The cover art for Elder Scrolls: Arena is embarassing.

So many games where I can basically play "Hicks from Aliens" but none where I can play Vasquez. Or a even Ripley!
Hey, now you're saying something I can get behind!

Playing Vasquez wouldn't be a very good game. It'd be too short and you'd know the ending from the start.
What, like Halo: Reach?

In a gunfight, short is good:

PROTIP: Look at the content of the original post before commenting, at the very least look at the title of the thread.

We're talking about Elder Scrolls: Arena here
Dude, PROTIP is so trollthousandten. Expert Tips are now all the rage.
Got a bad day or something and had to take it out on me? There are lots of people who don't post ON TOPIC at all. At least mypost still refers to the boxart of the same series. I probably got a few threads mixed up with eachother, which will explain why I talk about Skyrim, instead of arena. Allow me to present you a supplement, hoping it will satisfy your 'omghewasonlyabitontopic' annoyance.

"Plus it just looks way better then the Arena one. It's easy to see what they were going for.
Back in the days you could do that and still sell far better. Nowadays you even got boxart critics, or hell some parents union moan about the games hurting their childrens souls."
Now if your crusade has come to an end, I believe ther are 234 threads (at least) more for you to correct on human errors. Let's move on with our lives shall we?
Hm, as a matter of fact I did have a bad day, my girlfriend broke up with me, but that's kind of beside the point.

Sorry if that offends you so much, all I did was correct you. Take a chill pill or something...

Oh God, look at this disgusting box art! It's like some pervy girl's sordid dream. Don't boys and young men have enough pressure put on them to conform to aesthetic ideals? This is basically pornography! It's so undermining! They could have had the guy wearing a nice sensible sweater, a cardigan maybe, but noooooo, it had to be pecs out for the girls. What kind of sick female chauvinist do you think drew this pathetic fantasy scene? You can bet it wasn't a man.
Because a topless guy in a fairly bottom covering loincloth, showing off his muscles which honestly only appeals to a few fetishists, and is mostly just to look strong and at the same time mildly savage, is comparable to a woman, up in front, with a slim figure and itty bitty shoulders that could hardly fight a thing, in a g-string, while the men behind are ultra-clothed.

Right... yeah. No, it's not at all the same.

The man is showing off his barbarian muscles. She's showing off her ass.
So you're mad at the art because it depicts a woman who is embracing her sexuality?
This [http://www.comicsalliance.com/2011/09/22/starfire-catwoman-sex-superheroine/] could be an interesting read for you.

No desire to get into the debate again, already said my piece. But it should be noted that not all women who look sexual are embracing their sexuality, some might in fact be the exact opposite.
That's total sexist propaganda! I can't believe you feminists and all these excuses you make to put down writers and artists who are trying to portray women as strong people who have control over their own bodies and lives. It's unacceptable that you would get in the way of one of the best things to happen in fiction to help further sexual equality across the world.

I think you're getting it quite wrong and not seeing the context. Catwoman is sexy, always has been, but she's not a tramp, before the reboot she knew who Batman was in a somewhat relationship with him, now every other page has her half dressed, the cover of her first issue insinuated her dumping the contents of a condom over herself and now she's also having semi-anonymous sex with Batman as she no longer knows his secret identity.

It's not so much lashing out at her sexuality as (rightfully) protesting her, well, sudden change of character into a piece of eye candy, a slut. These women don't want the removal of their sexuality, they want it brought back into balance.

I mean, you can't tell me that all these T&A shots serve any purpose but to try and get a boner out of the male pubescent target audience. We guys can, and should be better than that. It should take more than some cheap fanservice to get us to read a comic. And you can still have a good action comic that appeals to women too, just look at almost anything written by Gail Simone.

You can have sexually confident characters without them constantly being half nude and being in poses that they must have browsed many a Playboy for to find for reference. Just look at well, pre-reboot Catwoman and Poison Ivy. Even Bayonetta is more dignified than this. (And don't get me wrong, I love Bayonetta)

And like Hagi insinuated, not every woman who shows the goods does so because she is embracing her sexuality, it might instead be a desperate attempt to mask insecurity, or a desperate attempt to do anything to get male attention, it doesn't always happen because a woman is happy with herself.

You're a bit late. Complaining about a 17 year old game's cover art seems a bit silly now.
Pretty much this. the market and conditions of consumer psyche were different back then.

You'll have to forgive me if it was sarcasm, but I've seen my share of people playing such opinions straight and meaning every last word of it.

This is not a depiction of real life it's fantasy, the female is a depiction of the common fantasy view of women warriors in a fantasy setting at the time, most of which was heavily influenced by one Boris Vallejo who back then was the king of fantasy art work.

Is it sexual, yep her pose and overall look is designed to be sexy
Does it objectify women, no not really, while she is sexual (skimpy outfit pose etc) she is depicted as someone who can hold her own in a group of warriors she isn't being depicted as being lesser or in a submissive role.

Does it fall under sex sells? Probably

Personally sick of the whole fuss that occurs every time there is a sexually charged female character, for a more recent game look at the stink kicked up by ME2s Miranda and to a lesser extent Samara.
I swear some people won't be totally satisfied until female characters all wear baggy overalls messy hair and hate the idea of sex.

Just thought you Skyrim fans might like to see just how far the franchise has come in terms of cover art.
So, as of seventeen years ago you were cool with

... but the line you draw in the sand and shake your head in shame over is the -box art- for a DOS game.

Right then. Good to see that yes indeed, computer games are still a part of the ever evolving, ever changing world. Thank you Dr. Farnsworth

You and others are far too quick to judge, wrapped up in your prejudices and unable to overcome your lechery, first thing you see is tits and ass then that is all you can see...
But that is exactly what the artist wants you to see. I'm not going to go into the topic of whether this art is sexist or whatever, but looking at the art work from a design point it's clear that its intention is to draw the eye in a specific way.

The woman takes front and center and is bordered by the darker color tones of the characters behind, making her image pop more than anything else on the cover. Given the target audience for the game (young males) it makes sense that the image is something which they find pleasing so that they are more likely to take a closer look. Once they do they will notice the characters in the background, which represent the possible avatars they could play. These three characters are placed in such a way as to suggest an arrow which then lead the eye to the title of the game.
