all know what happened: Nintendo censored the blood and the most violent parts. Personally I enjoyed the gameplay and had little issues with it. But then I began to read what happened, and kept track of the events. It was interesting to see how the feedback led to Mortal Kombat II being uncensored on the SNES, but with a warning label of not recommended for 17 years old or younger audience (the first time I ever heard of a console game having one)

When I was 12 or 13 the ps2 ape escape 2 was the first game I got for that system. I was so hyped to play it I got a sore stomach just thinking about it
